Joshua Kimmich has been a marathon man for Bayern Munich this season, playing every single minute of each game. After being named as the new captain for Germany in September, Kimmich has been a stalwart force in the midfield for both club and country.Last season, Kimmich played the least amount of minutes in his career since the 2016/17 campaign when he was stuck behind Philipp Lahm. This season, Kimmich looks reinvigorated as a leader and distributor.“Joshua plays every minute because he deserves it, not because of his name,” said Kompany (via @iMiaSanMia). “He works hard in training as well as in the games. Ahead of Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga match this weekend vs. Union Berlin, head coach Vincent Kompany was asked about the type of challenge that the defensively-focused (but offensively-challenged) team would provide to the Bavarians. “I have no control over the opponent. I know they have done well so far. They are up there and we are not underestimating them. But the game is about us. The joy of playing the game has to come from us. Hopefully our strength will be the difference tomorrow. You can see that they are very strong in defence and on the counter. This is a team that knows what it has to do. But in the end it’s a game at home, that’s the priority,” said Upamecano (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We stay calm, we can see that the team is getting better and can get even better. That’s our focus. Union have the second-best defense in the league. Maybe we need to step up a gear to score goals tomorrow. We want to give it everything we’ve got and hopefully pick up a win.”As always, Kompany will have some key lineup decisions to make — particularly at wing where he has Leroy Sané, Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman, and Mathys Tel among others to choose form. “It’s not difficult. It’s important that we have everyone available at the moment. You can only play with two wingers. So far, all four players have done well and are at about the same level. There’s not much difference [in the level], but a bit in the profiles,” said Kompany. One other area of the team that Kompany is focused on is center-back where Dayot Upamecano and Eric Dier have both beenbanged up. “It’s a pity when players are unavailable. We have 18 fit players, so I have 18 options for the position. There have obviously been a lot of games in the last few weeks. I have full confidence in the other boys and in the squad. Eric Dier and Dayot Upamecano are not the only players missing in this position. But we don’t want to look for excuses,” Kompany said. “The tendency looks positive for both of them. Nevertheless, I will give myself until tomorrow to make a decision. Leon Goretzka also did very well against Mainz. We have a lot of players who are very flexible. I hope everyone is fit. But I also have confidence in the other guys.”Finally, Kompany was asked about the team training for situations where a scrum in front of the net could result in a goal scoring opportunity. Kompany indicated that it is, indeed, a focus for him. “You constantly repeat the movement patterns. We also have good examples here like Thomas Müller and Harry Kane. After doing the unthinkable and actually progressing past the 2nd round of the DFB-Pokal, Bayern Munich look to keep the good vibes going by beating Union Berlin. Given that RB Leipzig face Borussia Dortmund this matchday, you just know that all three points will be necessary for Bayern to keep their spot as the undisputed #1 team in the table. Let’s see what Vincent Kompany has to work with. Team newsHiroki Ito (foot), Sacha Boey (thigh), Josip Stanišić (thigh), and Aleksandar Pavlović (collarbone) are all completely ruled out for the game, while Dayot Upamecano and Eric Dier are both doubtful with thigh injuries. The situation with the backline is really precarious right now, though at least the team has some options to plug in the holes. Assuming that Kompany isn’t planning on changing too much about the lineup, we can expect the following starting XI: Media Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala need no explanation, while Michael Olise got some rest in midweek which makes him eligible to start. Kingsley Coman also got rested during the game against Mainz, which gives him a good chance of starting given Kompany’s rotation policy at the moment. The midfield and backline pretty much selects itself, though Leon Goretzka could slot in if Dayot Upamecano is unable to start. According to a report from CaughtOffside, there are plenty of top-tier clubs just waiting to talk to Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala. While the youngster implied that he might be ready to ink a contract extension with Bayern Munich, it will not stop Manchester City, Real Madrid, Liverpool FC, and Chelsea FC from kicking the tires on trying to convince the Germany international to jump ship: Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea are among the clubs monitoring the situation of Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala as he approaches the final year of his contract.CaughtOffside understands that Manchester City have the strongest interest in Musiala at the moment, though his contract situation also has Liverpool, Man United, Chelsea and Real