Holstein Kiel v 1. FC Heidenheim 1846 - Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images Uh-oh...Bayern Munich might have to ward off some competition for its wunderkind... Bayern Munich loanee Paul Wanner is having a good season on loan at Heidenheim — in fact, a campaign that has caught the attention of many clubs. Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund acknowledged that Wanner is drawing a lot of attention. “We are very happy and satisfied with Paul’s development. He has had a great start to the season, is playing well and having a lot of minutes. He is a player with whom we are planning our future, so we’re not thinking about other things. Of course, other clubs are interested. But we are planning with him in the future at Bayern Munich,” said Freund (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). Sounds good, right? Much like Julian Nagelsmann found out with his ill-fated invitation to Wanner to attend German national team camp next week, the kid might have other ideas. Sport Bild’s Christian Falk posted news on some of the options that Wanner is considering for a potential move. You will like none of them if you are a Bayern Munich fan, who wants to see Wanner at the Allianz Arena next season: Paul Wanner (18) of FC Bayern (on loan at Heidenheim) is on the list of:
❇️ Bayer Leverkusen (successor of Florian Wirtz)
❇️ RB Leipzig (successor of Xavi Simons)
❇️ Bayern want Florian Wirtz (21). FC Bayern Munchen v SL Benfica - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD4 They’ll have to get really creative to snub him again. | Photo by Sebastian Frej/MB Media/Getty Images According to Farce Football, Musiala wasn’t among the top 30 players in the world. It is true that few people take the Ballon d'Or seriously. However, despite being a trophy awarded to the best PR team, Bayern Munich players have been snubbed from the shortlists time and again, with several deserving players falling short of winning a deserved award. Franck Ribéry (2013), Manuel Neuer (2014), Robert Lewandowski (2020 and 2021) are some of the names that spring to mind almost instantly. The 2024 Ballon d'Or top 30 shortlist had a new level of absurdity in store. Jamal Musiala was completely excluded despite being a key player for both Bayern Munich and Germany. Granted, Bayern’s season was not exactly helpful in this regard, but being among the Euro 2024’s top scorers while also playing a pivotal role in Bayern Munich reaching the Champions League semi-finals is something that simply can’t be ignored.Artem Dovbyk, Martin Ødegaard, Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and William Saliba are all players who went trophyless last season. Yet somehow they all find themselves in a list from which one of the best footballer’s of today has been excluded. If Musiala wasn’t motivated enough already, he’s quickly silencing everyone and laying any silly discussions about the current season to bed early with his scintillating performances. @iMiaSanMia had this quick stat-sheet to add to what already looks like a fantastic season in the making for the phenom.Jamal Musiala:

• 6 goals in his last 5 competitive games
• Scored the opening goal in 3 Bundesliga games this season
• Involved in at least a goal in all away league games this season

[Sky] pic.twitter.com/lkRa6OHWD1— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) November 9, 2024Yes, you’re reading those stats correctly. He has already notched a whopping 9G+3A in just 14 games this season, while scoring one and assisting three in just two appearances for Germany. And it feels like he is only getting started. If this torrid start leads to a trophy-laden season for Bayern, Musiala will become undeniable. As the world keeps its eyes focused on Lamine Yamal, Jude Bellingham, and Cole Palmer, Jamal Musiala will continue to shine away from the spotlight until he shines brighter than the spotlight. And then, hopefully, his case would be impossible to ignore.Looking for more on the game? 1. FC Heidenheim 1846 v TSG 1899 Hoffenheim - Bundesliga Photo by Sebastian Widmann/Getty Images Wanner’s mind seems to be made up regarding his international future. Bayern Munich loanee Paul Wanner has excelled at Heidenheim this term, as last season’s surprise package looks to build on the success of its first Bundesliga campaign following promotion. Wanner has had Germany and Austria fans waiting with bated breath for his final decision on which country he chooses to represent. The player has had contact with head coaches from both teams, and in a recent call with Julian Nagelsmann he informed the manager that he wouldn’t be joining the squad for the upcoming international break.Bild (via @iMiaSanMia) captured the player