I have just finished the first ‘chapter’ and following are the practical things I learned and will definitely try in the future:

Make a ‘to-learn list’
Honestly, I cannot remember the last time I learned something extensively and with dedication. Starting from this month, I’ll make a to-learn list of at least 2-3 every month.

Keep a family-experiences-that-made-me-happy album(with photos preferably)
I believe it is going to be fun to have a physical album with comments and photos.

Some people think we should keep all the money we earn and not pay taxes to the state.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

There is a view that government should abolish taxes and allow citizens to keep all the money they earn. While this suggestion sounds fair on the face of it, it entails several flaws. I therefore believe, the elimination of taxes is not the most sensible course of action.

Advocates of tax abolition are often critical of how the government funds are expended. It is not rare to see governments prioritize matters that do not serve the best interests of the public, and allocate excessive funds for projects of little to no significant impact. Space exploration can be a good case in point. The US government, for example, spent a whopping $250 billion on the moon expedition, with the public almost entirely footing the bill through its taxes. Such seemingly careless allocation of public funds raises question for many people about the necessity of paying taxes to the state.

In my opinion, however, taxes still remain an important element of a democratic and thriving society. It is through the taxes that citizens pay that government can perform civil operations. These services include but not limited to infrastructure development, education, healthcare, defense, and social welfare. If people were not obliged to pay taxes, this would be a major burden on government’s resources, preventing it from carrying out its responsibilities and providing essential services to the public.

An argument could be made that governments’ revenue streams are not limited to taxation and they can cover the funds for public services without relying on the tax-payer money. While this is true, these resources are not infinite and could be depleted as the population grows. If governments face constant revenue shortfalls due to tax evasion, they may resort to borrowing to meet their financial obligations. This can contribute to an increase in national debt over time.

In conclusion, it is true occasional misallocation of the tax-payer money can occur but to me this is not strong enough grounding to abolish taxes. Taxes help governments run the country, contributing to its overall functioning and maintenance.

The two maps illustrate the significant changes made to Liverton Docks between 1980 and the present day. Overall, the area has undergone a transformation from an industrial shipping dock into a modern, mixed-use recreational and residential area, with the introduction of several residential facilities including, an education center, hotel, apartments, and a river walk.

In 1980, Liverton Docks was an active industrial area. The river ran through the middle with both the northern and southern banks of the river featuring warehouses and cranes. Specifically, two large warehouses were located along the north bank, each accompanied by a crane, while the south bank had one crane and one warehouse.

Since then, the area has improved significantly. All the warehouses and cranes have been removed. On the north side of the river, the space has been replaced with an education centre, a sailing club, and a kid’s playground, with a flood barrier installed at the eastern end of the river The river itself now contains a ship museum, indicating a shift from commercial to cultural use.

On the south side of the river, the former warehouse and crane area has been redeveloped into a hotel, apartments, and a parking area, all connected by a river walk for pedestrians. Additionally, a bridge has been constructed over the river near the flood barrier, allowing access between the two sides.

The best way to make roads safer is to make vehicle drivers take a driving test each year.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

An unprecedented rise in car ownership has coincided with a significant increase in road accidents. This troubling trend has compelled the relevant authorities to seek effective measures to ensure road safety, with annual tests for drivers seen as the best approach to achieve this. I fully support this approach for two main reasons.

First and foremost, this method would ensure that drivers regularly update their skills, encouraging them to follow traffic rules more diligently. Updating drivers’ skills is particularly important today due to the sudden increase in the number of cars in recent years, as operating a vehicle now demands greater skill and awareness than in the past. Regular courses should focus on skills such as driving in tight spaces, maintaining a safe distance on congested roads, and adhering to speed limits in public areas.

Beyond improving drivers’ practical skills, regular assessments can help drivers stay informed about changes in traffic laws and road systems, which are often overlooked once a license is obtained. Traffic regulations and road infrastructure evolve over time, especially with the introduction of new technologies such as electric vehicle lanes, smart traffic signals, and updated speed regulations. Without periodic education or testing, many drivers remain unaware of these changes, putting themselves and others at risk. Incorporating these updates into annual tests would ensure that all drivers remain current and capable of navigating the modern driving environment safely.

