This ethnographic work examines both the colonial language governmentality imposed by the Turkish state and the Kurdish language activism as a response to this system. Through a genealogical study, it calls for a reconsideration of the linguistic condition in Turkey as being more than nationalist, highlighting its foundation in intertwined ideologies of racism, imperialism, and colonialism. It then provides an analysis of new possibilities and directions led by the actors of the Kurdish language movement, which seeks to enhance not only the linguistic but also the socio-political condition of the Kurdish people by taking a "beyond language" approach. The work advances our thinking about language oppression and minority language activism.

The Kırmanjki (Zazaki) Dialect of Kurdish Language and the Issues It Faces (Chapter 26) - The Cambridge History of the Kurds

What is Code-switching?
Code-switching is the practice of alternating between two or more languages or dialects within a single conversation or even within a single sentence. It's a common linguistic phenomenon, especially in multilingual communities, and it's not simply a random mixing of words; rather, it's a rule-governed and often strategic communicative practice.
Key characteristics of code-switching:
Alternation between distinct language systems: Code-switching involves switching between languages or dialects that are demonstrably different, not simply different styles or registers within the same language.
Intrasentential vs. Intersentential: Code-switching can occur intrasententially (within a single sentence) or intersententially (between sentences). Intrasentential code-switching is often considered more complex linguistically.
Not random: While seemingly spontaneous, code-switching is not random. Speakers follow rules and patterns in their code-switching behavior, though these rules may not always be consciously recognized. The switches are often motivated by social and communicative factors.
Motivated by context: The choice to code-switch is often motivated by the context of the conversation, the speaker's goals, and the relationship between the speakers. Factors influencing code-switching include:
Social context: Formal vs. informal settings
Speaker identity: Expressing identity or solidarity with a specific group
Addressee: Tailoring language to the listener's language proficiency
Topic: Switching languages to better express concepts or ideas associated with a particular language
Emphasis: Using a different language to emphasize certain words or phrases
Examples:
A simple example might be: "I went to the mercado and bought some manzanas." Here, Spanish words ("mercado" and "manzanas") are inserted into an otherwise English sentence.
Types of Code-switching:
There are various ways to categorize code-switching, including based on the grammaticality of the switches and the level of integration between the languages.
Functions of Code-switching:
Code-switching can serve numerous functions, including:
Expressing identity: Signaling affiliation with multiple linguistic and cultural groups.
Facilitating communication: Bridging language gaps between speakers with different language proficiencies.
Creating a sense of solidarity: Building rapport and strengthening social bonds.
Expressing emotions or attitudes: Using a particular language to convey a specific tone or emphasis.
Misconceptions about Code-switching:
Code-switching is often mistakenly perceived as a sign of linguistic incompetence or lack of proficiency. However, it is a sophisticated linguistic skill that demonstrates a high level of language awareness and strategic communication abilities.
In summary, code-switching is a dynamic and complex linguistic phenomenon with important social and communicative functions. It's a powerful tool for expressing identity, bridging communication gaps, and creating social bonds in multilingual contexts.

Ergativity in Kurdish refers to a grammatical alignment system that differs from the more common nominative-accusative system. Here's a breakdown:
Understanding Ergativity:
Nominative-Accusative vs. Ergative-Absolutive:
In a nominative-accusative system (like English), the subject of both transitive and intransitive verbs is treated the same (nominative case), while the object of a transitive verb is treated differently (accusative case).
In an ergative-absolutive system, the subject of an intransitive verb and the object of a transitive verb are treated the same (absolutive case), while the subject of a transitive1 verb is treated differently (ergative case).

Kurdish and Split Ergativity:
Kurdish, particularly Kurmanji, exhibits "split ergativity." This means that ergative patterns appear in certain grammatical contexts, primarily in past transitive clauses.
Essentially, in past transitive sentences, the verb agreement and case marking align with the object rather than the subject.
This means that in those past tense transitive sentences, the "agent" or "doer" of the action, is marked differently than the "patient" or the receiver of the action.
Key Aspects:
Case Marking: The way noun phrases are marked to indicate their grammatical role.
Verb Agreement: How the verb changes form to match the grammatical features of noun phrases.
In simpler terms:
Imagine a sentence like "The boy kicked the ball."
In a nominative-accusative language, "the boy" would be treated the same way as "the boy" in "the boy ran."
In the ergative part of Kurdish, "the boy" in "the boy kicked the ball" would be treated differently from "the boy" in "the boy ran," while "the ball" would be treated the same as "the boy" in "the boy ran."
