VfB Stuttgart v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images Bayern Munich dropped a 3-1 decision to VfB Stuttgart. Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer could only watch as things unraveled around him during the team’s 3-1 loss to VfB Stuttgart. While the result was meaningless in the grand scheme of things, Neuer knows that the squad must have a short memory and push forward to next week’s Champions League tilt with Real Madrid. “We never like to accept defeats, of course we would have liked a different result. If we converted one of our chances and made it 2-1, we’d have left the pitch as winners. We know that a really big game awaits us on Wednesday,” Neuer said (as captured by via @iMiaSanMia). “We were dangerous today on counterattacking situations and that will also be the case against Real Madrid if we create situations like that. We have to have a little more killer instinct. But it will be another final at the Bernabéu.”Neuer and his mates will have their work cut out for them as they seek to enter Spain and knock off Los Blancos. The loss to Stuttgart will not help things in that respect, but Bayern Munich also knows it still has much left to play for. Let’s just get to it, here are some quick hitters on the match: As always, let’s start with a look at Thomas Tuchel’s makeshift lineup:

LET’S GO BOYS! <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/VfBFCB?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#VfBFCB</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/PACKMAS?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#PACKMAS</a> <a href="https://t.co/MKuUXTTA2Q">pic.twitter.com/MKuUXTTA2Q</a>— FC Bayern US (@FCBayernUS) <a href="https://twitter.com/FCBayernUS/status/1786732802920096103?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 4, 2024</a>Tuchel’s XI was a good one based on talent, but his options were limited due to injuries and risk management. The manager could ill-afford to play too many projected starters for the <a href="https://www.managingmadrid.com">Real Madrid</a> match, but he did have to use a few. There is no real reason to criticize anything as we all knew it would be cobbled together.Rumored Bayern Munich transfer target Chris Führich ripped off a nice attempt early in the match, but Manuel Neuer handled it. Führich was very good on the day and probably did himself a favor with this performance. The string of no luck regarding injuries continued. Raphaël Guerreiro picked up a knock to what looked like his ankle and was replaced by Leon Goretzka in the 17th minute. Just prior to Guerreiro officially leaving the match, Eric Dier was busted open from a head collision early in the match. Put all of these guys in bubble wrap!Later, Dier saved a goal by heading a rocket of a shot to prevent it from scoring, which left his face bloodied again. Seconds after Dier went into full “Warrior Mode”, his teammates thanked him by giving up a soft goal (great finish, though) from Leonidas Stergiou who beat Alphonso Davies. Davies’ lackluster run of play continued. The Canadian just cannot get beat by Stergiou there, but the Swiss player just put together a really nice run and finish. I don’t care what else Dier has done in his career or where he played, this dude has been a beast since arriving in Bavaria. The Englishman has made the team better, more stable, and tougher. In the 37th minute, Bayern Munich was awarded a penalty kick when Serge Gnabry was hauled down in the box. Harry Kane buried it to knot the game at 1-1. Tuchel took no chances after halftime by bringing in Dayot Upamecano for Dier. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting should have put Bayern Munich up in the 48th minute, but he missed wide. Davies just continues to look lost and unfocused. His fall has been drastic this season. Davies’ negative impact on the match was not limited to one goal or a few bad decisions. When former Bayern Munich campus prospect Woo-yeong Jeong entered the match, he promptly beat Davies for an improbable header goal (after a nice cross from Silas). In all Davies, only completed 74% of his passes and lost the ball an astonishing 15 times out of 48. In extra time, a complete and utter breakdown on the backline (led by Dayot Upamecano...again), led to Silas making it 3-1. As they say, it was time to start the buses. Overall, the loss was a bitter pill to swallow because you just do not want to lose any momentum at this point. More disappointing than the loss, though, were the individual performances. Davies…

