The monetary base in Japan was up 11.2 percent on year in December, the Bank of Japan said on Friday - coming in at 474.126 billion yen.
That follows the 13.2 percent annual jump in November.
Banknotes in circulation gained 4.4 percent on year, while coins in circulation advanced an annual 1.1 percent.
Current account balances jumped 13.5 percent, including an 11.7 percent spike in reserve balances.
The adjusted monetary base gained 4.4 percent on year to 478.039 billion yen.
The monetary base was up 12.9 percent on year in the fourth quarter; for all of 2017, it was up 17.0 percent.

BRAZIL: Steelmakers And Rising Risk Appetite Lead Ibovespa To A New Record

Investors' good mood and an increased risk appetite abroad boosted the Ibovespa, which rose for the ninth consecutive trading session on Thursday, gaining 0.84% to 78,647.42 points - a new settlement record. The upward move in steelmaker shares also helped the index to end higher.
During the trading session, the Ibovespa surpassed 79,000 points, reaching 79,134.69 points, but returned part of those gains late in the afternoon amid light profit-taking.
"The turnover is good, and money is coming into Brazil, not only in the stock market, and some steelmakers papers are helping," said Jos? Costa, an economist at Codepe Corretora.
Usiminas shares (+5.65%) had the best performance amid Ibovespa's constituents, followed by Gerdau (+5.64%), Gerdau Metal?rgica (+3.65%) and CSN (+3.11% ). All of those companies are steelmakers.
On Wednesday, CSN raised the steel price by up to 23% for automakers and other industrial consumers, a move that should be followed by other steel sectors companies.
The U.S. stock markets also remained positive and broke records, amid better economic indicators.
"The favorable outlook for risky assets and the better outlook for the Brazilian economy overlaps negative news and uncertainties with the country's fiscal situation," wrote Guide Investimentos analyst Rafael Passos in a report.
The locally traded U.S. dollar closed down for the third consecutive session against the Brazilian real, tracking the good mood of the external scenario, more favorable for risky assets, and the improvement in the outlook for the Brazilian economy. As a result, the currency fell 0.06%, quoted at R$ 3,235.
For the next few days, however, analysts expect a profit-taking in the local market.
"There is a lot of euphoria, and we are already in the ninth trading session higher. The market starts to exaggerate a bit," warned Costa.

COLOMBIA: Colcap Rises 0.80%, Boosted By Ecopetrol Shares

Colcap, the main index of the Colombian Stock Exchange, rose 0.80% near the end of the Thursday's session to 1,527.83 points, boosted by Ecopetrol's shares. The company's stocks rose for the third consecutive trading day.

The locally traded U.S. dollar closed at 2,887.00 Colombian pesos, marking a 0.55% fall, due to a sustained spike in oil prices abroad. Wilson Tovar, an analyst at Acciones & Valores, said that the rally in commodity prices continues, while oil remains close to US$ 62 per barrel, near the 2015 peak (US$ 62.58). Tovar pointed out that the better perspectives on the Chinese economy have allowed the prices of these assets to increase.

Australia will on Friday release November trade data, highlighting a modest day for Asia-Pacific economic activity. The trade balance is expected to show a surplus of A$550 million, up from A$105 million in October.
Japan will see December number for monetary base, as well as for the services and composite indexes from Nikkei.
In November, the monetary base climbed 13.2 percent on year, while the services PMI had a score of 51.2 and the composite came in at 52.2.
Malaysia will provide November numbers for imports, exports and trade balance. In October, imports were worth 71.9 billion ringgit and exports were at 82.4 billion ringgit for a trade surplus of 10.6 billion ringgit.
South Korea will release November data for current account; in October, the current account surplus was $5.01 billion.

COLOMBIA: Social Organizations Ask Govt And ELN To Extend Ceasefire

One-hundred-seventy people from different political groups signed a public letter addressed to the Colombian government and the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla group urging both sides to extend the current bilateral ceasefire to allow the peace process to move ahead.
The signatories said that "we are convinced that the negotiated outcome of the armed conflict is a priority. We recognize the efforts of the Quito roundtable parties, and we echo the communities that have benefited directly from the bilateral ceasefire," wrote dozens of academics, peace activists, business people and social leaders from different regions of the country.
"We believe that, in spite of some incidents which should be investigated effectively, the ceasefire that expires next Tuesday provides a better context for the participation of society in the construction of peace," the signatories added.
A new cycle of the peace talks are expected to begin on January 9 in neighboring Ecuador, but there is still no guarantees on the ceasefire extension. Although the ELN said that the bilateral ceasefire is "at risk," the new Colombian chief negotiator, Gustavo Bell, said he expects the ceasefire could be extended.

