Union Berlin coach Bo Svensson was not totally deflated after his team lost 3-0 to Bayern Munich, but he was not overly thrilled, either. “Congratulations to FC Bayern for their well-deserved win. I’m happy with the first half. We didn’t concede much, which sounds strange when the score is 2-0. But you need the game to run smoothly to get something out of it. We then committed an unnecessary foul when we conceded the first goal and the second goal was simply world class. It was difficult in the second half. My team gave it their all, I can’t blame them,” said Union Berlin coach Bo Svensson (as captured by FCBayern.com). After being dominated for 90 minutes, Union Berlin captain Christopher Trimmel was resigned to the fact that his squad just is not at the same level as Bayern Munich. “The bottom line is that we can live with it because Bayern are the favorites, have incredible quality and that’s just how it happens. It takes a perfect day. A bit of luck at the back and you have to be ice-cold up front. I’ve personally managed that once before, but this is an exception. In the end, you can only congratulate Bayern. Die Folgen: Bayern’s 3-0 win over Union Berlin (Bavarian Football Works)In a matchup that was supposed to pit the Bundesliga’s premier attack vs. the stingiest defense, Bayern Munich pounded Union Berlin into submission for a 3-0 victory. It was yet another impressive blowout of an inferior side for the Bavarians, but fans are already looking toward Wednesday when the Bavarians will take on Benfica in the Champions League. Another litmus test awaits, but — in the meantime — let’s talk about Bayern Munich’s convincing win over Union Berlin. Here are some quick hitters on the match: As always, let’s begin with the starting lineup: #FCBFCU #MiaSanMia #FCBayern pic.twitter.com/Z5g1A3Xhye— FC Bayern (@FCBayernEN) November 2, 2024I think I’m beginning to get a bead on Vincent Kompany’s thought process. It is starting to become clear that he prefers certain combinations with his wingers and that he is completely undecided about his right-backs at the moment. Either way, this lineup sets the stage for who will start Wednesday against Benfica in the Champions League. If anything, Raphaël Guerreiro, Michael Olise, and Kingsley Coman all helped themselves with their efforts during the match.As expected, Union Berlin was intent on making the game a grind (as they should have). Bayern Munich dominated possession early, but there was a true sense of urgency in defending for Die Eisernen. Eventually, though, Bayern Munich would find a way to slither through the low block. Michael Olise drew a foul just inside the box and Harry Kane powered the PK attempt into the corner for a 1-0 lead. That goal broke Union Berlin’s resolve and you could almost feel the Bavarians take over complete control of the match. After Bayern Munich scored, it was almost as if Union Berlin knew it had no chance. Kane was not done with that PK, though, as he set up Kingsley Coman to make it 2-0 in the 43rd minute. Guerreiro got the scoring going in the second half when he sent in a ball from the right side that found Coman on the far post, who headed a ball across the box to Kane, who volleyed it into the net for what would be an insurmountable 3-0 lead for the Bavarians. A subplot to the goal was Jamal Musiala almost snaking it from Kane as he ran into Coman’s header. The duo surely had a laugh over it after Kane was awarded the goal. It is not anything worth being considered as alarming, but it does feel like Joshua Kimmich and João Palhinha are working on their chemistry in the center of the park. Both had fine individual games, but they will need to be more connected moving forward. Regardless, Union Berlin had no answers offensively. Once Union Berlin defensive wall was breached, there was no coming back for Die Eisernen.Interestingly, as more stories leak about Bayern Munich waiting to get rid of Leon Goretzka, the more Vincent Kompany keeps playing him. Goretzka, Eric Dier, and Leroy Sané all entered the match in the 69th minute. In the 80th minute, Adam Aznou checked in to make his Bundesliga debut. The post-Alphonso Davies contingency planning might be underway. Speaking of Davies, the backline — as a whole — was very solid...unchallenged...but very solid. We know that Bayern Munich’s defenders can physically impose their will on weaker opponents, but now they had to work as a unit to try and do the same against the better teams that they will face. That said, great effort nonetheless for the defenders. Overall, Bayern Munich dominated from the outset and Union Berlin was just not strong enough or disciplined enough defensively to hold off Kane and the rest of the attackers from Die Roten. As it should have, Bayern Munich easily