VfB Stuttgart v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Daniel Kopatsch/Getty Images Another one of those “burn the tape” games. It has been a Bundesliga season to forget for Bayern Munich fans, with the misery compounding Saturday in the Bavarians’ 3-1 capitulation to VfB Stuttgart.Like his head coach Thomas Tuchel, Bayern’s top sporting executive Max Eberl tried to take the approach of turning the page quickly — preferring to look ahead to Wednesday’s semifinal second leg in the Champions League.“Stuttgart went into the game with energy and deservedly took the lead,” Eberl said after the game (via FCBayern.com, as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We were a bit lucky to get an equalizer, but then we had to take the lead with two or three great chances after half-time. I believe we’d have won the game. It’s annoying that we lost. That’s never what we want. “But on Wednesday we have a big game against Real Madrid. Today gets forgotten relatively quickly and then all the focus goes to Wednesday. We also showed against [Arsenal FC] that we can switch on very quickly. No matter what, no matter how, we want to reach the Final.”Bayern has indeed risen to the occasion against top competition in the UCL. But it will have to shake off this result against Stuttgart — a strong Bundesliga foe who thoroughly outclassed on the day — to have a fighting chance.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s disappointing 3-1 loss to VfB Stuttgart? VfB Stuttgart v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Alex Grimm/Getty Images What a day. Another loss in the books for the Bavarians. Second place confirmed? Not just yet. Bayern Munich fell once again in the Bundesliga this season, this time in a comprehensive 3-1 defeat on the road at VfB Stuttgart. From a Bayern perspective, the result matters little for this season. For the next, however, it is a reminder that not only Bayer Leverkusen who will challenge for Bundesliga dominance. The emphatic display — Bayern was outshot over 2-to-1, and 3-1 for shots on target, while conceding 61% possession — was a showcase for Stuttgart’s impressive talent this season. From head coach Sebastian Hoeneß — maybe a Bayern candidate in the future? — to Germany national team attackers Chris Führich and Deniz Undav, the Swabians look well set up to compete again. But enough about the players and coaches the Bavarians don’t have. How about the ones they do? And how did they do? Here is how Bild weighed in — have your say below the jump.Stuttgart 3:1 Bayern | Player ratings [@BILDamSONNTAG] pic.twitter.com/JscNTEc7uX— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) May 4, 2024Vote! VfB Stuttgart v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images Forgive and forget and move on to the season-defining match in the Bernabeu. It was a frustrating night for Bayern Munich, losing to VfB Stuttgart in Stuttgart for the first time in over a decade and allowing Die Schwäben to move within two points of the Bavarian giants in the race to finish second.“The defeat was totally avoidable,” Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel said after the loss in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “We actually had chances in the second half and then we were inattentive shortly before the end. Honestly, this is a game we’ll have to get over as quickly as possible. That is already forgotten today. The next four days matter.”But will it be different to today’s limp performance against Stuttgart? If things went so badly today, can they be good enough to win against the 14-time-European champions Real Madrid? “Yes, 100%. After all the post-match interviews today, I won’t waste another minute on this game.”No words in the world would have been enough to inspire confidence in this scenario and Tuchel knows it. But, simultaneously, he can point to the 3-2 capitulation against Heidenheim, the negativity and doubts that followed such a loss and the subsequent battle and grit Bayern showed against Arsenal in the Londoners’ home that few had expected. If anyone can bounce back from a disappointing loss to a positive Champions League night, it will be Tuchel. Having pulled off this trick once, it will be up to Tuchel to do it again in the Santiago Bernabeu. No pressure.Looking for more discussion on the game? Check our our postgame podcast! In a late season matchup between two of the top three Bundesliga teams, <a href="https://www.bavarianfootballworks.com">Bayern Munich</a> lost 3-1 at Stuttgart. The defeat ended Bayern’s undefeated streak of six games. For Stuttgart, the result snapped a nine-game winless streak against Bayern, as well as 13 consecutive home losses to Bayern. In reality, this was a throwaway game for Bayern and a building block for Stuttgart. Bayern leads Stuttgart by two points with two matches remaining, but both teams have already secured their <a href="https://www.sbnation.com/champions-league">Champions League</a> slots for next season.Stuttgart dominated possession in the first half and took the lead in the 29th minute on a goal from Leonidas Stergiou. Eight minutes later, Harry Kane converted a controversial penalty earned by Serge Gnabry. Former Bayern product Jeong Woo-Yeong scored the game winner with a near post header in the 83rd minute. Silas Katompa Mvumpa sealed the win with a cool finish in stoppage time. How much of Bayern’s future was on display today?