Read the following passage about large and important cities.

A ‘megacity’ is usually defined as a metropolitan area with a total population in excess of ten million people. A megacity can be a single metropolitan area or two or more metropolitan areas that converge. The terms conurbation, metropolis and metroplex are also applied to the latter. As of 2017, there are 37 megacities in existence. The largest of these are the metropolitan areas of Tokyo and Shanghai, each of these having a population of over 30 million inhabitants, with 38.8 million and 35.5 million respectively. Tokyo is the world's largest metropolitan area, while Shanghai has the world's largest city proper population. The UN predicts there will be 41 megacities by 2030.

By contrast, a ‘global city’, also called ‘world city’ or sometimes ‘alpha city’ or ‘world center’, is a city generally considered to be an important node in the global economic system. The Institute for Urban Strategies at The Mori Memorial Foundation in Tokyo issued a comprehensive study of global cities in 2016. The ranking is based on six overall categories: Economy, Research & Development, Cultural Interaction, Livability, Environment, and Accessibility. According to this particular ranking system, the top three ‘global cities’ at present are London, New York and Tokyo.

📝IELTS examiners stand between you and your required IELTS score. But what are they really thinking, and how can you improve your chances of a good score?

🔗Well, you may be surprised to learn that IELTS examiners are a pretty nice bunch of people. Нere are five special points that an IELTS examiner would like you to know.

✏️1. IELTS examiners want you to get a high score. The most important thing you must know is that the examiner wants you to do well. They don’t sit there listening for mistakes and waiting for you to mess up. The examiner is always looking for ways to raise your score, not lower it.

✏️2. Speaking Part 1 doesn’t really affect your score. In Part 1 of the speaking test the examiner has two objectives: the first is to make you relaxed and the second is to get a quick idea of your ability. The first is important because the examiner wants you to have the best chance of getting a high score. The second is important because the examiner may want to avoid asking you questions that are much too difficult for your ability level. So focus on getting comfortable and try to be as natural as possible. There’s no point getting stressed in Part 1 because the scoring hasn’t even begun yet.

✏️3. Don’t panic when the speaking topic is unfamiliar. One of the main things the examiner is looking for in Speaking Part 3 is this: can the candidate speak about an unfamiliar topic? If your first reaction to an unfamiliar topic is to sweat, stammer, or sit in stunned silence, then that’s a clear sign that you aren’t ready to speak about it.

✏️4. Just keep talking! What really determines your score in IELTS speaking is whether you can speak with fluency, coherence, and good pronunciation, regardless of the topic. It’s NOT about how well you answer the question. The examiner is checking your language skills, not the content of your answer. If the IELTS examiner has to signal for you to stop talking, that is usually a good sign! @mockTashkent

❗️This is probably the most difficult question on the reading paper.

📝COMMON PROBLEMS
The biggest problem here is the ‘not given’ option. Most students are not used to answering questions like this and it causes them lots of problems because they are not sure what to look for. They also spend too much time making sure that it is ‘not given’ and this affects the rest of their test.

📝Students also fail to understand exactly what each statement means and therefore cannot identify if it is true or false. Many focus on keywords instead of understanding what the statement as a whole means.

📝WHAT DO TRUE, FALSE AND NOT GIVEN MEAN?
The most important thing to remember is what the words ‘true’, ‘false’ and ‘not given’ actually mean and therefore what IELTS wants you to write.

• 🔺If the text agrees with or confirms the information in the statement, the answer is TRUE
• 🔺If the text contradicts or is the opposite to the information in the statement, the answer is FALSE
• 🔺If there is no information or it is impossible to know, the answer is NOT GIVEN❗️@mockTashkent

CORRECT ANSWERS:

Please try not to "overthink" these answers.

1. TRUE

"a megacity is defined as... population in excess of 10 million" = refers to population size
"a global city is a city generally considered to be an important node in the global economic system" = economic importance

2. TRUE

37 cities with a population of over 10 million people = As of 2017, there are 37 megacities

Ignore the stuff about 'metropolitan areas'. Don't "overthink"!

3. NOT GIVEN

There's no information about London's population, so we don't know if it's a 'megacity'.