speaking about his development-centered decision, saying, “I think everyone knows that I have a great relationship with Julian, as we have known each other for a very long time and we are therefore in regular contact. I said weeks ago that I just want to develop as much as possible in the next few months and that I don’t want to concern myself with the topic of my international future. I just want to follow my path and my development. I’m looking forward to playing for Germany U-21s and establishing myself there. I want to continue my path there step by step. There’s far too much fuss about players who have the opportunity to play for two countries. I don’t want to take advantage of that, but I rather want to clearly and sustainably earn this status as a senior international player.”Wanner’s choice to develop at a sustainable pace is wise. Far too often have football fans seen too high of expectations placed on a player too early in their career. While it can’t be known for certain if the resulting pressure is always the reason for underwhelming development, players like Youssoufa Moukoko can’t have benefitted from the massive expectations that were piled on him at Borussia Dortmund. While he won’t say it directly, it seems as though Wanner’s committed to Germany, and any hesitance at this point may only exist in case he cannot reach a level good enough to star for Germany. Either way, this is a win for Germany fans, if he doesn’t live up to his potential his declaring for Austria won’t be a huge loss (especially with Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala as permanent fixtures in the squad), and if he does Nagelsmann will have an excellent player on his hands. FC St. Pauli 1910 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Sebastian El-Saqqa - firo sportphoto/Getty Images It’s great to see St Pauli back in the Bundesliga; hopefully they stay up Bayern Munich and St Pauli share a storied history, such as the story of Pauli beating Bayern shortly after the latter’s Club World Cup victory and seeing the resulting nickname of Weltpokalsiegerbesieger (victor over Club World Cup winners) stick for the next two decades. Still, this history is one that has left both sets of fans affable towards one another. So when the two teams were finally set to play against each other after over 13 years, the fans had something special prepared, which sporting director Christoph Freund noticed:“There was a really special atmosphere in the stadium today, even before the game with the tifos from both sets of fans,” Freund commented, via FCBayern.com. “There aren’t many nicer places to play a game of football – you have to enjoy that.”But at the end of the day, despite the niceties, Bayern’s number one priority remained the three points: “We really wanted to go into the international break with a victory. We’ve had a lot of games and intense weeks. It wasn’t easy today, they were well prepared for us, but we controlled the match and didn’t give anything away, even though we didn’t create as many chances. In the end it’s a deserved win.”Looking for more on the game? Then check out our postgame podcast! Listen to it below or on Spotify! As always, we appreciate all the support!

FC St. Pauli 1910 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images They can’t all be easy...right? Bayern Munich had been on tear of smashing lower-tier teams in the Bundesliga, so naturally many assumed that St Pauli would be the victim. Not so fast my friend. The home side frustrated Bayern Munich and kept it to 1-0 before succumbing to the clock. All-in-all, it was a good performance against a juggernaut for St Pauli. “It doesn’t always have to be spectacular. It was a difficult game for us today, but we stayed patient and didn’t make the opponent look better than they were. The opponent defended well and concentrated on defending for 90 minutes - that’s not so easy for us. Of course, you always hope that the opponent will open up a bit. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen today, but we were very confident until the end,” said Kimmich (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). It was evident early on that St Pauli was going to be a handful, but the Bavarians could not find a way to consistently create good chances. The Bayern Munich attack is a work in progress in this respect, but the talent is there. Now, it is just a matter of finding a way to work together through these congested, low blocks that the team keep facing. Looking for more on the game? Then check out our postgame podcast! FC St. Pauli 1910 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Christina Pahnke - sampics/Getty Images He truly is a man born with incredible eloquence, is he not? Fresh off