<a href="http://www.sbnation.com/transfer-rumors">Transfer rumors</a> are a daily aspect of life at Bayern, but it doesn’t take an insider to realize major change is coming this summer. A number of key players only have a year remaining on their contracts, including Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller, Joshua Kimmich, Eric Dier, Leroy Sane, and Alphonso Davies. But there were a few interesting pieces on the opposing side of the pitch:Alexander Nübel is the heir apparent at goalkeeper. He wasn’t tested much today but his demeanor reflects the experience he’s earned in the past three seasons on loan at Monaco and Stuttgart.Sebastian Hoeness signed an extension in March that will keep him at Stuttgart until 2027. But given his success and connections to Bayern, he will always be considered as a viable candidate for the head coaching gig.Serhou Guirassy is a bigger wildcard. The striker’s contract runs for another two years but includes a laughable release clause of £17.5M. After rejecting an extension in December and scoring 25 goals this season, Guirassy will be a priority target for top clubs across Europe.Thomas Tuchel rested some players, but not nearly enoughJamal Musiala and Matthijs de Ligt are nursing injuries and doing everything they can to recover and perform at a peak level in the upcoming second leg of the Champions League semifinal at <a href="https://www.managingmadrid.com">Real Madrid</a>.Instead of benching other key contributors, Tuchel opted to provide playing time and the injury bug crashed the party. Raphaël Guerreiro laid out his entire body to block a shot and ended up limping off the pitch in the 17th minute. Eric Dier’s forehead was a magnet after he collided with Guirassy and then denied Guirassy in the 28th minute with a goal line clearance. Mathys Tel subbed off in the 72nd minute after an awkward twist of the ankle.Hopefully these are slight knocks that can be cured with a few stitches and ice packs over the next four days.Alphonso Davies has a major case of the “Yips”On a day where Davies set the Bundesliga season record with a sprint at 36.41 km/h (22.62 mph), the Canadian’s struggles on the pitch continued. Davies lost possession on a third of his touches and was the lowest rated player on the pitch. The movement that created Stuttgart’s goal in the first half left Davies looking helpless. Woo-Yeong slipped behind Davies in the 83rd minute to score the game winner.Playing time is crucial to rebuilding a young player’s confidence. Given the numerous injuries to Bayern’s wingers, along with the impressive form that Noussair Mazraoui has shown at left back over the past month, perhaps it would be wiser for Davies to spend the final two…

VfB Stuttgart v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images The defender/midfielder required a first-half substitution against VfB Stuttgart. Just when Bayern Munich was getting into rhythm, the injury bug strikes again.Raphaël Guerreiro, starting in central midfield in Saturday’s Bundesliga match on the road at VfB Stuttgart, was forced off after just 16 minutes of action after apparently injuring his ankle following a block of an Angelo Stiller shot. The blow comes with Bayern just days away from the second leg of its Champions League semifinals clash vs. Real Madrid, which will also be played on the road in Spain. While Guerreiro did not start the first leg, it means an early substitution on for fellow central midfielder Leon Goretzka.Guerreiro has been in and out of the lineup in his first season in Bavaria, having arrived on a free transfer from domestic rivals Borussia Dortmund. The Portuguese international had been asserting himself in the second half of the season, however, with strong performances in both midfield and even at left wing. The potential absence of the versatile 30-year-old would limit coach Thomas Tuchel’s options against Madrid — but we will await more news from the club. Defender Eric Dier’s health is also being monitored.

FC Bayern München v 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam - FLYERALARM Frauen-Bundesliga Photo by Mark Wieland/Getty Images Mia San Meisterinnen! Bayern Munich were away to Bayer Leverkusen and for the second straight year in this fixture, had a chance to clinch the Frauen-Bundesliga. After a 5-1 win by Wolfsburg yesterday, they needed a win to clinch with two matches to go, but Leverkusen wanted to spoil the party just like last season. Georgia Stanway started the scoring in the 17th minute with her seventh goal of the season. Just ten minutes later, Linda Dallman doubled the lead. Bayern cruised the rest of the first half with very little chances going Leverkusen’s way.In the second half, Bayern had chances to put the match away but failed to take advantage. In the 63rd minute a goal was given to Leverkusen’s Karczewska when the ball bounced on the line, but quite possibly did not complete cross the line. Of course, in 2024 there is still no VAR in the Frauen-Bundesliga. This was just the seventh goal allowed by Bayern and Mala Grohs.Although this made things nervy for the last 30 minutes, Bayern pushed forward and won 2-1 to win to clinch the Meisterschale! They will have to wait until the final match — away to Hoffenheim — before they can lift the trophy officially. Bayern will also look to remain unbeaten for just the second time in history over these last two league fixtures. Bayern will look to complete the domestic double down the road in Cologne on Thursday when they face Wolfsburg for the DFB-Pokal der Frauen. Wolfsburg are looking for their tenth Pokal in a row.