The government is keen to improve attractiveness as an investment destination and has undertaken several measures to make it easier to do business in the country.
FYI – this year, New Zealand replaced Singapore as the easiest place for doing business, followed Singapore and Denmark.
TRAI, India’s telecom regulator, may penalize Airtel, Idea and Vodafone to the tune of a massive Rs. 3,050 crores (collectively) for not providing adequate interconnect points to Reliance Jio. TRAI has termed this as ‘anti-consumer behaviour’ which is in violation of mobile licence terms and conditions. TRAI claims that these mobile firms acted with the “ulterior motive to stifle competition“ which resulted in massive depletion in quality of services on Jio's network, causing huge inconvenience to its subscribers who failed to connect calls.

Maharashtra City Taxi Rules, 2016, are coming to the rescue of commuters – these rules will soon put a check on cab aggregators (such as Uber and Ola), which include controlling surge pricing and even cancelling licenses in case of misbehaviour with passengers. There is also a mention for making these cars run on petrol instead of currently used diesel, the cars to have an in-built GPS tracking device constantly connected to the control room, a totally separate colour scheme for such cabs, and drivers to have a public service vehicle badge, amongst several other safety measures.

A new solution is now being developed to battle this – the department of biotechnology (DBT) has developed an innovative way to fortify rice with iron which can be mixed with normal rice and consumed without compromising on its flavour. It provides 50% of recommended daily allowance (RDA) of iron to children when mixed with normal rice in the ratio of 1:100.
So next time you think about rice, instead of only white or brown, consider this one, too!

According to an RBI proposal, a remote ATM, along with a bank employee for support, will soon be treated as an equivalent of a bank branch – to help people further use various features and services that banks offer. As of today, ATMs continue to dominate in terms of number of transactions, much above bank branches, and mobile banking.
FYI - Currently, no person other than a security guard is allowed to be posted at ATMs. This proposal is in response to the request of some banks to post their staff at ATMs so that the kiosks can be well utilized for furthering their business and providing better customer service.

It just got harder for Indians to get employment in the UK. UK is taking several steps to further crackdown on immigration through “work and study routes” from non-European Union nations. This will make it extremely difficult for British firms to hire professionals from countries like India. Some of these measures include tightening the tests companies have to take to hire foreigners to ensure that people migrating there are filling gaps in the labour market and not taking jobs which British locals can do. Also, landlords who will rent out places to migrants having no right to be in UK will be booked for committing a criminal offence!

You don’t need internet to book a cab anymore – thanks to ‘Ola Offline’! The customer has to send his location details to Ola via SMS (through the app itself, the customer will be redirected to the messaging app along with the number) following which the taxi aggregator will share driver details with the customer based on the cab category. The customer will then have to call the driver to fix the ride. To ensure continuous access to mobility, India’s largest cab aggregator has launched this in 4 metro cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai), after testing it successfully in several smaller cities, and will soon be available in all other cities!