of narrowly winning with Bayern Munich in the cool November weather against St Pauli in the Bundesliga, Jamal Musiala then turns his attention to Germany and the upcoming international break. What kind of cool and exciting adventures will he and the rest of the Germany team be up to? What kind of cool, collected answer does he have? Here is what Musiala had to say:“I have many friends in the national team. It’s always a nice time there,” Musiala said, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “We’re playing good football and enjoying ourselves. It’s going to be a cool 10 days.”What a cool answer. This will be Germany’s chance to finally win a Nations League group, if they can confirm their cool performances from October. Hopefully, the cool conditions of the matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Hungary will not deter Germany from finally winning that Nations League group and making it to the extremely cool Nations League knockouts, which every team so desperately wants to contest in.Looking for more on the game? SC Freiburg v FC Bayern München - Google Pixel Frauen Bundesliga Photo by Daniela Porcelli/Getty Images for DFB Can the Bavarians stabilize in time for the Champions League? Bayern Munich dropped points once again in the Frauen-Bundesliga on Friday in a 2-2 decision on the road at SC Freiburg. The result sees the Bavarians slide to third in the table, level on points but behind on goal differential versus Eintracht Frankfurt, and narrowly behind league leaders VfL Wolfsburg. The first half was brutal and threatened to get away from Bayern fast.A poor clearance from a set piece fell kindly for Freiburg’s Lisa Karl in the 16th minute and left Bayern keeper Mala Grohs, just back from injury, with no chance.Freiburg’s second goal required no luck. Shekiera Martinez cut a swathe through Bayern’s defense and Cora Zicai was only too happy to be there on the end of it to lash home into the net. Grohs spared Bayern’s blushes not long after when Freiburg nearly caught her out for a third. There was scarce any life signs in Bayern heading into the break, but staring a big loss in the face, the Frauen managed to turn it around. Alara Şehitler poached a goal in the 50th minute after keeper and defender collided defending a dangerous Giulia Gwinn cross. Then in stoppage time, substitute forward Weronika Zawistowska latched on to a second ball in the scramble after a free kick and poked the ball through to the back of the net, restoring parity.Bayern’s Lea Schüller was substituted off after a dangerous looking collision with the goalkeeper. The hits keep coming for a Bayern team that is just holding on lately. The UEFA Women’s Champions League awaits on Tuesday with a home match vs. Vålerenga.

FC St. Pauli 1910 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images That’s not a bad way to do it... Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala has long been earmarked as a future superstar, with the club eager to renew the youngster and make him the face of the club. But there remained the question of whether his output has ever managed to reflect the youngster’s incredible feats in a game. For all his incredible skills and dribbles, does he do enough in front of goal? But Musiala has been out to answer this question with an empathetic “yes” this season, notching his 5th goal in 8 Bundesliga matches with an incredible long range strike against St Pauli. Having taken a step back in his goal contributions last season, Musiala admits that adding goals and assists to his improvement as a player has been on his mind: “I think I already made steps forward last season. The goals and assists were a bit missing, but now I’m getting them along with good performances,” Musiala says, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “I’m feeling better and trying to play as many games at a high level as possible.”At the moment, the former Chelsea FC youngster is scaling heights not many would have believed possible. Did anybody think Musiala had that kind of shot, with that kind of swerve, shot power and single minded ferocity on it, in his locker? Now the world knows he does, though. It was yet another signal from Jamal Musiala to spell out a simple message: Look out, Europe. Looking for more on the game? Then check out our postgame podcast! FC St. Pauli 1910 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images We review Bayern’s win over St Pauli in the Bundesliga. Bayern Munich faced recently promoted FC St Pauli in a game everyone thought Bayern would run off with. But that wasn’t exactly the case. St Pauli put up an incredible performance against Der Rekordmeister tonight, with a rock solid defense and a creative offense (something Bayern