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Ralf Rangnick becoming the latest coach to turn down Bayern Munich, along with the alleged interest in Bayer Leverkusen star Jonathan Tah? FC Bayern München v Eintracht Frankfurt - Bundesliga Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images Not another injury crisis... Does Bayern Munich have too many center-backs? If you ask head coach Thomas Tuchel right now, the answer would probably be that it is not enough.Somehow, the Bavarians are looking just a little short-handed as they round into the second leg of the Champions League semifinals against Real Madrid. Former Tottenham star Eric Dier, who has been a revelation this Rückrunde for Bayern, picked up knocks in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Stuttgart, and Dayot Upamecano was forced into action early as he recovers from his own injuries. And star Dutchman Matthijs de Ligt is still not training fully.“He [De Ligt]’s trained individually today in Munich and will join team training tomorrow,” Tuchel said in an update after the Stuttgart result (via @iMiaSanMia). “Then we’ll see whether it’s enough for Wednesday.”From the luxury of choosing among two excellent pairs of center-backs to just hoping to find enough healthy bodies for the biggest match of the season. Bayern could use a break from the injury gods — and not of the broken bone variety.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s disappointing 3-1 loss to VfB Stuttgart? FC Bayern München Training Session Photo by M. Donato/FC Bayern via Getty Images The Dutchman has his eyes on a return against Real Madrid. As Bayern Munich traveled to VfB Stuttgart for a Bundesliga match, center-back Matthijs de Ligt and attacker Jamal Musiala both hit the training grounds at Säbener Straße in hopes of getting to play against Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday.Abendzeitung journalists Victor Catalina captured a couple of pictures of the boys as they worked out: While the team prepares for the game at Stuttgart, Matthijs de Ligt resumed training with the ball at Säbener Straße. @JamalMusiala too trained individually. Thomas Tuchel hopes for both in the second leg against Real Madrid. #VfBFCB #RMAFCB #FCBayern pic.twitter.com/SObB3dyDyz— Victor Catalina (@vcatalina96) May 4, 2024De Ligt’s absence from the lineup against Real Madrid played a massive role in the match as his replacement, Kim Min-jae, made two brutal mistakes, which led to goals for Los Blancos. While Musiala did take the pitch earlier in the week during the 2-2 draw with Real Madrid, the Germany international has been battling nagging injuries over the past few weeks that have limited his availability. Surely, head coach Thomas Tuchel would like both of these players healthy and raring to go against Real Madrid on Wednesday. VfB Stuttgart v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Silas Schueller/DeFodi Images via Getty Images The injury gods really enjoy messing with Bayern, huh? Blow after blow after blow. After Bayern Munich’s Matthjis De Ligt and Konrad Laimer suffered injury issues against Eintrach Frankfurt last week and Dayot Upamecano pulling up with a problem the day before, it was Eric Dier and Raphaël Guerreiro’s turn to be hurt today. Eric Dier’s head collision, possible concussion and bleeding caught the eye and diverted attention away from Raphaël Guerreiro’s ankle issues, but both had to come off eventually. But it wasn’t just them that to suffer. Speaking after the match, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, Thomas Tuchel revealed that the medical team insisted on multiple players being unable to play the full match due to injury concerns: “We had a meeting with the medical team before the game - they were like: ‘60 minutes for this, 30 minutes for that, 60 minutes for that, this one can’t play at all’. Unfortunately, this has been the situation the whole season. Rapha Guerreiro was getting minutes to be ready for Wednesday and now he’s on crutches. Eric Dier felt a bit something in his thigh before the game, but that wasn’t the reason (he got subbed off) - it was due to the head knock. We couldn’t take any more risks with him. We then took a risk with Upa who wasn’t supposed to play for more than 30 minutes. This has unfortunately been the story of our season.”How does one juggle all these injury concerns, manage the load on the players and come up with an adequate match plan against one of the best teams in Germany? Perhaps it was impossible, especially with the squad at Tuchel’s disposal. When asked about Champions League opponents Real Madrid rotating 10 players, @iMiaSanMia captured Tuchel’s frustrated response: “You can do that when you have enough players.”Looking for more discussion on the game? VfB Stuttgart v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images Bayern knew in full context this was always going to be a tricky fixture ahead of leg 2 against Real Madrid. Bayern Munich stumbled to a 3-1 loss at VfB Stuttgart ahead of their all-important, season defining second leg of the Champions League semi-finals at Real Madrid. In full context, this was always going to be a tricky match for Thomas Tuchel and Bayern to navigate given how much rides on the next match against Real Madrid, but they still should have been able to fare far better against this season’s surprise package in the Bundesliga. Stuttgart went from a club surviving relegation to getting a