General Views of Arena Amazonia - FIFA World Cup Venues Brazil 2013 Photo by Mario Tama/Getty Images, Here we go again... Welcome back, piranha drama. Back during the 2020/21 season, Bayern Munich was making hard work of renewing David Alaba’s contract, which was set to run out in 2021. The club, Alaba and Alaba’s agent, Pini Zahavi, always struggled to meet in the middle on wage demands, struggles which quickly became toxic due to some fiery comments from Uli Hoeneß. The former Bayern president ripped into Zahavi and gave him the infamous designation of “greedy piranha.”Naturally, both Zahavi and Alaba were not happy about Hoeneß’ comments and quickly offered their own rebukes, eventually settling on a move to Real Madrid instead of renewing at Bayern. Revisiting the situation over four years later, however, Zahavi continues to express his disappointment at the comment, as captured by @iMiaSanMia: “I was very disappointed when Uli Hoeneß wanted to put me in that corner, as a greedy piranha. People who know me know that I’m the exact opposite of greedy. After Hoeneß’s words were out there, an important official from Manchester United called me and said, I can’t believe what he’s saying.”It is good to see that Zahavi got some support during such trying times. But Zahavi was not done expressing his hurt. Asked if the comment was the worst thing anyone has ever said to him, Zahavi gladly took the bait: “I think so. It’s always about who says something. If it had been someone else, it might have hurt. But I knew he [Hoeneß] talks nonsense.”Not only did he revisit the initial incident, but he also threw a barb Hoeneß’ way in the process. This seems set up for a fiery response from the member of Bayern’s supervisory board. After multiple years, it seems as if the piranha drama has gotten a sequel.

Germany v Japan: Group E - FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images The man has learned his lesson… Anyone who saw Amazon Prime’s documentary on the German national team, came away unhappy with the German players who were late for meetings. The professionalism for many players was called into question, while some folks put the onus on then-coach (and former Bayern Munich boss) Hansi Flick put not being tough enough on his players.Flick has evolved from that time, though, and has taken a more stringent stance on tardiness. According to FC Barcelona midfielder Pedri, Flick is not issuing fines to his players for being late like his predecessor, Xavi.Instead, the German manager is hitting them where it really hurts — Flick takes away playing time:Pedri said Hansi Flick's approach to discipline at Barcelona is different than Xavi's pic.twitter.com/FoXu4yJALV— ESPN FC (@ESPNFC) November 7, 2024The reality is that many professional athletes would gladly accept a fine in exchange for being 15 minutes late for a meeting or a session. Flick’s tactic of taking away playing time not only hits the individual, but also ensures that the offender also has accountability to his teammates, who — undoubtedly — want the team to be at its absolute best for every contest.Looking for a discussion on Bayern Munich’s post-Harry Kane plans and why rotation at wing could hold the kept to the team’s season? Liverpool FC v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD4 Photo by Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images 2020 and 2021 were wild times at Bayern Munich... One of the most tumultuous periods in recent Bayern Munich history was the war between sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidžić and head coach Hansi Flick back in late 2020 and early 2021. There has been a lot of speculation on what exactly was the major factor in the two men becoming so divided that Flick resigned from the club. Most have pointed to a difference in how the men wanted to staff the roster, but what if there was one, central figure that caused the schism — and that player was Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz?Crazy, right? Let’s dig in. According to former Bayern Munich star and noted pundit Lothar Matthäus (during an appearance on Sky Sport as captured by Goal), Flick desperately wanted Wirtz, but Salihamidžić did not:Florian Wirtz could have already played at FCB if Hansi Flick had prevailed. At least that’s what Lothar Matthäus says.Lothar