I saw in Ozodbek’s channel people arguing that reading fiction is a waste of time.(I might have misunderstood that) but here’s my take on this:
Well, first off, you never know until you try. I used to think reading fiction(reading in general) was a waste of time cuz you can learn what the book can teach from other sources(youtube videos for example) but recently I started reading books(rather devouring them). Here’s a couple of things I noticed:
1) I now have a stronger/more intense inner monologue/dialogue. I observe things from slightly more different perspectives due to this stronger/more intense inner dialogue. And note that NOT everyone has this inner dialogue. And reading fiction specifically is linked to cultivating this inner monologue.
2) it is a mental activity. Last time I read ‘the Picture of Dorian Gray’ I read it in different ‘fonts’. When you read things you know you see the mental pictures of the events. Well, I tried to imagine the events in different styles of pictures. First I imagined things in the style of a regular film with a kind of gray-ish background. And then I used the 2000s disney style(like the one in the Old Hercules cartoon). It compelled my brain to engage more.
3) I now speak better in my native language. In the past(like 5-6 months ago) i used to find it hard to speak purely in uzbek. But I do it rather effortlessly now.
4) I have more vivid dreams. Another change I noticed is the fact that my REM-sleep experience is much much better, which is in and of itself indicative of better cognitive functioning.
So, should everyone read fiction? Abso-freaking-lutely. And reading 2-3 novels is not really reading fiction. It’s like going to the gym for a week and conclude that gym is useless)
I spend around 5-6 hours reading one book(300 pages)
I spend 45 minutes in the gym(3-4 times a week)
If you break it down to days, that’s around 90 minutes to read just one book and go to the gym.
Saying you don’t have time is just an excuse and straight-up lying to yourself:)