lacked) that they used to hold their own. After a hard fought game like tonight’s, there’s bound to be loads to analyze. So let’s get right into it on this edition of our postgame show: A quick review of what was different tonight, and what it meant for the rest of the game A (mostly) critical analysis of Bayern’s midfield and offense, and why Leon Goretzka doesn’t start anymoreFC St. Pauli’s surprisingly solid performance today on the big stage Jamal Musiala is Vincent Kompany’s machineCan Bayern do better than this?Be sure to stay tuned to Bavarian Podcast Works for all of your up to date coverage on Bayern Munich and Germany. FC St. Pauli 1910 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images St Pauli is back in the German top flight after 13 years....Bayern did not deliver. A singular goal that came in the form of a rocket from Jamal Musiala was enough for Bayern Munich to overcome newly-promoted St Pauli. Efforts from both teams went unanswered as the game ended 1-0 and Bayern further consolidated their lead atop the Bundesliga table while St Pauli faces the threat of entering the relegation zone. Here are some observations from the game. What went well, and what didn't Kim min-jae and Dayot Upamecano had a fairly good afternoon. Alphonso Davies continues to impress again and again, and Joshua Kimmich once again sets a clear standard of consistency, connecting play really well. Bayern had a few interesting set-piece starts themselves which were fun to see. In the end, Bayern won the game and came away with all three points, but this was far from the performance you'd expect.Kompany’s match plan was not clearly evident. Bayern had a lot of possession and little impact. The team kept making horizontal and backward passes, succumbing to the pressure Pauli applied on the squad.Bayern also didn’t utilize clear avenues of attack, such as quick counters on opposition set-pieces. Almost all of Pauli’s set-pieces are taken by center-back Eric Smith, which leaves them with a missing defender in the middle of their backline right after corners or free kicks. This was a great opportunity for Bayern to turn around and make a quick charge — but the buildup was always slowed by unnecessary passes or bad decisions.Slow and ineffective would sum up the Bayern team in general today. For a coach who prides himself on his attacking principles, a game as boring as this one isn't a good look. A conversation about Leon Goretzka (& the attack)Goretzka was handed a rare start tonight and yet again underdelivered. It is becoming increasingly clear why coaches do not trust him in the slightest to start games for club and country anymore, The performance was lackluster and saw Goretzka effectively killing Bayern’s chances on multiple occasions while misplacing passes and failing to make himself available as a passing option in buildup. Not to mention the incessant backpasses throughout the game. This was Goretzka’s chance to prove himself again and he didn't take it at all. Leroy Sané had a similar showing and didn't deliver an impact. Neither did Kingsley Coman for that matter. Bayern’s lack of quality in attack becomes increasingly clear with every passing game — none of Bayern’s forwards seem to know how to penetrate a strong defensive set-up and are overly reliant on ineffective long balls and shots from outside the box. Harry Kane didn't help either, and when in the box he waited for a ball that rarely came. Chance creation lacks any creativity at all, barring Jamal Musiala: and that brings us to the next point, Jamal Musiala is the best player in the worldJamal Musiala continues to demonstrate that he can do more than just dribble perfectly. He virtually carried the team’s attack today and was the only burst of explosiveness on the pitch. His screamer tonight marked 6 goals in the last 5 games, and there is simply nothing more that needs to be said. He is the greatest gift Bayern have received from the football gods and Bayern need to do everything in their power to lock him down and extend that contract. St Pauli is beginning to adapt to Bundesliga footballHaving followed Pauli throughout their brilliant run and consequent promotion last season, they were certainly bringing an exciting promise to the Bundesliga. However, the departure of phenomenon Marcel Hartel to the MLS and coach Fabian Hürzeler to Brighton over the summer brought up questions about whether Pauli would still be able to cope with the top tier of German football.New coach Alexander Blessin has certainly crushed any such concerns as the club is having a decent start in a new league with a distinct and functional style of play…