Matthäus claimed on Sky90 among other things, that the persona Florian Wirtz put a strain on the relationship between then coach Hansi Flick and ex-sports director Hasan Salihamidzic. The current coach of FC Barcelona wanted to bring the national player to the Isar when he was young, but this failed because of Salihamidzic.Matthäus interjected at the topic of Flick: “Why did the argument with Hasan Salihamidzic happen? Florian Wirtz was a point of argument/discussion between Hansi Flick and Bayern Munich. He would have been available. But at Bayern Munich, they didn’t want him and Hansi Flick wanted him.”When asked by moderator Patrick Wasserziehr who advocated a Wirtz signing at that time, Matthäus replied: “Hansi Flick.” Wasserziehr also asked who didn’t want to get Wirtz at FC Bayern at the time. The record national player then said: “Hasan, apparently not.” This “came across like that/appeared to be the case/seemed evident in conversations” back then.Flick also never lost that affinity for Wirtz and gave him his first call-up to the German national team when he took over as boss: Shortly after, he became national coach and nominated Wirtz for the senior national squad when he had only played three Bundesliga games. “It doesn’t surprise me that Hansi Flick invited him after three games,” said Matthäus. The 59-year-old is the ideal coach for young players and knows “how to deal with them. He is showing that now at Barcelona.”There have been many, many rumors on which players the men disagreed over, but Matthäus dropping this bomb on everyone is certainly something to discuss. Philadelphia Union II v New England Revolution II The Red&Gold Football partnership has hit its’ first benchmark... In the March of 2023, Bayern Munich and Los Angeles FC launched a joint initiative called Red&Gold Football. The commonly stated purpose of this venture was “the promotion of young talents”, but the question was always how a club from the United States and a club from Germany could possibly cooperate in this regard. Now we might have a better idea, as the first transfer of between the two clubs has reportedly been made, as captured by @iMiaSanMia:Bayern have signed U.S. youth international forward/winger Bajung Darboe (18) from LAFC. Bayern will pay a fee of $1.5 million. Darboe will head to Germany in January. He initially went to Bayern in 2022 to train and the club liked what they saw. Two years later, they have a deal done to bring him back permanently.Taking a look into Darboe’s road to Bayern reveals some curiosities. Initially part of Minnesota United’s youth system and playing with the U-17s at just 13 years of age, he was pursued by many different clubs before being snapped up by Philadelphia Union in the October of 2020. He was then released in the January of 2023 before being picked up by LAFC later that year.He then even went on trial to Bayern, as mentioned in the report, though it was during time at Philadelphia. In a partnership with LAFC, Bayern may be trying to re-open the door to American talent that was closed to them when the partnership with FC Dallas ran afoul. However, players without a European passport cannot be signed by a European club before they turn 18, so Bayern had to wait another two years to sign the youngster. Having celebrated his 18th birthday on November 7th, however, the first reports about Bayern’s signing of Darboe came out on November 8th. It seems as if negotiations did not take long.Looking for a discussion on Bayern Munich’s post-Harry Kane plans and why rotation at wing could hold the kept to the team’s season? FC Bayern München v 1. FC Union Berlin - Bundesliga Photo by Marcel Engelbrecht - firo sportphoto/Getty Images Bayern Munich is on break...now, what? Bayern worried about Tel’s progress (Sport Bild’s Tobi Altschäffl via @iMiaSanMia)Rumors of Bayern Munich’s interest in a post-Harry Kane plan for striker have been swirling for about a week, but the genesis of the rumors is — allegedly — that the club is not feeling great about the development of Mathys Tel: One of the reasons Bayern are already exploring the market for a long-term Harry Kane successor is that the development of Mathys Tel has stalled. That’s why a loan move for Tel in January is a realistic option. The primary issue with Tel is that it is hard to figure out