put away a team that is not quite ready for primetime. How will that translate to Wednesday in the UCL? It is only a few more days until we find out. After 9 games, Bayern Munich had an impressive 23 points at a rate of 2.56 points per game and a goal differential of plus 27. It was impressive stuff...or was it? That was Bayern’s balance last season under Thomas Tuchel. This season, Bayern has 23 points from 9 games with a goal differential of plus 25. The numbers are eerily similar to the season in which Bayern went trophyless. Is this a sign that Bayern need to tread carefully in the upcoming weeks and months?Perhaps, but there are also many reasons to believe that this success will be maintained. Speaking after Bayern’s 3-0 victory over Union Berlin, star striker Harry Kane gushed in delight about head coach Vincent Kompany’s playstyle:“It’s fantastic. Every game we dominate, not only with the ball but also without the ball with our pressing,” Kane explained, via @iMiaSanMia. “We managed to keep another clean sheet today which is great. Everyone is hungry. There’s still a long way to go, but if we keep going like this we’ll be okay.”For all the early brilliance of the results under Tuchel, the reaction to his playstyle was perhaps less outwardly enthusiastic from the player. Certainly, nobody echoed this kind of complete belief in the style of the future England manager like former Tottenham Hotspur striker Kane did. Bayern Munich continues to be unburdened by what has recently been with a 3-0 Bundesliga victory over FC Union Berlin. It’s the latest in a string of lopsided victories for the Bavarians, who are fast flushing away memories of an ugly 4-1 Champions League loss at FC Barcelona on October 23rd with clean sheet after clean sheet.BOO! Svensson was not enough to spoil Bayern’s streak this time. The Union coach, who beat Bayern thrice in less than three full seasons at Mainz, had his side playing another disciplined game against the Rekordmeister, compacting space and frustrating the Bayern attack while occasionally threatening with long balls in behind. However, Bayern’s individual quality shone throughout. Michael Olise won an early penalty, neatly converted by Harry Kane; Alphonso Davies turned and burned his way down the flanks to supply Kane, who flicked on for Kingsley Coman for the second; then Olise’s well-placed cross found Coman, who headed across for Kane for the third. By then, the Union resistance was broken, and while they remained compact at the back there was little realistic hope of a comeback. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany’s subs allowed for more game time for a number of squad players, from legendary veteran Thomas Müller to out-of-favor Leon Goretzka. It had been so agonizingly long since Harry Kane had scored more than one goal in a match for Bayern Munich. Well, it was three matches. Regardless, the former Tottenham Hotspur striker was able to break this “barren” spell with two goals and an assist against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga, leading his team to what would ultimately be a comfortable 3-0 victory over a team that had started the Matchday 5th in the Bundesliga.Kane was suitably happy about how simple made a victory over a robust and dangerous Union Berlin seem, glowing about the fine nature of the Bavarians’ performance:“It was a really good performance from us,” Kane stated via @iMiaSanMia. “It wasn’t easy but it was a home game and people expect us to win here. Union started well. We knew it would be tough, they defend well and are good on the counters. But overall it was a strong performance.”This strong performance sees Bayern retain their place at the top of the Bundesliga, while Kane goes 1 goal clear ahead of Omar Marmoush for the race for the Bundesliga Torjägerkanone, or top scorer award. Bayern Munich finishes another matchday atop the Bundesliga after recording a strong 3-0 win over Union Berlin thanks to a brace from Harry Kane and a goal from Kingsley Coman. Here are some observations from the game.Build-up from the backBayern’s buildup from the back was particularly impressive this game. In the first half, Bayern opted for a more direct approach to attack utilizing Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae's passing prowess to push the ball forward. Upamecano in particular did extremely well in making accurate and well-placed long passes, helping Bayern start quick attacks which bypassed the midfield. It was an interesting approach that clearly worked well because both defenders maintained their line while contributing greatly to the attack. It also allowed for a more fluid attack and seemed to work generally in Bayern’s favor. More of this, please!The attack was in full flowGenerally solid