FC St. Pauli 1910 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Sebastian El-Saqqa - firo sportphoto/Getty Images As a fan, it is great to see the moments of genuine friendship in the squad. This a good example of one. One could see the moment that Alphonso Davies switched from interview mode to a more conversational attitude. He answered questions on Bayern Munich’s performance in a 1-0 victory over St Pauli in the Bundesliga in a typically intelligent fashion, but when interviewer Archie Rhind-Tutt switched to asking asking about Jamal Musiala, Davies ducked his head, unsuccessfully trying to hide the delighted chuckle that escaped him.But he would carry over that delighted and overjoyed attitude at the younger player’s performance to his response to Musiala’s performance, sporting an enormous grin as he lavished praise on the youngster: “What a strike. He’s a special guy, a special talent,” Davies happily confirmed, via @iMiaSanMia. “Normally he is in the box, and I guess he told himself today ‘I’mma have to shoot from outside the box’ and what a strike that was. Wow.”The “Phonziala” friendship is very well known and it is this connection that the interviewer strived for Davies to use as he addresses the former Chelsea FC youngster’s incredible recent form. Davies was all too happy to respond: “As a friend, I just want to tell him to keep going. I mean, just playing your game, keep enjoying, keep doing what you’re doing. Just have fun with that. I hope he keeps [playing as great as he is right now] over and over every game, that’s for sure.”That final sentiment is one every Bayern and Musiala fan would agree with at this moment in time. As Musiala’s #1 fan #2 fan behind this author, Davies will be there at his side to help him do exactly that.Alphonso Davies speaking to @archiert1 about today's win and Jamal Musiala's goal

FC St. Pauli 1910 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Christina Pahnke - sampics/Getty Images Well...he was right. Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany was not looking to make excuses after his team’s 1-0 victory over St Pauli. However, the manager did want to acknowledge that the timing of things was always going to make this a tough contest. “This game came at a tricky moment for us because we had a Champions League game on Wednesday. But we have a very good squad and had to change some players today. We played against a very compact team, with high energy and a very good game management. Even when we scored the first goal, they didn’t panic and stayed patient,” Kompany said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “They put a bit more pressure towards the end of the game. I can value this win a lot. When you look at what Leverkusen did in Bochum and what Dortmund did in Mainz, there are no easy games. And today was a tough game. It’s a very good win for us.”Bayern Munich will now head off for a break and seek to keep everyone healthy, so that that the team can come back and look to improve its form when it regroups.Looking for more on the game? FC Bayern München v SL Benfica - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD4 Photo by F. Noever/FC Bayern via Getty Images Here we go again... It’s happening...again.Bayern Munich’s hallowed grounds of the Allianz Arena are going to play hose to another NFL game — one that pits two of the absolute worst teams in the league against each in what will likely not amount to much more than a bunch of Americans waking up, only to forget the Carolina Panthers and New York Giants are in Munich. Sure, the local municipalities are likely to get a boost with hotels, restaurants, and other miscellaneous businesses, which is a great thing. FC Bayern München v SL Benfica - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD4 Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images A professional win. It was a return to the lineup for Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sané, a new combination in attack after both came off the bench in the Champions League mid-week win over SL Benfica.A return too for Leon Goretzka, the veteran midfielder who has fallen far down the pecking order in Bavaria but has finally found his way into a Vincent Kompany XI.The result: a second 1-0 victory in a row, a second game with overwhelming domination in possession, and a second game without conceding a single shot on target. This time Bayern had several really golden chances to punch in a second goal — Leroy Sané, Jamal Musiala, Harry Kane all producing moments of real craft in a a span of just a few minutes — and St Pauli may count itself lucky the floodgates never opened. Now it’s time for another international break. And the games get hot and heavy after that, with Augsburg, Paris Saint-Germain, and Borussia Dortmund awaiting in a one-week span on the other side of it.How did Bayern do today? FC St. Pauli 1910 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Christina Pahnke - sampics/Getty Images Are we back to “a win is a win”? Die Folgen: Bayern’s 1-0 win over St. Pauli (Bavarian Football Works)Bayern Munich entered Millerntor-Stadion looking to take care of business against St. Pauli and while it was not always aesthetic, the Bavarians did just that with a 1-0 victory. It was not a fulfilling victory, but it was one that Bayern Munich needed to maintain its lead in the Bundesliga. Here are some quick hitters on the match: As always, let’s take a look at Bayern Munich’s starting XI:

Confirmation of today’s starting line-up! #FCBayern #MiaSanMia | #FCSPFCB pic.twitter.com/gFlvuvlihQ— FC Bayern (@FCBayernEN) November 9, 2024Almost everything went as expected...except for Leon Goretzka getting the surprise start over João Palhinha. Otherwise, Leroy Sané and Kingsley Coman formed the winger pairing and Raphaël Guerreiro got the nod at right-back over Konrad Laime as Sacha Boey is still not ready. The early going saw Bayern Munich dominate play amid some brief moments of hope for St. Pauli, but it was very evident that the Bavarians were going to overwhelm the home side. For the most part, though, St.Pauli did just enough to keep things condensed and limit Bayern Munich’s shooting lanes. That extreme focus would prove detrimental in some ways, though, as Bayern Munich started to time its runs in order to get behind the St. Pauli backline with relative ease. St. Pauli would have enough of that nonsense and did put together a nice two-to-three minute stretch of possession around the 18th minute where they did give the Bavarians a bit of a headache. You really have to give St. Pauli credit for their commitment to mucking the game, which they were doing really well...until the 22nd minute when one bad break for the homeside led to a Bayern Munich goal. In the midst of the chaos that St. Pauli was creating, a lost possession by Alphonso Davies led to a scrum that saw Goretzka battling for (but ultimately losing) the ball. That brief sequence did, however, give Musiala enough time to strip the ball from the St. Pauli player from behind, turn, and rip off an absolute worldie of a shot that stung the crossbar and dove down into the net. What...a...goal!If you have not seen the play, you really need to. Because of how St. Pauli was playing, it was going to take a goal like that to open the game up a bit...even just a little. It also caused St. Pauli to get just a bit more aggressive as well. Some fans are going to be bitter about this result, but it was not wholly shocking. Once an organized low block is deployed, Bayern Munich’s issues with problem solving become apparent. While Bayern Munich did dominate possession (75%) and ripped off 10 more shots than St Pauli (13 total for the Bavarians), it was a very ho-hum way to dominate, which included some very uneasy moments. In a lot of ways Bayern Munich needs to be better...and more creative with its attack. They have to figure out how to be better against the muddle that St. Pauli made of the game. In short, it is a good time for a break. It should be noted that Joshua Kimmich was really good on the day. Overall, Bayern Munich was not great. Decent? Sure, but not great. There is something to be said for simply just piling up victories, but — sometimes — style points do matter. Bayern Munich had been on a run of battering lower-tier teams from the Bundesliga, but — once again — succumbed to a condensed low block, which suffocated some of the team’s creativity. Those tactics are not going away any time soon, so Kompany will need to find a way to defeat those strategies. And yes, much of that will fall on to the shoulders of the players, who just need to be better in working together. FC St. Pauli 1910 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images The former starter got the nod for Bayern Munich... Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany switched things up in his central midfield when he selected Leon Goretzka to play over João Palhinha. Kompany addressed the matter in his postgame press conference. “It wasn’t an easy situation for Leon in the summer. We saw that he worked hard and he deserved this chance. He has the quality — it wasn’t a difficult decision [to start him today]. It was a logical decision as the team needed fresh legs and we saw that his qualities could help us today. He just has to keep going. We want to have competition in all positions,” Kompany said via @iMiaSanMia. Goretzka turned in a solid (not spectacular) effort in the 1-0 win over St. Pauli on a day where the attack lacked some bit, but the midfield and defense were staunch. Palhinha, who