if he best fits as a striker, a winger, or something in-between, like a wide-forward. In reality, his best position might be as a part of a two-striker system, but it would seem doubtful that Bayern Munich would shift to that kind of alignment any time soon. So...then what? It seems like both parties are open to Tel going out on loan, which would serve two purposes: It would give Tel the necessary game time to continue his development. It would buy the Bavarians some time to figure out how they really feel about Tel and what position they see him playing in the long-term. Clearly, Tel is part of the mix for consideration for what happens after Kane, but he is just a small piece of that puzzle. VfL Bochum 1848 v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Photo by Pau Barrena/Getty Images The Bavarians keep chugging along. They may be the only ones. Was last season just a bad dream? Bayern Munich is back to its regularly scheduled dominance of the Bundesliga...and it isn’t close. The Bavarians are now five points clear at the top of the table after a 1-0 win over St Pauli on Saturday. They have over twice the goals scored (33 to 15) compared to second-placed RB Leipzig this season to date. Vincent Kompany and his squad boast an 8W-2D-0L record and have given up just seven goals in ten matchdays. Bayern is currently on pace for nearly 90 points. It’s a start befitting the finest of the Rekordmeister’s record-breaking run of 11 straight Bundesliga titles, which Bayer Leverkusen snapped only last season. The table as it now stands (pending Eintracht Frankfurt’s match on Sunday at VfB Stuttgart, which will not affect the top two spots):Bayern now 5 points clear at the top of the table following RB Leipzig's draw against Gladbach pic.twitter.com/JHATsW6SpW— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) November 9, 2024Xabi Alonso and Leverkusen look to have run dry of the secret stuff that powered them to an invincible Bundesliga season last year. RB Leipzig drew 0-0 to Borussia Mönchengladbach while Borussia Dortmund lost 3-1 at Mainz, after an early red card to German international midfielder Emre Can. FC Bayern München v 1. FC Union Berlin - Bundesliga Photo by Christina Pahnke - sampics/Getty Images Isn’t it too early for a kit release? Not according to adidas. The 2024/25 season is just three months old, yet we’re already getting new kit leaks for the 2025/26 season. Well, in a way. Now, this isn’t exactly a Bayern Munich-specific leak. Adidas have just leaked the new template for their goalkeeper kits for the following season, specifically for their lineup of “elite clubs.” Bayern, of course, is a part of that coveted lineup, which also features Real Madrid, Manchester United, Arsenal FC, Juventus, Liverpool, Newcastle United, and AS Roma, the latter of which got an absolute banger for their current home kit. Take a look. AS Roma v Torino - Serie A Photo by Paolo Bruno/Getty Images Anyway, back to Bayern. The new goalkeeper kit template will be used by all the elite clubs as per usual. According to the good people at Footy Headlines, this time with X user @Rode1Kits, the template is based on the 25 Tiro Goalkeeper Competition kit. Adidas 25-26 Elite Team Goalkeeper Kits "Leaked" [ @Rode1Kits]: https://t.co/uXhLB35uBv— Footy Headlines (@Footy_Headlines) November 7, 2024There’s nothing too notable about the design, other than the ripple effects that point outwards from the shirt’s chest sponsor. It’s definitely a more subdued look than, well, whatever you call the current season’s template. The sleeves seem to have lighter color shades than the body. This begs the question: will adidas go back to releasing long-sleeve shirts, or will they persist with the short-sleeve shirt/long-sleeve undershirt combo that they have tried in the past few seasons? That remains to be seen.If the leaked images are to be trusted, Bayern’s main colorway seems to be green, the same as Arsenal and Newcastle. Juventus and Man United will be blue, Liverpool and Roma black, and Real Madrid going solo in purple. There will almost certainly be discussions among fans about whether adidas are just lazily copy-pasting the same design and color for multiple clubs. That being said, every club will receive kits with multiple colorways as always, depending on the fixture and opponent.

