FC Bayern München v SL Benfica - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD4 Photo by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images via Getty Images When will someone decide to go toe-to-toe with Bayern Munich? Bayern Munich grinded out a 1-0 victory over Benfica in the Champions League, but it was not easy. Playing against Benfica’s stingy low block, Bayern Munich had a lot of possession and chances, just not high-percentage opportunities. The plan was put in place by Benfica boss Bruno Lage, who lamented his team’s inability to make good on the few chances it had. “When Bayern play at home they usually have a lot of possession. We knew we would have to defend. Our plan was to try and create something with the ball. We wanted to have more control and could have done better in transition a few times,” Lage said (via FCBayern.com). Former Heidenheim player Jan-Niklas Beste could feel the pressure that Benfica was absorbing and admitted that damn was eventually going to burst. “If you’re playing with such a tight block against Bayern for such a long time, I think it’s only a matter of time before Bayern score a goal. Obviously, the goal was great. It was a great cross to the far post and went back into the centre. It’s difficult to defend that. The things we wanted to do in transition didn’t work for us today. You’re fairly alone up front against three or four players, and that obviously makes it extremely difficult.”Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s 1-0 win over Benfica in the Champions League? 1. FSV Mainz 05 v FC Bayern München - DFB Cup: Round Two Photo by Ralf Ibing - firo sportphoto/Getty Images Bayern Munich took down Benfica 1-0... Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl praise the team’s intensity and center-backs after the club’s 1-0 victory over Benfica in the Champions League. For Eberl, it was a “must win” game.“Those were three important points. We needed them today. It was a complicated game. Benfica didn’t want to play football with us. They only wanted to defend and they did that with great structure. However, we kept the pressure on. Once more we didn’t give any chances away, and we were rewarded. 1-0 wins are the best ones. We never said we don’t learn from mistakes and past games,” said Eberl (via FCBayern.com). “On the contrary, we observe everything with great scrutiny. You simply can’t show this incredible intensity every three days. However, the game control and the dominance we’re consistently showing with two central defenders in outstanding form in the past days and weeks, that really is very good.”Eberl has been overtly positive after just about every Bayern Munich game — and most of the time, his pragmatic feelings have been on-point. Still, the Bavarians have more dangerous tests on the horizon and the team will get a chance to prove that Eberl’s belief has been warranted. FC Bayern Munchen v SL Benfica - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD4 Photo by Sebastian Frej/MB Media/Getty Images A battle for playing time is upon us at Bayern Munich... One of the most ferocious positional battles at Bayern Munich is at right-wing where incumbent Leroy Sané and newcomer Michael Olise are vying for time. During Bayern Munich’s 1-0 victory over Benfica in the Champions League, Sané, who surprisingly did not start, came on for Olise (who was okay) and made an instant impact. Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany understands that he has access to a wealth of talent at both wing positions. “We’re happy to have a lot of quality in the position with Leroy, Michael, King and Serge. We want to use everyone. Leroy changed the game today. They all scored goals and contributed well this season so far. Leroy did very well after he was subbed on today,” Kompany said (via @iMiaSanMia). That foursome will be competing hardcore for playing time, but it does give Kompany the opportunity to use a rotation, which could make all four players better for the long run of this arduous season. Bayern Munich v Benfica - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD4 Photo by Ulrik Pedersen/NurPhoto via Getty Images Fortune favors the bold. That’s also saying Benfica should’ve scored then Whenever Bayern Munich plays against teams who play a low-block or defend deep, that’s already made Bayern’s day worse. Against Benfica, the Bavarians persevered and got their much-needed breakthrough. Konrad Laimer, who alternated between positions down the right-hand side, believed that his side did well to get around the club’s kryptonite“It’s always tough to play against an opponent that sits deep”, Laimer said (DAZN via @iMiaSanMia). “You have to be patient. I think we did well as we kept trying and played our football. We could probably have done more in the attacking third. It was important to win today. I thought we dominated the game and deservedly won”.Bayern were at times lacking in some areas and was close to conceding a goal numerous times from Benfica’s counterattacks, but a solid performance from the back line—particularly Kim Min-jae—ensured that Bayern got all three points.

FC Bayern München v SL Benfica - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD4 Photo by Stefan Matzke - sampics/Getty Images The Portuguese midfielder had an alright game against his former club. Former Bayern Munich midfielder Renato Sanches had a homecoming of sorts in his return to the Allianz Arena on Wednesday. The Bavarians were gearing up for a Champions League tilt against SL Benfica — and this time, Sanches was on the other side. The 26-year-old had gotten his start in Benfica before arriving at Bayern at a young age. But after failing to secure a spot in the Bayern rotation, he moved on — to Lille, Paris Saint-Germain, AS Roma, and finally back at his boyhood club in Portugal.“[It] was nice to be back in Munich,” Sanches said after the game in comments captured via @iMiaSanMia. “This was my home for two seasons, it’s a very nice club, very nice teammates. Back then they welcomed me when I was 19 years old. I really appreciate everything here and it really is a great club.”Playing on the right side of a three-man midfield in Bruno Lage’s 5-3-2 setup, Sanches put in some hearty challenges to limit Bayern’s scoring opportunities. But the Bavarians ultimately prevailed in a tight 1-0 victory.“Of course, we had hoped for a different result. We could have done better in attack, and that’s something we need to work on as a team in the upcoming weeks. We can learn a lot from this game and we have to show that in the next matches. Then, we’ll see a better Benfica,” Sanches added (as captured by FCBayern.com)