has been good, but not in an overwhelming manner, got a chance to get some rest before heading out to join Portugal for this international break. For the match, Goretzka played 82 minutes, completed 86% of his passes, won two of four ground duels, had one key pass, and lost possession 13 times. Looking for more on the game? FC St. Pauli 1910 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images It took a long range effort for Bayern to get a vital three points away from home. St. Pauli held Bayern Munich to just 6 total shots on target at the Millerntor-Stadion, but it was a wonder strike from Jamal Musiala in the 27th minute that handed the Rekordmeister a 1-0 win away from home, recording yet another clean sheet. Before Musiala’s long range effort bamboozled Nikola Vasilj, Bayern had not recorded a shot on target, as St. Pauli were proving rather difficult to break down with their resolutee defending, physicality, and willingness to rely on the counterattack. To add to that, Vincet Kompany made the decision to start both Leon Goretzka and Leroy Sané, slightly altering the eb and flow to Bayern’s midfield and attack, though neither of the two players played poorly by any stretch of the imagination. To give even more credit to St. Pauli, even midway through the second half before they were forced to start taking more risks to find an equalizer, they were edging Bayern in xG .24 to .13. That statistic also adds to just how beautiful of a strike it was from Musiala, who rarely scores goals from outside the 18-yard box. After the match, he mentioned that long range efforts is something he has been making a point of working on in training, and it certainly paid off against St. Pauli. This comes after a headed goal midweek in the 1-0 Champions League win over Benfica — headers are also a bit of a rarity for Musiala.“Me neither [laughs]. I practiced shooting from distance in training and I’m very happy it’s worked out today. It was my first goal from outside the box this season. I’m always working to improve,” Musiala replied when a reporter said that they didn’t know the youngster had long range efforts in his locker (via @iMiaSanMia). FC St. Pauli 1910 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images It is certainly far more characteristic of Musiala to be weaving his way through congested penalty boxes to created a yard of space for himself to either take a chance and find a teammate, but adding long range goals to his tool kit only goes on to make him that much more dangerous. For an occasion like the one against St. Pauli, sometimes that is going to be what is required to come away with maximum points against sides that will sit in deep blocks and really try to frustrate Bayern’s attack as much as they can. FC St. Pauli 1910 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images It was not the best team performance, but some individuals did stick out... Jersey Swap: Eric SmithThis is a performance from St Pauli that emphasized the collective strength of the team perhaps more than the individual one, but there were a few individuals in their team that managed to stick out. At the heart of St Pauli’s five man defense, Eric Smith marshaled the defense well and acted as firefighter the few times the St Pauli defense was troubled by the Bayern Munich offense, ending with seven clearances and two interceptions to his name.Der Kaiser: Dayot UpamecanoIt is now five matches in a row that Bayern have kept a clean sheet, and it is not the first time that the opposition simply had no shots on goal to speak of. A large and dominant reason for this was Dayot Upamecano, whose brilliance on and off the ball set the stage for Bayern’s victory. His passing security allowed Bayern to keep the ball at the back even when the opposition forwards were itching to get a foot in and launch a counter attack. But when things fell apart up front and a counter attack was launched, Upa was there as well. Winning six of his seven duels on the night, Upamecano was simply a wall that St Pauli could not breach. Jamal Musiala’s goal was important for the win but so was the clean sheet, which Bayern achieved largely thanks to the dominant Frenchman.Der Fußballgott: Jamal MusialaJamal Musiala has become so incredibly important to this team. He was one of Bayern’s lone sparks in this match, repeatedly trying to twist away from his opponents and create the space the Bavarian giants were so desperately looking for. Of course, Musiala’s performance cannot go without a mention to his incredible goal. He showed incredible tenacity and genuine defensive intelligence to win the ball, then he took the ball towards goal with a singular goal in mind: leather the ball at goal. And that he did, curving the