FC St. Pauli 1910 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Sebastian El-Saqqa - firo sportphoto/Getty Images They fought hard and underlined their ability to stay in the Bundesliga despite the loss St Pauli delivered a phenomenal defensive performance in their first match against Bayern Munich in over 13 years. Back in 2011, the Bavarian giants romped to an incredible 8-1 victory over the Weltpokalsiegerbesieger, leading to a swift and demoralizing relegation. Finally back in the Bundesliga, however, St Pauli’s defense was much more prepared for the task at hand. Though they still lost, limiting Bayern to just one long range goal was something the entire Pauli team was proud of:“We didn’t expect a clear win,” sporting director Andreas Bornemann admitted, via FCBayern.com. “You can only take your hat off to the team for their defensive performance. There were one or two moments that we could’ve made a bit more of, and then maybe we could’ve nicked a point. It wouldn’t have been undeserved when you look at our running and defensive performance.”Head coach Alexander Blessin agreed with the general assessment: “If you only lose 1-0 to Bayern, you’ve done a lot of things right overall. We didn’t allow many chances. We knew we wouldn’t get many chances from open play because they just press well. We were well in the game but then Musiala comes up with a fantastic goal. We should’ve had better communication there. From then it’s difficult. We left everything on the pitch, gave everything, so I can’t criticise the team.”Though Blessin could not find fault with the team, defender Hauke Wahl still could not shake off the feeling that there was more for them in this game: “We’re disappointed we weren’t able to get anything. We defended very well over 90 minutes. Bayern didn’t have many clear chances – one or two, yes, but Bayern will always get them. The goal came from nothing, though, from giving the ball away. We also had our moments but unfortunately it didn’t go our way today.”Fellow defender Lars Ritzka summed it up the best, though: “At the end of the day, a narrow defeat is still a defeat. Regardless whether it’s 1-0, 2-0 or 3-0, we’re left without any points, which is a shame.”Despite the impressive performance, St Pauli are left with just 8 points after matchday 10 and are fighting against relegation. If they can maintain their superb defense, however, they retain a good chance at remaining in the Bundesliga.Looking for more on the game? Then check out our postgame podcast! Sporting Clube de Portugal v Manchester City - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD4 The man of the hour, but maybe just not the right hour for Bayern Munich to make a big signing. | Photo by Gualter Fatia/Getty Images After the Haaland saga, the club probably doesn’t want another pure, physical No. 9 slipping from its grasp. Wait a minute... isn’t that exactly what Harry Kane is? Viktor Gyökeres is the real deal, and is probably going to be among the most hotly contested players next summer. The 26 year old Swedish No. 9 has already notched a staggering 23 goals and four assists in just 17 appearances for Sporting CP. This includes a hat-trick in Sporting’s recent 4-1 demolition of Manchester City in the Champions league. Given Bayern Munich’s obsession with pure no.9s (and for good reason), he is an obvious transfer target. With Florian Plettenberg recently reporting that Bayern Munich are closely monitoring the player’s situation, it feels like the management might be up to something... or maybe not. Sure, the player is incredible, fits Bayern’s profile perfectly, and is the same ilk of striker as a certain Robert Lewandowski, who enjoyed tremendous success with Bayern Munich, including a historic sextuple. However, last we checked, Bayern Munich already has a 6’2” striker called Harry Kane, some half-decent bloke from England who has notched 17 goals and nine assists in just 16 appearances, which is a G+A ratio just a wee bit better than that of the exciting player in discussion. “Well, but... Kane is quite old, isn’t he?” I hear you say. Depends on what you consider old. Kane is just 31 (unbelievable as it sounds), which is just five years shy of Gyökeres’ 26. It is the same age gap Kane shares with Robert Lewandowski. FC Bayern München v 1. FC Union Berlin - Bundesliga Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images Hurrikane has been in torrid form this season. It doesn’t seem conceivable that Kane would be slowing down significantly in the next three seasons. The striker also happens to be the best playmaker-forward in world football at the moment, which is something you simply do not replace. Kane is under contract at Bayern till summer 2027. Unless the club decides to recover some of the money it spent on signing him and reinvest it on Gyökeres, this transfer makes no sense