FBL-EUR-C1-BAYERN MUNICH-BENFICA Photo by TOBIAS SCHWARZ/AFP via Getty Images While he would have like more goals, Kompany liked the level of control Bayern showed thorughout proceedings. They made hard work of it, but Bayern Munich secured a desperately-needed win in the Champions League by virtue of a 1-0 victory over SL Benfica at the Allianz Arena. The kickoff being delayed by 15 minutes due to Munich public transport issues underlined the pressure that was on the Rekordmeister to get a result and turn their fortunes around in the competition after two consecutive losses against the likes off Aston Villa and Barcelona. Jamal Musiala’s goal in the 67th minute of play secured the three points for Vincent Kompany’s side after having a level of control for most of the match, perhaps feeling a bit hard done not to have won the match by more than just one goal. The result took Bayern up to 17th in the Champions League table in a playoff spot for the knockout stages with 4 more matches to go.On the overall balance, Bayern dominated Benfica on the night and quite arguably should have scored more than once in either half. They recorded a total of 10 shots on target to Benfica’s 0 and had the lion’s share of possession with a numerical total of 74%, completing 872 passes to Benfica’s 314. Bruno Lage’s side perhaps came to Munich knowing they would be digging in the trenches and defending for most of the night, but Bayern did good enough to prevent them from getting too many chances on the counterattack, which has often times been their undoing. After the match, Kompany expressed his delight at having earned a needed three points, adding that he did not mind too much that his side only won 1-0. “Sometimes it’s good to win like this (1-0), even though of course we always prefer to win by 3,4 or 5 goals. I thought we controlled the game very well. Sometimes the final pass doesn’t always work. We didn’t score an early goal, so we knew we had to stay calm and patient. We did that well. It was a good Champions League game and a good win,” he told DAZN Germany after the final whistle (via @iMiaSanMia). With the Benfica result, it is now four wins on the bounce ever since Bayern’s 4-1 defeat at the hands of Barcelona in the Catalans’ home towards the end of last month. Additionally, it is also Bayern’s and Manuel Neuer’s 4th clean sheet in a row, adding on to the 5-0 win over VfL Bochum, the 4-0 win over Mainz, and the 3-0 win over Union Berlin. FC Bayern München v SL Benfica - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD4 Photo by Stefan Matzke - sampics/Getty Images For Kompany, he will certainly be pleased with not having conceded a goal from their last 4 matches, but this is not something he ever felt his side was not capable of achieving. “There’s no particular secret for that. Since the game against Tottenham in pre-season, I felt that the boys are capable of that. Now we have to stay calm, we did well so far but we can always do better. There are always some adjustments. I have confidence in my players. And we also have a few other good defenders who are unavailable at the moment,” he explained in the post-match press conference (via @iMiaSanMia).

RT @FCBayern: FC Bayern in Trauer: Todesfall überschattet 1:0 gegen Lissabon.

FC Bayern München v SL Benfica - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD4 Photo by Stefan Matzke - sampics/Getty Images Get your noggin’ on that, eh? Bayern Munich tried and tried to get in behind Benfica’s defense and had a torrid time of doing it until Leroy Sané and Harry Kane worked together to let in Jamal Musiala to head in the winning goal. The 21-year-old has now scored three headed goals in his last five games for Bayern, something that hasn’t registered to him yet.“I don’t know what’s happening with my head at the moment”, Musiala quipped (DAZN via @iMiaSanMia). I’m just trying to get in good positions in the box. That’s worked well recently. Hopefully there will be more goals”.It has worked well, well enough that it has earned him the Man of the Match award. If this game ended in a draw, Kim Min-jae would be the touted recipient of the award. Fortunately for the Bavarians, their patience was rewarded and got another win after two Champions League losses on the bounce.Man of the match pic.twitter.com/intchYMlL3— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) November 6, 2024