ball to confuse the goalkeeper and smashing the ball in off the crossbar. What a goal, what a deserving matchwinner.Der Bomber: Leroy SanéFinally, 10 matchdays into the season, Leroy Sané made his first start in the Bundesliga. His form has been improving over the past few weeks, but what earned Sané this start was the tenacity and drive he showed in this match. Like so many of Bayern’s forwards today, not much of what he tried worked. But unlike the others, Sané kept on plugging away and kept bothering the opposition backline. His runs in behind, his dangerous crosses and especially his daunting shot technique caused St Pauli many worries today.Man of the Match: Joshua KimmichIt was another brilliant performance from Joshua Kimmich. With the absence of Aleksandar Pavlović, Kimmich has had to shoulder a lot more of the creative burden. Fortunately, he is used to such burdens. He dictated build up play all match, dropping between the center backs and ensuring smooth possession for the team when necessary, but speeding up the play when needed as well. This author lost count of the amount of raking diagonals Kimmich played, opening the field up and giving Bayern space to work with in a match seemingly starved of any. He was also at his defensive best today, winning five of his seven duels and stopping multiple possible counter attacks dead in their tracks. It was another brilliant performance heading into the international break by Germany’s captain and Bayern’s number 6.

Viktor Gyökeres has been one of the best strikers in Europe over the past two seasons. He has given new life to Sporting and allowed them to reclaim a spot as the top club in Portugal. Gyökeres has gone a step further and his goals have spanned beyond Portugal where he has scored five goals already in this year’s Champions League campaign. All of Europe’s top clubs have taken notice and Bayern Munich have officially made their enquiry.Despite having Harry Kane, it is clear that Bayern is already contemplating a move for the Swedish striker. How serious they are is yet to be determined but Gyökeres doesn’t need to do much more at this point to solidify his status as an elite striker.Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg delivered this report (as captured by @iMiaSanMia): Bayern have inquired about Viktor Gyökeres and gathered information about the striker, but no further action has been taken yet. Nearly all top European clubs have already made similar inquiries in recent weeks and continue to do so. Bayern will continue to monitor his situation closely. Gyökeres is allowed to leave Sporting next summer for €60-70m.Gyökeres has a long list of clubs keen to sign him, so competition could easily drive up price. It has been reported though that Gyökeres is allowed to leave Sporting next summer for €60-70m. FC Bayern München v 1. FC Union Berlin - Bundesliga Photo by Sebastian Widmann/Getty Images Honestly, it’s refreshing to see Rummenigge say that he watches games back. That is real fan behavior right there. When one compiles a list of Bayern Munich’s most important transfers in the past 15 years, there will be several names such as Arjen Robben, Javi Martinez and Robert Lewandowski on the list. But what might come as a surprise to casual football fans is that a goalkeeper in Manuel Neuer also fully deserves his spot on the list. But why?Former Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge sought to explain this in a recent interview with kicker, stating the following: “He was one of those top transfers, absolutely. I knew that if we brought this goalkeeper to Bayern, we would have ten years of peace in this position. He has now been playing here for 13 years. He has taken goalkeeping and football to a new level. All goalkeepers in the world emulate him,” KHR said with pride, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “Not long ago, I watched the final in Lisbon against Paris St. Germain again, which we would never have won without him - the saves he made in the first half were incredible. Without a doubt. Sometimes you have to remember the great deeds of these players. Manuel helped us win in countless games.”As unbelievable as these achievements are, those are achievements of the past. Bayern will need to consider the present when considering whether or not to renew Manuel Neuer, who will turn 39 before the season is up. Will the club bring the legendary goalkeeper back next season? KHR responds: “I don’t know. But everyone at the club knows how important he is to FC Bayern. I think it’s almost astonishing how he has now returned to the Pep Guardiola style of football. He’s playing it well.”Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s match against St. Pauli this weekend?