wing play all around — Kingsley Coman had a decent game picking up two goal contributions and was complimented incredibly well by Alphonso Davies, who had yet another great showing (this time on his birthday). Micheal Olise was explosive and won a penalty and Harry Kane finally seemed to get into the right spots while attacking and even indulged in effective chance creation. Jamal Musiala had some great moves, as he usually does, which meant that the attack worked as intended. If there is anything to criticize, it was still sometimes hesitant and didn't always feature the right decisions in the final third, and was helped by the general chaos in the game, but this was a step in the right direction. More to build on for Kompany.Improvement.In every sense of the word, Bayern Munich seems to improve with every passing game. Today fans bore witness to a more balanced approach in the first half while key players whose contracts expire soon such as Alphonso Davies and Joshua Kimmich are on an upward trend. Wins like these always feel nice, but Bayern will have to win in such fashion against bigger teams to truly convince fans that the improvement is real.Bayern face Benfica in the Champions League midweek. Leon Goretzka - who was often criticised by former Bayern Munich manager, Thomas Tuchel, throughout last season - has had a torrid start to life in Vincent Kompany’s side. The 29-year-old midfielder has only mustered 7 appearances across all competitions, all of which coming from the bench, for a total of 119 minutes of playing time. For a player of Goretzka’s calibre, that is far from ideal.Sadly for Scoretzka, as dubbed by Thomas Müller, the situation isn’t likely to get any better as Bayern desire to cut ties with him (as captured by @iMiaSanMia):Bayern are still interested in offloading Leon Goretzka as quickly as possible. The player, meanwhile, has ruled out a January transfer. He wants to reassess his situation in the summer. Goretzka earns up to €17m/year including bonuses. His base salary is worth around €13m - and increases with every seventh competitive gameThere is certainly still a player in Goretzka, so it may come as a surprise to many to see him rotting away on the bench. However, whatever player the German midfielder is, is not what Kompany is looking for.Considering Goretzka’s interesting wage structure, one can understand why Bayern are looking to wash their hands of his contract. Even though Goretzka has played only 119 minutes for Bayern this season, he has made seven competitive appearances. Happy days for the player but a sad day for the clubs wallet, especially considering the midfielder’s reduced importance. It is slightly puzzling that Goretzka hasn’t been more vocal about his loss of significance at Bayern. Is he fighting for a position in Kompany’s side or is he enjoying every last bit of his lucrative contract? Either way, one has to feel for Goretzka. Once a keystone player in Bayern’s midfield to a player snubbed successively by the likes of Thomas Tuchel, Julian Nagelsmann and now Vincent Kompany; it truly is a tough situation for the Bochum-born man. Ever since the 4-1 loss to Barcelona in the Champions League, Bayern Munich have bee flawless. Since that night last month, they have gone on two win three matches on the bounce across all competitions. They beat VfL Bochum 5-0 in the Bundesliga, Mainz 4-0 in the DFB-Pokal, and most recently, they routed Union Berlin 3-0 in the Bundesliga, led by a brace from Harry Kane. FC Bayern München v 1. FC Union Berlin - Bundesliga Photo by Sebastian Widmann/Getty Images On paper, the East Berlin outfit, Bochum, and Mainz are not as comparable to a side like Hansi Flick’s high-firing Barcelona side, but there are still no guarantees in any competition and Vincent Kompany has got his men firing on all cylinders at the moment. They are still at the top of the Bundesliga table and through to the third round of the DFB-Pokal, but they are in need of changing their fortunes around in the Champions League. After losses to Barcelona and Aston Villa from two of their first three matches in the competition, Bayern currently reside in the 23rd spot in the Champions League table with the new format and are in desperate need of a win. Their next test in the competition lies in the form of playing host to SL Benfica midweek — a test that Kompany said he is putting all of the pressure aside for. For the Belgian boss, every Bayern match comes with its own form and level or pressure, so the Benfica test will be no different from that sentiment.