Madrid on alert.City’s interest stems from the fact that they have Kevin De Bruyne in the final year of his contract and facing an uncertain future. Musiala could be an ideal long-term replacement for De Bruyne, but other big clubs can’t be ruled out either, with Liverpool also in the market for an elite attacking player like this as Mohamed Salah is in a similar situation to De Bruyne – in the final year of his contract and attracting interest from Saudi Arabia.Maybe more than ever, it feels like Musiala is going to extend his deal with Bayern Munich. As part of that, the Bavarians are likely to make Musiala insanely rich, which should keep him happy for the next four-to-five years. However, if Musiala were to jump ship...where would he be most likely to go. Let’s take a look at those aforementioned options: Manchester City: This is a scary one because every major player seemingly want to play for Pep Guardiola at some point. When he leaves, though, the appeal of City will be far less. For now, though, the club is likely looking for its next-gen Kevin De Bruyne and Musiala could fit that bill (even if his game is different than De Bruyne’s). Given the money available, City could blow away Musiala with an offer (if it can avoid Financial Fair Play penalties). Real Madrid: Well, it seems like Real Madrid wants to build a team full of young, pacey stars. Certainly, there is a pull to Madrid for a lot of players, but there might not be enough money or enough footballs for this to work. Liverpool FC: The Reds will need a jolt and Musiala could be the centerpiece of a new generation for the club. Does he want that kind of responsibility...in England...at this point in his career?Chelsea FC: This seems like the least likely option for a number of reasons — mostly because Chelsea had every opportunity to let Musiala progress to the the first team...but did not. And Kompany himself does appear to be appreciative of the young striker’s talents.“We’ve scored 13 goals or so in the last three games,” Kompany said ahead of this weekend’s Bundesliga clash with Union Berlin (as captured via @iMiaSanMia). “So far, everyone in the team has contributed to where we are now. We believe that everyone will play a role in the end. Mathys is doing very well and that’s why he keeps getting his chance here. He’s still a very young player. We are a group and everyone is part of it.”Tel so far has appeared in only four of Bayern’s eight Bundesliga games, with just one start and zero goals. He has another two appearances in the DFB-Pokal, including Wednesday’s 4-0 win over Mainz, and a brief five minute cameo in the Champions League — all without a goal or assist. Serge Gnabry has had a relatively bright start to his season for Bayern Munich. So far, he has tallied a total of 2 goals and 4 assists from a total of 12 appearances across all competitions, including the late winner in Bayern’s Bundesliga opener against VfL Wolfsburg, where they won 3-2. Even with the arrival of Michael Olise from Crystal Palace during the summer transfer window, Gnabry has been getting a fair amount of starts this season under new manager Vincent Kompany. He is already off to a better start this season than he was at this point last season, when he had already suffered his first injury problem that kept him sideline up until mid November before getting injured again shortly thereafter.All in all last season, Gnabry was completely hampered by separate injury problems last season, having missed a total of 26 matches across all competitions through injury. The injuries led him to missing out on the Euros with Germany and a continued decline in his market value with his Bayern contract set to expire in June 2026.In a recent interview with Bayern’s club magazine Säbener51, Gnabry explained that he really had to adjust to being injured so often last season, even though they really could not figure out why there was such a recurrence of issues. “There wasn’t just one reason why I kept getting injured. So I didn’t do anything differently. I’m still doing the same things as always, and things are going great at the moment. But of course I’ve also adapted things over the course of my career. I’m someone who always wants to learn something new anyway, who likes to explore new avenues,” he explained (via @iMiaSanMia). Now, Musiala is set to once again ponder his long-term future with the club, as other topics at his position as well as around it — from teammates Leroy Sané and Alphonso Davies on the wings and potential attacking midfielder transfer Florian Wirtz of Bayer Leverkusen — swirl around him.But one guy in his — and Bayern’s corner — seems to be veteran Thomas Müller, whose position in Bayern’s forward line Musiala seems to have largely inherited. It’s a passing of the torch Müller has more than graciously embraced.“I think Jamal knows how important he is to the fans, how much people love him,” the 35-year-old Müller said in comments captured by SID Sportnews (via @iMiaSanMia). “Not just at Bayern, but in all of Germany. I think he would do well to think about it three, four, five times — that’s if he’s even thinking at all about not staying here.”All indications lately are that Musiala is delighted in be in Munich. But will signing a new contract be forthcoming? We’ll all just have to wait and see.