In conclusion, annual tests for drivers are one of the most effective ways to ensure road safety, as they help drivers regularly update both their driving skills and their knowledge of evolving traffic laws and infrastructure.

Some people think most crimes are the result of circumstance, for example, poverty and other social problems. Others believe that most crimes are caused by people who are bad by nature.

Dicuss both views and give your own opinion.

Despite the strides made in the field of human psychology, there seems to be little consensus over what contributes to criminal behavior. While some attribute it to external factors such as financial instability and problems in society, others argue that certain individuals may have inherent inclinations towards engaging in criminal behavior. I believe that most crimes are primarily influenced by circumstantial factors.

Proponents of the idea of an innate criminal mind think personality traits contribute to a person’s susceptibility to criminal actions. Some people exhibit characteristics such as impulsivity, sensation-seeking, or a lack of empathy, all of which can increase the likelihood of engaging in unlawful activities. Apart from this, genetic factors are also considered to be at play, though the field is still in its infancy and therefore, lacks definitive proof or direct causal links.

I would argue that most crimes stem from poverty and other societal problems. Economic deprivation, lack of access to resources, and limited opportunities can lead individuals to commit crimes as a means of survival or to address their financial needs. For example, when a person from a low-income neighborhood, struggling to make ends meet due to unemployment, inadequate education, and limited job prospects resorts to crime, putting it down to the person’s bad nature appears simplistic.

Existing social problems are also behind many criminal activities. Neighborhood instability and social disorganization can create an environment that fosters criminal behavior. More often than not, communities facing these challenges experience breakdowns in social bonds, reduced effectiveness in working together, and increased crime rates. Again, blaming internal factors like genetics for crimes committed in disadvantaged neighborhoods seems inadequate as an explanation.

In conclusion, poverty and other problems we have in society cannot explain every instance of criminal behavior and some internal factors do play a role in a person’s criminal acts. However, the vast majority of crimes are rooted in financial disadvantage and community challenges. These factors drive individuals to engage in criminal behavior for survival or due to limited alternatives.

Cyclists and car drivers sharing the same road might cause some problems.
What are the problems?
What could be done to solve those problems?

In many countries, due to inadequate road infrastructure, drivers and cyclists have to use the same road. This naturally leads to several challenges and problems, some of which include safety concerns and increased levels of traffic congestions. However, developing dedicated bike lanes can mitigate those problems.

The coexistence of different modes of transportation on the same road increases the risks of accidents and collisions. One primary concern stems from the speed differences between motorized vehicles and cyclists. The former usually operates at a higher speed and this speed discrepancy can create hazardous situations when sharing the road with cyclists. This challenge can be exacerbated by road users failing to adapt to these varying speeds, leading to collisions particularly at intersections and during overtaking maneuvers.

The speed difference may even contribute to traffic congestions. Naturally, when there is a stark difference in speeds, this can hinder the smooth flow of traffic, leading to bottlenecks or slower overall travel. This is especially worse during peak hours, when the volume of traffic is large.

These challenges, however, can be somewhat overcome once dedicated bike lanes are facilitated. The segregation can significantly reduce the chances of accidents and collisions as cyclists can travel without the constant concern of sharing the road with high speed vehicles. The separation of bike lanes from motorized traffic can also improve the predictability for both cyclists and drivers, making it easier to carry out maneuvers. This can lead to a safer environment.

Apart from this, the introduction of bike lanes contributes to a smoother flow of traffic. When there is a designated space for cyclists, the potential conflicts and disruptions caused by the speed difference are minimized. This can help alleviate congestion, particularly during peak hours as each mode of transportation can operate independently.

In conclusion, drivers and cyclists sharing the same road poses a number of challenges, including higher risks of accidents and heightened traffic congestions. The most feasible solution to these problems would be to allocate exclusive cycling lanes.