whatsoever.Especially if Bayern is to be involved in a race for the Swede’s signature as early as next summer, which is the most likely outcome. Let’s face it... Gyökeres is most probably jumping ship soon, and this puts the club in a difficult spot. Is the brass willing to prematurely terminate what is a beautiful and successful relationship with Harry Kane only to gamble on the younger Gyökeres? Or does it choose to stick to a known commodity that is delivering goals and dishing out assists for fun?Gyökeres is expected to cost at least 60-70 million euros, which is a HUGE chunk of money. Yes, the player’s quality and production absolutely warrants the fee, but is Bayern really in need of a player of a similar profile? The argument here is that Bayern should stick to Harry Kane through summer of ‘26 at the very least. There is one alternative, tantalizing option however. It remains to be seen if it is feasible, but... if Bayern somehow manages to convince Gyökeres to stall for another season, or negotiates a favourable transfer fee and secures personal terms with the player, Bayern could allow both players to share minutes for a season before a probable Kane phaseout. This would be the ideal scenario, but it feels like little more than a fairytale. It is highly doubtful Gyökeres signs for Bayern with Kane already at the club. Sigh. FC Bayern München v 1. FC Union Berlin - Bundesliga Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images Who do you believe? As expected, the bombshell dropped by Lothar Matthäus during his appearance on Sky Sport, elicited a response from former Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidžić.Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) contacted Salihamidžić, who responded to the story that Matthäus put out — that Hansi Flick and Salihamidžić went to war over Florian Wirtz (with Flick wanting Wirtz and Salihamidžić declining to pursue the youngster).“There was never this argument that Lothar Matthäus is talking about. I also never spoke to Hansi Flick about a transfer of Florian Wirtz. That’s complete nonsense. Lothar, in his role as an expert, should check his sources more carefully before spreading such unfounded rumors and not constantly spread lies about me and FC Bayern,” said Salihamidžić. “It’s true that we followed Florian Wirtz’s development since he was a youth player. Our entire scouting department as well as the club were impressed by his talent and abilities. After several attempts, however, we had to accept that Florian wanted to develop in his family environment and complete his school education at home. We respected that.“During Julian Nagelsmann’s time, we looked at Wirtz more closely, even though he had just torn his ACL. That alone shows how convinced we were of the player. But at the time, a transfer was not feasible due to his contract situation and his career planning.”Matthäus stood by his story and offered this retort per Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “I know for sure that Hansi wanted to bring the young Florian Wirtz to Bayern when he was just 17-years-old and that the club did not comply with this wish. My comments were not directed against Hasan. I wanted to say that Hansi always has an eye on young players and prefers to work with them. He’s currently proving this again at FC Barcelona,” said Matthäus Well...at least “FC Hollywood: Senior Edition” is going strong. FBL-AWARD-BALLON D’OR-2024 Photo by FRANCK FIFE/AFP via Getty Images If you score 50 goals a season for us, we’ll give you half off on your 6th year of learning German. Deal? Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane was one of the players honored by the Ballon D’or ceremony, as he shared the Gerd Müller trophy with Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe (or would have, if the Frenchman had bothered to show up). While on stage to collect his award, the former Tottenham Hotspur striker was asked a few questions. One of them was about the area of Kane’s game he would most like to improve. Kane had this to say:“Maybe my speed. I need to get a bit more speed,” Kane admits via @iMiaSanMia. “But I don’t know if my age is gonna help me with that.”Yeah, we all know speed cannot be taught...right? What can be taught is the German language, but it’s not so easy to learn at 31 years of age. Therefore, when asked about whether his German is improving, the England captain had to ask for more time:“Nein. I’m learning. I’m doing two lessons a week,” Kane amends, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “We have a good teacher there at FC Bayern. For me it’s difficult, but hopefully I’ll be there for many years and at some stage be able to talk a little German.”It would be rather funny if Kane decided to stay in Germany for the rest of his career, not for the trophies but to finally master this slippery and difficult language. Sorry, Premier League fans fans, it looks the intrigue of figuring out “der, die, das” overpowers any emotional connection that would convince him to return to his home country.