Dayot Upamecano’s time in Munich has been the same, although with far more lows than highs. Upamecano was once one of the most touted young center-backs in the world during his time at RB Leipzig, but has never hit his ceiling since. Regardless of that, it is reported that Upamecano is still Kompany’s preferred center-back.It is difficult to say how long Kompany will stay with Bayern, but based on the club’s recent track record with managers, patience doesn’t last long. Mainz 05 was on the receiving end of a 4-0 lashing by Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday...but that did not stop its players from lashing out at the referee after the match for calls that favored the German Rekordmeister.While Bayern was the fortunate beneficiaries of a lack of VAR in the second round of the German cup, its players also had something to say about the refereeing. Mainz came to play tough, flying into challenges, sometimes cynically — and was perhaps lucky to escape the match with only three yellow cards and no reds.“Fouls are always part of the game,” said Jamal Musiala of a first-half takedown by Mainz’s Dominik Kohr (as captured by t-online reporter Julian Buhl, via @iMiaSanMia). “In this case, it felt a bit more than a small foul. I also talked to the referee about that. It’s about protecting the players. If they [opponents] feel they can go in hard 3 or 4 times before they get a yellow card, they would do it every time. I don’t often complain, but that hurt more than normal.”Musiala was left sprawled on the turf on that occasion while Kohr looked none too apologetic. The Bayern playmaker got the last laugh, however, as he came out of the match with three goals, all scored in an electric first half.So who had more of a point about the referees? By now, many people will have read the Sport Bild report on how Bayern Munich’s Thomas Müller could be interested in a possible move to Major League Soccer. Apparently the USA really is the land of opportunity for everyone. If he does so, Müller would follow in the footsteps of his namesake Gerd, not to mention the legendary Franz Beckenbauer and his friend Bastian Schweinsteiger.But why go to America when there’s a whole other wonderful land on the other side of the world? This writer is obviously talking about his home country of South Korea. While the market may not be as big as that of the MLS, there are still many enticing things about the K League that should turn Müller’s head. Here are a few examples.1. Football is the most popular sport in South KoreaUnlike the USA, where football takes a back seat to baseball, basketball, hockey, and American football, South Korea’s number one sport is football. The national team’s games are almost always sold out, and although the K League used to be more in the shadows, it’s becoming more and more popular by the day, with attendance records being broken every season. The fans who frequent the stadiums range from ardent enthusiasts screaming and singing from 90 minutes straight to people who just want a nice day out and a good game of football. A diverse crowd, but one all united by the beautiful game. What’s not to love?2. Müller himself is immensely popularMüller is one of Bayern’s most popular players in the current squad, if not the most popular. That became even more apparent during Bayern’s Seoul tour last summer, when Müller sold more jerseys than any of his teammates. Korean fans are crazy for Müller, and they will undoubtedly show their love and support by buying his shirts and going to his games every week, this writer included. FC Seoul got a massive boost in fans after they signed Jesse Lingard last winter, so one can only imagine how big of a crowd Müller will draw. 3. Korea is an incredibly convenient country to live inThis is probably the biggest draw for foreigners, especially when compared to the USA. When it comes to convenience, no one does it like the Koreans. The big cities where most of the K League clubs are located are extremely urbanized, and one can find everything he or she needs by just looking around or taking a ten minute walk, give or take. Said cities are all linked together with Korea’s fantastic high speed rail service, the KTX (Korea Train Express) and SRT (Super Rapid Train; yes, it sounds corny), so there’s no trouble getting around as well. And of course, the food is top notch. Koreans also happen to be quite friendly towards foreigners, and a lot of them speak English.These are just a few reasons why Müller should look to the Land of the Morning Calm for any retirement plans should he decide to continue his career in other continents. But what kind of teams would he even go to? Let’s take a look at a couple of options.FC SeoulThe obvious choice. With the biggest stadium in the country, an excellent coach in Kim Gi-dong, and a prime location smack in the middle of the capital, FC Seoul would be the most logical destination for many foreigners. Pohang SteelersA team with a rich, trophy-laden history, the Steelers are sponsored by Pohang Steelworks, one of the biggest steel refineries in South Korea. Their stadium, the Steelyard, is rather small, with only around 12000 seats, but the atmosphere on matchday is second to none in the K League. Ulsan HyundaiJust a few miles south from Pohang lies the metropolitan city of Ulsan, home of the K League champions. Coming off a historic league three-peat, Ulsan are easily the best team in the K League currently, and are sponsored by Hyundai Heavy Industries.