“There’s always pressure every game at Bayern. My focus is on the game, not on the pressure around it. As a coach, my goal is to try to win every game. It’s a must-win game in the sense that we want to win every game. But with the new format, it’s not a decisive game for the Champions League. There’s pressure to get into the top 8, but [Wednesday’s game] is not about advancing or being eliminated from the Champions League. In any case, our focus is on always winning,” Kompany explained (via @iMiaSanMia).While the new format does afford Bayern plenty of time to climb their way up the table to get into automatic qualification for the knockout stages, it would certainly make their lives easier to go into the final phase of first round matches with some breathing room. Bayern Munich played out a comfortable 3-0 win over Union Berlin, ensuring it will remain at the top of the table following the conclusion of matchday nine. Bayern’s dominance gave head coach Vincent Kompany the perfect opportunity to test youngster Adam Aznou in his first Bundesliga match.The former La Masia player came on in the eightieth minute in a like-for-like swap with left-back Alphonso Davies, and while not enough time to make a significant mark on the game, getting minutes on the pitch is the most important thing for Aznou at this stage.After the match, Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl was captured (via @iMiaSanMia) speaking about the 18-year-old’s debut, saying, “He has incredible potential and that’s why we’re happy that he’s now made it to the professional level. Bayern Munich star Thomas Müller was pleased with what he saw as his team battered Union 3-0 in the Bundesliga. “If we analyze it in detail, there were certainly a few situations today, especially in the first half, where we were a bit lucky. But the path we are taking at the moment is not only producing a great style of play, but also results. We are dominant and we’re allowing very few shots, especially when you compare that to the past few years. We have now won three games with clean sheets against teams that are themselves more defensively oriented,” said Müller (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Accordingly, it’s of course different to playing against Barcelona or against Frankfurt. But it’s still the case that we actually have a lot of control with our style of play and the opponent has few promising scoring chances. The quality is great.”What Müller says is true, there is a difference between dominating Union Berlin and facing off with the likes of FC Barcelona or even Eintracht Frankfurt. Bayern Munich got another leg up in this year’s Bundesliga title race, courtesy of perennial rivals Borussia Dortmund.The Bavarians are seeking to reclaim top spot in the German top flight after being knocked off its eleven-year perch last season by Bayer Leverkusen. Entering Saturday, Bayern was level on points with RB Leipzig — but BVB secured a come-from-behind home victory to send Die Roten Bullen tumbling down to second.Leipzig is having a roaring start to 2024/25 so far, and striker Benjamin Šeško helped his side draw first blood in the 27th minute, collecting a clever backheel from Loïs Openda inside the box to leave Dortmund keeper Alexander Meyer with no chance.But Dortmund struck back right away through Maximilian Beier, in the starting lineup for just the third time in the league this season. The 22-year-old German international featured in Julian Nagelsmann’s EURO 2024 call-ups but has been out of the team lately — perhaps goals like this, well taken off the turn in the scramble after a set piece, will catch the national team manager’s eye.Beier helped complete the comeback in the second half, supplying the cross for another Bundesliga comeback kid: Serhou Guirassy. Both Beier and Guirassy had soaring seasons for different teams in 2023/24, and both have been finding their feet since moving to Dortmund. Now they have completed a terrific comeback that may have title implications...although perhaps not for themselves.The Black and Yellows remained in the ascendancy for the balance of the game, but both sides took their chances to change the narrow scoreline. It has been coming for some time now. Against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga, Adam Aznou was finally handed his debut for Bayern Munich. After impressing in pre-season, captaining Bayern’s U-19s in the UEFA Youth league, and making his debut for the Morocco national team (even winning the MOTM award to boot), one can say that it was coming.But Aznou’s work is far from over. When asked about the former FC Barcelona youth player, head coach Vincent Kompany praised the youngster but warned him to keep going. “I’ve always said we’re very happy with the young players we have in the team. Adam has done well in training and also with the national team. He can be proud, his parents can be proud and happy,” Kompany said in comments captured via @iMiaSanMia. “Now he has to keep working. There’s still a lot of work to do.”Kompany knows that reaching for Aznou, his debut for Bayern cannot be the apex. The youngster will need to keep recommending himself to make the necessary progress. Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany knew that Union Berlin’s team defense was going to be a struggle to deal with for his attacking group. However, Bayern Munich’s relentless style of play was able to overwhelm Union Berlin on the way to a 3-0 victory. For Kompany, the match was never really all that comfortable, even if many observers felt that the Bavarians were dominant. “Union were really solid defensively in the first half. I was a bit concerned that maybe we weren’t realizing how dangerous the game was in the first half. The team worked very hard in the first and second half, so that always helps you if you have a good team. I was really happy with the performance in the second half because we did very well. It was a tough game and I’m happy with the result,” Kompany said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). Bayern Munich was dominant in every aspect of the match and always had the match firmly in hand. For the third consecutive Bundesliga match, Bayern Munich overwhelmed the opponent for 90 minutes and cruised to victory over Union Berlin. Michael Olise drew an earn penalty kick with some shifty footwork, then Harry Kane and Kingsley Coman swapped assists to put the game out of reach. Bayern completed 863 passes, held 78% possession, and only allowed one shot to hit Manuel Neuer’s bored hands. Bayern will return to their home stadium on Wednesday for a Champions League clash against Portuguese’s most popular club, Benfica.Jersey Swap: Jeong Woo-YeongThe former Bayern product was the only Union Berlin player who created an ounce of creativity on Bayern’s side of the field. Unfortunately, Jeong’s teammates were unable to do anything with those opportunities. The second best defense in the Bundesliga (third, now) couldn’t withstand the overwhelming discrepancy in possession and talent.Der Kaiser: Dayot UpamecanoUpamecano policed the back line with an assertive physicality that prevented any real opportunities from Union Berlin. Even when he didn’t win a particular challenge, the end result was the ball moving out of a dangerous position.In the first 15 minutes, Bayern’s attack was moving at half speed but Upamecano’s steady presence in the back allowed the offense to stick to its game plan and Bayern was ultimately rewarded with a breakthrough on a foolish challenge in the box.Fußballgott: Alphonso DaviesDavies didn’t spend a lot of time at left back, often flying past Kingsley Coman or defending from a more centralized position. In the 43rd minute, Davies earned a hockey assist with a crisp ball to Harry Kane. Davies is playing with incredible confidence, delivering his best performances since the Julian Nagelsmann era.Der Bomber: Kingsley ComanFor the second game in a row, Coman earned the start and rewarded the manager’s choice with another goal. In the 51st minute, Coman repaid Kane with an unselfish assist that ended with an unchallenged tap in for Kane. The unmatched pace from the Coman-Davies left wing duo is becoming a major problem again for the rest of the Bundesliga.Meister of the Match: Harry KaneFor the first time this season, Kane is alone atop the Golden Boot leaderboard. Today’s brace makes it 11 goals in nine Bundesliga matches, putting him on pace to break Lewandowski’s single season record.In the early stages of the match, Kane rigidly sat high against the Union Berlin backline but couldn’t connect on any crosses. After his penalty kick in the 15th minute, Kane started dropping deeper to receive the ball and redistribute to the other attackers. According to Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich has an odd guest this week in the offices at Säbener Straße — Thomas Tuchel’s former assistant coach (with a focus on setpieces), Anthony Barry. Maybe he forgot something in his old office? After two big wins in a row, Bayern Munich look pretty good right now. To keep that momentum going, Vincent Kompany will want to secure a win in front of home fans vs 4th placed Union Berlin. Union have had a surprisingly good season so far, but they did just get knocked out of the DFB Pokal by a 3rd division Arminia Bielefeld. Their coach, Bo Svensson, had made a habit of beating Bayern during his time at Mainz. Bayern Munich, meanwhile, still have a bit of an injury crisis going on. Hiroki Ito is still injured, while Dayot Upamecano and Eric Dier are both doubtful for the game. It’s getting almost getting to the point where Leon Goretzka may have to step in and start at center-back. Still, it’s hard to complain right now. It’s Bayern time.