Dollar Mixed Ahead Of December Jobs Report

The dollar is turning in a mixed performance against its major rivals Thursday afternoon. The buck is gaining ground against its major European rivals, but is down slightly against the Japanese Yen.
Employment data was mixed this morning, with private sector employment growth topping expectations, while weekly jobless claims unexpectedly increased. Traders are looking forward to the release of the all important jobs report tomorrow morning.
A report released by payroll processor ADP on Thursday showed private sector employment in the U.S. jumped by much more than expected in the month of December. ADP said employment in the private sector surged up by 250,000 jobs in December after climbing by a downwardly revised 185,000 jobs in November.
Economists had expected an increase of about 190,000 jobs, matching the job growth originally reported for the previous month.
With the release of the closely watched monthly jobs report looming, the Labor Department released a report on Thursday showing an unexpected uptick in first-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits in the week ended December 30th.
The report said initial jobless claims edged up to 250,000, an increase of 3,000 from the previous week's revised level of 247,000. Economists had expected jobless claims to drop to 240,000 from the 245,000 originally reported for the previous week.
The dollar has dropped to around $1.2070 against the Euro Thursday afternoon, from an early high of $1.2003.
Eurozone private sector expanded the most since early 2011 driven by a near-record expansion of manufacturing and the steepest rise in service sector for over six-and-a-half years.
The composite output index rose to 58.1 in December from 57.5 in November, final data from IHS Markit showed Thursday. This was the highest score since February 2011. The score was slightly above the flash estimate of 58.0.
The buck has fallen to around $1.3550 against the pound sterling Thursday afternoon, from a high of $1.3504 this morning.
British service sector growth accelerated at a faster-than-expected pace in December, survey data from IHS Markit showed Thursday. The IHS Markit/Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply Purchasing Managers' Index, rose to 54.2 in December from 53.8 in November. Economists had expected the index to rise to 54.0.
The UK mortgage approvals rose unexpectedly in November, data from the Bank of England revealed Thursday. The number of mortgages approved for house purchases totaled 65,139 in November compared to 64,887 in October. Approvals were forecast to fall to 64,000.
UK house prices increased at a slightly faster pace at the end of 2017, data from Nationwide Building Society showed Thursday. House prices grew 2.6 percent year-on-year in December, slightly faster than the 2.5 percent rise seen in November. The annual rate was expected to ease to 2 percent.
The greenback has risen to around Y112.775 against the Japanese Yen this afternoon, from an early low of Y112.484.
The manufacturing sector in Japan continued to expand in December, and at an accelerated pace, the latest survey from Nikkei showed on Thursday with a manufacturing PMI score of 54.0. That's up from 53.6 in November, and it moves further above the boom-or-bust line of 50 that separates expansion from contraction.

South Korea posted a current account surplus of $7.43 billion in November, the Bank of Korea said on Friday - up from 5.72 billion in October.
The goods account surplus widened to $11.46 billion compared to the $9.69 billion surplus for November of 2016.
The services account deficit increased to $3.27 billion from $1.81 billion in November 2016, owing to deterioration in the travel account.
The primary income account reversed from its $0.37 billion surplus in November of last year to a deficit of $0.07 billion this year, in line with an increase in the payments on equity account.
The secondary income account showed a $0.70 billion deficit.
In the financial account, there was an overall $10.44 billion increase in net assets in November.
Direct investment assets grew by $2.78 billion, and direct investment liabilities by $2.85 billion.
There was a $4.83 billion expansion in portfolio investment assets during the month, and a $2.73 billion increase in portfolio investment liabilities.
Financial derivatives posted a net contraction of $0.88 billion.
In terms of other investment, there was an increase in assets of $8.44 billion, and an increase in liabilities of $0.53 billion.
Reserve assets expanded by $1.37 billion.

VENEZUELA: Government Moves Ahead With Country's Cryptocurrency

The Venezuelan government is moving ahead with the implementation of its cryptocurrency, named Petro, developing the technological platform, said the Vice President for the Economic Area, Wilmar Castro Soteldo.
Petro should be the first cryptocurrency backed by reserves of oil, gas, gold, diamonds and other natural minerals.
"There are already many months of debate, studies to work properly," he said, according to the Venezuelan state news agency. Soteldo stressed that Petro must "encourage other countries, which, like Venezuela, have been the victims of the siege of the world's major financial centers, and could have a reference in this experience."
The expectation of the government of Nicol?s Maduro with the cryptocurrency's implementation is to recover and boost the country's economy in 2018.
The new currency was announced at the beginning of December by the president. He stated then that "it will help to overcome the financial blockade and thus move towards new forms of international financing for the economic and social development of the country."

Colombia's Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 3.28% in December 2017 on an annual basis, accelerating to the fastest pace since November 2016, after increasing 1.39% in the previous month, said the country's statistics office.
In the twelve months through December, the mining sector was the only one to record an above-average price rise of 13.84%. Industry (+1.37%) and agriculture and livestock and fisheries (+0.86%) posted lower inflation.
On a monthly basis, the Colombian PPI increased 0.48%, decelerating from November when it increased 1.58%.

Treasuries Recover From Early Move To The Downside

After initially coming under pressure, treasuries staged a recovery over the course of the trading session on Thursday.
Bond prices climbed well off their worst levels of the day before closing roughly flat. Subsequently, the yield on the benchmark ten-year note, which moves opposite of its price, inched up by less than a basis point to 2.453 percent after reaching a high of 2.487 percent.
The initial weakness among treasuries came following the release of report from payroll processor ADP showing private sector employment jumped by much more than expected in the month of December.