Champions League spit; a truly incredible feat to have reached for Sebastian Hoeness. It looked like Bayern were going to have some fight and perhaps turn the match around when Harry Kane equalized things at 1-1 with his 37th minute penalty that cancelled out Leonidis Stergiou’s 29th minute goal. Tuchel was forced to take off both Raphaël Guerreiro and Eric Dier due to injuries after he had already made several changes to the starting lineup from the side that drew Madrid 2-2 just a few days ago. Two late goals from Woo-yeong Jong and Silas rubbed salt into the open wound for Bayern, capping out what was an underwhelming performance in rather difficult circumstances.Speaking after the match, Serge Gnabry felt that his side always knew how tricky and difficult of a test Stuttgart was going to be in between the two ties against Real Madrid. For him, Bayern did not start turning the gears enough until it was too late. “We knew it wouldn’t be easy. In my opinion, we did quite well until the last 15 minutes, when we conceded two goals. But before that, we can also turn the game around,” he explained (via tz). VfB Stuttgart v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Alex Grimm/Getty Images From the offset, Gnabry explained that part of Bayern’s strategy against Stuttgart was to sit in deep blocks and wait for their chances to get forward, which they did not exactly execute to great effect for large portions of proceedings. “We tried to stand together in the block. And I think we did that well for long stretches of the game,” he said, while adding that he felt the penalty decision he won off of Stuttgart’s Waldemar Anton was 100% right. “[Anton’s arm] it clearly hits me in the eye. I don’t go to the ground for no reason and I felt the contact,” he said in his justification for having gone down in the area. Looking ahead, Gnabry knows Bayern has to make the most of their chances against Real Madrid if they want to have a chance of progressing to the Champions League final at Wembley. He feels they were perhaps a bit too wasteful in front of goal overall in the first leg. “We have to create our chances – and then kill them. In the first leg, we could have scored one or two more goals. Maybe we need to do better,” he implored. Looking for more discussion on the game? Check our our postgame podcast! VfB Stuttgart v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images They were tactically outclassed... Bayern Munich recorded yet another loss as a goal from Leonidas Stergiou put Stuttgart in the lead 29 minutes into the game, met by another converted penalty from Harry Kane saw the game equalized. It looked like it would end that way, until an 83rd-minute header by Woo-Yeong Jeong — a former Bayern youth player gave Stuttgart the lead and Silas Katoma Mvumpa ended the tie, securing a historic home win against the Rekordmeister. Here are the match awards from Bayern’s event Bundesliga loss of the season.Jersey Swap: Silas Katoma MvupaNow, this was a difficult award to give just one player but SIlas’ impact after coming on the 78th minute is undeniable. Assisting Stuttgart’s second and finishing off their third in style, this award certainly belongs to him. This was also his first goal since October, and surely it’s one that he will cherish. Good on him.Der Kaiser: Eric DierBleeding for Bayern — Dier took two hits to the head and played on in the first half. bleeding and needing his wound to be bandaged. Dier embodies the fighter spirit Bayern fans have been craving and a phenomenal block denying Stuttgart their first goal and putting his already compromised head on the line goes to show he absolutely deserves this award. Honorable mention: Noussair Mazraoui.Fußballgott: Leon GoretzkaHonestly, none of the midfielders were outstanding. But when called upon to perform after Raphael Guerriero had to go off due to a knock, he delivered fairly well. Good game from him so he gets this award.Der Bomber: Serge GnabryGnabry did well to get in the right places going forward and even won Bayern Munich the penalty which led to the equalizer — he performed better than a rather disappointing Mathys Tel and even Eric Maxim Choupo Moting who missed a clear opportunity to take the lead.Meister of the Match: Harry KaneKane did his job and scored Bayern Munich’s only goal of the afternoon, so he wins MOTM. Yes, he could have done better, yet his only competition for this award is Eric Dier, who only got to play one half. Kane scored his 36th Bundesliga goal today, which means he is 5 goals away from Robert Lewandowski’s Bundesliga record. Could he?That’s that as Bayern face Real Madrid away next and will have to bring a performance better than the one they put up today.Looking for more discussion on the game? VfB Stuttgart v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images Well, that’s not good. Bayern Munich traveled to VfB Stuttgart for a Bundesliga match, which was the focus for the weekend, but with a date with Real Madrid in the Champions League on the horizon, things were always going to be dicey for the German Rekordmeister.Head coach Thomas Tuchel had injuries to account for, worries about wear-and-tear on key players, and just overall how to best keep his team fit for Wednesday’s UCL showdown.