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s upcoming Champions League match with Benfica, along with a reaction to Bayern Munich drawing Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal? Spain v Germany: Quarter-Final - UEFA EURO 2024 Photo by Alex Caparros - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images Sané is back in the Germany squad for the first time since the Euros this past summer. Due to a thigh strain injury to VfB Stuttgart’s Deniz Undav, Julian Nagelsmann has made the decision to call up Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sané to the Germany national team for the upcoming pair of UEFA Nations League matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Hungary (DFB). While the two players do not exactly play the exact same position for their respective clubs, Sané is considered to be the direct replacement for Undav in the squad, as the former might not have been involved in the squad at all had it not been for Undav’s injury concern.Undav was a major doubt to take part in Stuttgart’s Bundesliga clash against Eintracht Frankfurt and he was ultimately left out of the squad entirely, prompting Nagelsmann to make the personnel change in the Germany squad. Undav picked up his injury in Stuttgart’s midweek Champions League loss to Atalanta and he was replaced by Ermedin Demirović in the 56th minute of the 2-0 losing effort. For Sané, this will be his first time back in the Germany squad since the European Championships over the summer. During that tournament, he only made two starts from Germany’s total of six matches up the quarter-finals, where they lost to Spain in extra time in Stuttgart. During that stretch of matches, Sané was still not considered to be 100%, as he was still not fully recovered from his pubic bone injury that caused his minutes to be managed for the end of Bayern’s season as they fought to get to the Champions League final. Germany Training Session And Press Conference - Blankenhain Training Camp Day 4 After the Euros were over, Sané had a successful operation to repair his persistent injury, but it caused him to have a slow start to this current season on a count of getting back to 100% fit and healthy. He missed out on Nagelsmann’s squads for the past two international breaks, but he now has a chance to re-establish himself as a mainstay in the setup for Die Mannschaft.

The start was brutal, with the 4-1 loss to FC Barcelona a major blot on the record, but the overall record of six wins in seven is not bad. Head coach Vincent Kompany was all too happy to point out how difficult the past weeks have been and gave some context on the struggles the tough schedule has caused: “I’m really happy with how the team got through this period of games. We had a 15-minute delay on Wednesday and Hamburg is about the furthest place [away from Munich] in Germany and then we kick off at 3:00 again on Saturday. Okay. We just got on with it,” Kompany stated, via @iMiaSanMia. “We performed really well in terms of [the circumstances].”Notably, the other Champions League contenders in the Bundesliga have not fared as well as Bayern has: “You put this into context with the results of Leverkusen in Bochum and Dortmund in Mainz, and you appreciate how valuable this win was.”With lawn ball sports Leipzig also dropping points the same matchday, Bayern’s victory over attrition and St Pauli has seen the club move five points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table. If the match was not as tasty as some may have hoped, the larger context of the match may yet satisfy Bayern fans.Kompany: "I'm really happy with how the team got through this period of games. FC St. Pauli 1910 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images Well...maybe? Bayern Munich’s strategic vision for its roster can sometimes appear to be...all over the place. After giving midfielder Leon Goretzka every indication that he was a surplus piece and not necessarily needed any more, club sporting director Christoph Freund indicated that — maybe — the talk was just a bit premature. Goretzka turned in a solid performance in Bayern Munich’s 1-0 victory over St Pauli on Saturday and Freund was asked if the midfielder still had a future in Bavaria after the match. “You can see that. If we didn’t need him, he wouldn’t play. Leon is a Bayern player, he’s doing really well and was important again today,” Freund told Bild’s Michel Schröer (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). Sometimes...it just seems like things are a bit fickle in the executive offices at Säbener Straße.Looking for more on the game? Then check out our postgame podcast!