Economists had expected an increase of about 190,000 jobs, matching the job growth originally reported for the previous month.
Paul Ashworth, Chief U.S. Economist at Capital Economics, said the stronger than expected job growth in the ADP report was probably skewed upwards by the recent strength of the Labor Department's non-farm payrolls figures, which are used as one of the inputs
"Nevertheless, after the earlier disruption caused by the hurricanes, the labor market clearly ended 2017 with some considerable momentum," Ashworth said.
A separate report from the Labor Department showed initial jobless claims unexpectedly inched higher in the week ended December 30th.
The report said initial jobless claims edged up to 250,000, an increase of 3,000 from the previous week's revised level of 247,000.
The increase surprised economists, who had expected jobless claims to drop to 240,000 from the 245,000 originally reported for the previous week.
"We wouldn't read too much into that increase, however," Ashworth said. "Claims are notoriously volatile at the best of times and particularly around holidays."
"The bottom line is that claims remain at an unusually low level, providing more evidence of labor market strength," he added.
Traders picked up treasuries at reduced levels following the early decline as they looked ahead to the release of the Labor Department's more closely watched monthly employment report on Friday.
The report is expected to show an increase of about 190,000 jobs in December following the jump of 228,000 jobs in November. The unemployment rate is expected to hold at 4.1 percent.
The jobs data is likely to overshadow separate reports on international trade, service sector activity, and factory orders.

Crude Oil Smashes Through $62 After EIA Report

Crude oil futures rose further Thursday as the government confirmed another significant drop in U.S. oil inventories.
Feb. WTI oil climbed 38 cents, or 0.6%, to settle at $62.01/bbl on Nymex, the highest in more than three years.
U.S. commercial crude oil inventories decreased by 7.4 million barrels from the previous week, the EIA said today. That result is roughly in line with yesterday's industry survey by the American Petroleum Institute.
Stockpiles have been dwindling for weeks now, fueling speculation the global oil market can re-balance in 2018.
At 424.5 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are in the middle of the average range for this time of year.
However, with a cold snap keeping drivers off the roads during the holidays, total motor gasoline inventories increased by 4.8 million barrels last week, and are above the upper half of the average range.
There was little reaction to news that U.S. President Donald Trump proposed a major expansion in U.S. offshore drilling.

Согласно данным Госдепартамента Соединенных Штатов, показатель приема беженцев в США при президентстве Дональда Трампа был зафиксирован на самом низком за последние 15 лет значении. Со дня вступления на пост президента США до конца 2017 года администрация Белого дома приняла всего 29022 беженца. Столь небольшое число желающих получить в Америке убежище было зафиксировано только в 2002 году, после проведения терактов 11 сентября 2001 года.
К примеру, во время правления президентов Джорджа Буша-младшего и Барака Обамы среднее число легальных мигрантов, попавших на территорию Соединенных Штатов, составляло 70-80 тыс. человек в год.
Нынешнее существенное сокращение числа беженцев вполне объяснимо – ужесточение иммиграционной политики в стране являлось одним из основных обещаний Дональда Трампа во время его предвыборной кампании. Президент опасался, что мягкие условия иммиграционной системы могут способствовать проникновению террористов. В итоге, в октябре прошлого года Трамп подписал указ, ограничивающий количество беженцев в 2018 году 45 тысячами человек. Также этот указ налагает запрет на въезд в США граждан некоторых мусульманских стран.
Подобное решение нового президента США вызвало волну критики и протестов по всему миру.

В четверг курс биткоина снижается, чему способствуют новости из Китая касательно ограничения майнинга криптовалюты в стране.По данным портала Coindesk, который учитывает среднюю стоимость биткоина на четырех крупнейших мировых криптобиржах – Bitfinex, Bitstamp, Coinbase и itBit, криптовалюта номер один оценивалась в 14,58 тысячи долларов, потеряв 3,63%. Показатель был зафиксирован в 13:14 мск. Между тем, по версии портала CoinMarketCap, учитывающего данные более 20 криптобирж, биткоин подешевел на 1,49% в указанное время, опустившись до 14,88 тысячи долларов.Другие крупные альткоины демонстрировали разнонаправленную динамику. Согласно CoinMarketCap, Ethereum вырос на 8,09%, до 954,55 доллара, Bitcoin Cash подешевел на 13,63%, до 2,4 тысячи долларов, криптовалюта Ripple продолжила восходящую динамику, набрав 27,47% и расположившись на отметке в 3,47 доллара.На текущий момент капитализация рынка криптовалют достигает 741,064 миллиарда долларов. Доля биткоина составляет около 36% всего рынка цифровых валют, Ripple – 16%, Ethereum – 12%.Накануне стало известно, что Банк Китая дал поручение Национальной ассоциации интернет-финансов страны (NIFA) выйти с просьбой к властям ряда регионов страны урегулировать объемы добычи биткоина. Такой шаг финансовые чиновники Поднебесной объясняют необходимостью экономии электроэнергии.