FC Bayern Munich Training Session Photo by F. Noever/FC Bayern via Getty Images A fourth consecutive clean sheet is a serious accomplishment. Though Bayern Munich were not able to produce fireworks in the Champions League clash against SL Benfica, the team nevertheless came away with three incredibly important points. Key to this victory was the defense. As the offense struggled, the defense only conceded a single shot en route to a fourth consecutive clean sheet. Speaking after the match, João Palhinha glowed in pride not just because of the important victory, but because the defensive midfielder and his co-workers had done their job:“It was a special game for me as a Portuguese player. We gave away very few chances and controlled the entire game,” Palhinha said, via FCBayern.com. “Today, our work was rewarded. We knew we had to win.”Another important contributor to the victory was Dayot Upamecano. Despite only recently returning from an injury, the Frenchman not only completed a second 90-minute match in four days but impressed the entire match, his presence as big and ever-present as his smile during his post match interview: “We’re happy with our performance. We defended very well. We are a team. Everyone wants to keep a clean sheet together, everyone wants to win together. This is how we have to keep going.”It was Bayern’s humiliating 4-1 loss to FC Barcelona that has kickstarted this renewed effort to defend better. The lessons from that difficult day have been absorbed and have lead to success in the next four matches. How long can this clean sheet streak keep going? FC Bayern München v SL Benfica - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD4 Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images He was never worried. Harry Kane was never worried.Bayern Munich took a while to get the break through, but eventually it did in Wednesday’s tight Champions League win over Portuguese club SL Benfica. Kane played his part with an assist across the face of goal for teammate Jamal Musiala, after a brilliant cross by Leroy Sané — and while that would be the game’s only score, Kane felt there could have been even more.“We were completely dominant for pretty much the whole game. They didn’t cause us many problems at all,” Kane said after the game in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “It’s really good to get the win for sure. We just lacked a little bit of composure in the final third to get the second or third goal. We’re playing a lot of games in a short space of time so to dominate the way we did is really pleasing.“Sometimes we have fireworks and it’s 4-0, 5-0 and in other games you have to find a way. The ball just didn’t quite fall for us. Luckily for us, Jamal got the goal at the right time and then even from there we dominated and looked like the team that would get the next goal. We stayed calm, didn’t panic too much and ultimately it’s three points and they are important for us after the start we had.”The win moves Bayern up in the Champions League table after two straight losses. FC Bayern Munchen v SL Benfica - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD4 Photo by Sebastian Frej/MB Media/Getty Images This one was critical in the Bayern win. Is the youngster becoming an aerial sensation? Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala heading home a goal into the back of the net is getting to be a regular sight these days. The 21-year-old always regards it as a rare event, celebrating with a broad grin and a few cheeky taps on his own head. But that makes three just this season — and it is only November. At this point, is it really luck?“He’s getting in the right areas and that’s what happens, you know, the ball sometimes falls your way,” said teammate and striker Harry Kane, who supplied the assist (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “It’s all of the hard work he does. You can work on it, work on being in the area and getting the goals that make the difference. I’m really pleased for him and hopefully he can keep it up.”pic.twitter.com/p8GCesuzZ3— ّ (@ecublue) November 6, 2024Head coach Vincent Kompany concurred.“It doesn’t matter whether you score with your head, knee or [chest],” Kompany stated in his own post-match remarks. “You have to be at the right time for one contact. He sees in training how Thomas Müller and Harry Kane act inside the box. I hope he’ll carry on this way.”After all, why not? Musiala has some excellent examples to learn from around him.

Let’s discuss. The attacking group remained exactly the same from the initial call sheet, but we did see some movement in the midfielder group. Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Brandt is was included in the mix, as was his teammate Felix Nmecha. With Bayern Munich’s Aleksandar Pavlović out with an injury, a spot opened up. Borussia Dortmund’s Waldemar Anton is battling a thigh injury and RB Leipzig’s David Raum also hurt (ankle injury) did not receive the call, which opened up a spot for Robin Gosens, who ultimately joined the October call-ups as a late call up to help Nagelsmann deal with injuries. Manchester City’s Stetan Ortega received the call over Red Bull Salzburg’s Janis Blaswich during this round as well. We also know that Bayern Munich loanee Paul Wanner, who is at Heidenheim, rejected an offer from Nagelsmann in favor of staying with Germany’s U-21 team as it prepares for the EUROs this summer. Wanner is also still unsure if he wants to play for Germany or Austria, where he would likely have a more clear path to make an impact. It should also be noted that VfB Stuttgart’s Jamie Leweling, who emerged as a breakout star during the last international break after being a late call-up, was also not called up due to injury. According to a report from Sport Bild journalists Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega will receive his first call-up from German national team coach Julian Nagelsmann: Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega will be called up by Julian Nagelsmann for the first time for Germany’s upcoming Nations League games this month. The goalkeeper position is in a state of flux for Germany. Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer retired, FC Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen suffered a long-term injury, and Nagelsmann is looking for someone to hold down the fort. Bernd Leno rejected a chance to join Germany during the last international break, so Alexander Nübel and Oliver Baumann have been tasked with trying to provide cover. FC Bayern München v SL Benfica - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD4 Photo by Stefan Matzke - sampics/Getty Images At least this kind of voting will remain a consequence-free game. Bayern Munich shut out SL Benfica in a 1-0 Champions League victory on Wednesday.Jamal Musiala scored with his head yet again in what is becoming more pattern than aberration after a delightful combination from Leroy Sané to Harry Kane. It was not easy for Vincent Kompany’s men, who slogged through the match with maximum possession but few openings to exploit. In the end, they did enough to keep Benfica from catching them successfully on the break, and nabbed the one goal to send them shooting back up the UCL table.
