If you have made a large cash deposit in your bank account, be ready to explain it to the Income Tax department. If you show that as business income or agricultural income, there is a high probability that it will be taxed - false claims will be taxed at approximately 85%, unless all paperwork and other surrounding circumstances will be in absolute order!

India has the largest number of political parties in the world - over a massive 1,900, according to the chief election commissioner. However, over 400 of such parties have never contested any election. It is believed that these may be conduits for turning black money into white. The Election Commission has now started an exercise to strike off such parties from its list!

WhatsApp is about to stop working on millions of phones. Older devices are going to have their support cut off and the phone users will no longer be able to use the free chat app. These phones include iPhone 3GS, phones using Windows 7 and any that use Android 2.1 or Android 2.2. The company has advised that anyone who has an older phone should buy a new one before the end of 2016.

According to a Delhi High Court ruling, an adult son has no legal right to stay in his parents' self-acquired property. A person can reside in his parent's house only at their “mercy“. The court has specified that just because parents had allowed the son to live in their house when their relations were cordial did not mean they had to bear his “burden“ throughout his life.

In order to tackle the menace of growing cyber crimes, the central government has decided to set up a mechanism under which people can file a complaint online, eliminating the need to visit a police station entirely. A 'Centre Citizen Portal' is being designed and any complaint pertaining to online pornography, cyber stalking, online financial fraud etc can be registered on the portal. Each complaint shall trigger an alert to the police station SP office or the state level office for police to take action on it. The police department in turn will be able to view and act on it and have the provision to update the complaint status. The citizen will receive the status update alert on his shared mobile number.

Goa is all set to become the first cashless state in India from 31st December, 2016. People will be able to buy even perishables such as vegetables, fish etc. along with other items of daily needs at a press of the button via their mobile phones. While cash transactions will not be banned, this move is encouraged to promote a cashless society.

Those who voluntarily disclose cash now will be able to convert it to "white" by paying a 60℅ penalty, almost double of the 33.9℅ current tax rate. However, those trying to find ways around the demonetization scheme, such as depositing in multiple accounts, buying gold or investing in real estate, will face the full force of law. Phasing out of the outdated ICF designed coaches, which piled up during the Kanpur train accident causing death of 148 passengers, will take a shocking 30 years with the current pace of production of modern Linke Hoffman Busch (LHB) coaches, which are currently servicing elite Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains. Several expert committees had termed the ICF coaches as “safety risk“, inspite of that, the pace of switching over to LHB coaches has been very slow.
FYI - around 44,000 coaches are used in passenger and express trains, of which a massive 40,000 coaches are still of the old ICF design.
For the first time in its 90-year history, Harvard, which only launches programmes and initiatives curated within USA for the world, is rolling out a digital learning initiative unique to India. This initiative aims to impart learning to students at the threshold of starting their careers as also entry-level professionals across the country. The digital initiative will be rolled out free of cost to begin with and to connect with the masses on a large scale. There is a change in the government's strategy to track black money in circulation – it is now expanding the scope of I-T investigations beyond tax evasion and is also roping in the police, the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to look for possible criminality and money laundering. the focus is on greater collaboration between the tax department and other investigating agencies to ensure that those caught with big amounts of unaccounted income are concurrently probed for corruption and criminal activities, including money laundering.

If you want to cut down on your sugar intake, pay close attention to the ingredients – you will have to pay attention to a lot more on the ingredients list than just the word "sugar." Other names for added sugar include agave nectar, brown rice syrup, cane juice, apple juice concentrate, and sorghum syrup. These are replacement words for sugar which various food companies are using so as to trick the consumer to believe that the food package does not contain sugar, when in reality, it actually does!

With 30 years of experience in the manufacturing industry as an accountant, I strongly believe that economic laws need uniformity all over the country so as to protect the interests of consumers and society in general. It cannot be denied that corporate business entities are the largest tax collectors of the union and state governments and therefore largest black money hoarders and ill practitioners. We, the general consumers, should ask the government to reduce personal tax rates than the corporate tax rates under all tax laws. This will circumvent the scope and volume of black money generation by big corporate entities and small scale enterprises will flourish, increasing the employment, distribution of income and wealth of people. Online transactions should be promoted by providing tax relief by government, but only to the individual buyers. It will further curb the concealment of taxes by organized sector and local people will be able to know tax collections from their area and can demand direct allocation. Thus, the economic system will become accountable to the people!

As medicine is not an exact science, the outcome of a treatment cannot be guaranteed. A doctor has to treat according to standard and accepted norms based on medical knowledge existing at the relevant time. The success or the failure of the treatment or its outcome is irrelevant. Hence, an unsuccessful surgery cannot be termed as ‘medical negligence’. The test of negligence is to be determined only on the basis of the qualification of the doctor and procedure adopted for treating the patient, and not on the outcome of the surgery.

The Aadhaar number is all set to become an alternative for all online and card transactions which require password and PIN as the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is developing a mobile app that can be used by shopkeepers, merchants or individuals for receiving payments. The move is part of the drive, anchored by Niti Aayog, to make India a cashless economy, especially after the government scrapped high-value currency notes on November 8.

Following the demonetization drive, banks have slashed deposit rates by over 0.25%. A fall in deposit rates would bring down relative attractiveness of bank fixed deposits and other fixed income instruments. In 2017, equities and equity-related instruments are likely to hog limelight and physical assets such as gold and real estate are going to become less lucrative. Investors are likely to shift some of their savings to the stock market via mutual fund or direct equity route. Some rough projections show household savings towards equity markets could touch a massive USD 100 billion in the times to come from the current USD 25 billion.

The government has clearly stated that authorities can order action against hotels and restaurants that add “service charge“ in the bill without the knowledge and consent of consumers - restaurants doing this fall under “unfair trade practices“. If a restaurant does that, consumers can file complaints in consumer courts.

Providing a window to black money holders, the government has proposed to levy a total tax, penalty and surcharge totalling to 50% on the amount deposited post demonetisation, while higher taxes and stiffer penalty of up to 85% await those who don't disclose but are caught. Further, the declarants will have to deposit 25% of the undisclosed income in an anti-poverty scheme with a 4 year lock in period - without interest.

According to the Bombay High Court, over 80% of Public Interest Litigations (PILs) do not seem to have been filed for genuine reasons. Such PILs seem to have been filed by people who are put up by by some individuals or for the purpose of blackmail. In order to curb this, the courts have been now levying a fine on people who file such frivolous and baseless PILs, which is nothing but an unnecessary burden on the already overburdened Indian Juidiciary.
