So what is the Bayern gene?“I would describe this gene like this: You always want to win, you always have to win, and at the same time everyone else wants to beat you,” Gnabry explained, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “You have to constantly fight against that because you don’t want to lose, no matter what. I adopted this gene very quickly. It’s very difficult for me to imagine not feeling this mentality in me at some point.”But how did Gnabry acquire this Bayern gene? Well, it’s the atmosphere, the intense desire to win that spreads through every inch of the Säbener Straße, of course.“It happens quite automatically,” Gnabry affirmed via @iMiaSanMia. “Anyone who comes to Bayern very quickly realises that a different wind blows in training, that games are approached differently. As a member of the supervisory board of Bayern Munich, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge enjoys a luxury seat with a terrific view whenever he goes to watch Bayern play in the Allianz Arena. Surely one would see this as the best seat in the house, but Rummenigge knows something is missing. And he wants to experience that something personally.Speaking in a recent interview, Rummenigge revealed his desire to join the fans in the Südkurve.“That’s one of the things on my to-do list. I just want to watch a game from the fans’ perspective. It’s the stands that create the atmosphere in our stadium. I’ve always wanted to experience that with the fans because we’ve always enjoyed it in the stadium - especially in the good, successful games where we gave it our all,” the former Inter Milan player admitted, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “I’ll do that as soon as possible. Like the fans, I would put on a shirt with the number and name of one of our players and would probably even join in the dance — as far as I can manage that.”What shirt would Rummenigge wear? Rumors swirl that Neuer could retire as Bayern eyes Costa (CaughtOffside)The future for Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is uncertain and if the veteran does retire, the Bavarians could pursue Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Per CaughtOffside, the competition for Costa could be tough as Chelsea FC is also interested: Chelsea remain interested in Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa as a long-term transfer target, but could face competition from Bayern Munich as Manuel Neuer is considering retiring at the end of the season. Sources with a close understanding of the situation have informed CaughtOffside that Chelsea have long had an interest in Costa after being impressed by his performances at Porto, with the Blues still keeping an eye on the goalkeeper market after some patchy form from Robert Sanchez.Costa could likely be an upgrade on Sanchez, who has looked like a bit of a weak link in Enzo Maresca’s side this season, but Bayern are also very interested in the Portugal international. CaughtOffside understands that Porto are not keen on letting Costa go, and it could take offers in the region of €70m to persuade them to let the 25-year-old leave the club.Chelsea have made real strides since appointing Maresca as manager, but it seems pretty clear that this team is still lacking a genuine world class ‘keeper like the great Chelsea sides of old. In the first half of Bayern Munich’s 4-0 DFB-POkal win over Mainz 05 star striker Harry Kane barrelled down hard on Die Nullfünfer goalkeeper Robin Zentner, who was aggressively coming out to make a play on the ball. As happens sometimes in football, there was contact. Kane did the best he could to avoid it, but his cleat did clip Zentner’s head and the goalkeeper needed a bandage over his eye. After the match, Zentner was not about to absolve Kane of any blame. “Yes, I think you can blame him. I think he saw relatively early that he couldn’t get to the ball, so he could have just stayed away,” said Zentner (via @iMiaSanMia). In fairness to Kane, it was an aggressive play by two equally aggressive players. It could be argued, though, that — intentional or not — Kane’s cleat caused enough of an issue and was reckless enough to earn more than just a warning.Luckily for Bayern Munich, though, no cards were given and Kane went on to play a very solid first half. According to a report from Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich defender Hiroki Ito continues to make progress in his rehab. However, the Bavarians are taking a very conservative approach with Ito’s return. After the Japanese defender suffered a setback two weeks ago, Bayern Munich wants to play it safe with a player, who could have a key role on the backline upon his return: Hiroki Itō completed an individual session, including exercises with the ball, alongside rehab coach Simon Martinello who was regularly monitoring the player’s performances through a tablet. When Bayern Munich center-back Eric Dier pulled up lame, grabbing his hamstring in the second half of the team’s 4-0 victory over Mainz 05 in the DFB-Pokal, many fans immediately started to worry about the club’s dwindling depth at center-back. While Kim Min-jae is healthy, Dayot Upamecano is nursing a thigh injury and youngster Tarek Buchmann is still trying to get fully back to health after about a year of battling injuries. Luckily for the Bavarians, Dier’s pain might have been temporary or even short-term per Bild journalist Michel Schröer (as captured by @iMiaSanMia): Eric Dier left the pitch limping after his substitution last night. But later in the tunnel things were looking good for him, therefore he’s not expected to have suffered anything major.Hmmm...Dier does have a history of needing to leave the field due to some temporary issues. Regardless, Upamecano is expected to play this weekend against Union Berlin, but it is not a definite. Similarly, Dier’s situation sounds good, but that might not necessarily mean that he will be able to go this weekend. If — somehow — both center-backs are held out, we could see Leon Goretzka get the nod on the backline. Champions League losses to Aston Villa and Barcelona, along with Bundesliga draws against Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt, have cast a dark cloud over the squad. A favorable November schedule ends with high profile matches against PSG and Dortmund to test Kompany’s midseason adjustments.The biggest risers in the updated rankings are João Palhinha and Leroy Sané (+6). Goalkeepers Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich saw the biggest drops (-3). November is packed with six more games for Bayern, plus an international break.This monthly series will combine Kompany’s pecking order with on-field performances. The first 11 players aren’t necessarily the starting XI (due to position issues) but players out with injuries will be relegated to the bottom of the list, starting at #23 in this edition.1) Jamal MusialaMusiala’s absence has accentuated his creative importance to the offense. He looked back to full form against Bochum and scored his first professional hat trick against Mainz. Musiala will be expected to carry a heavy load in the coming months with the hectic schedule.2) Harry KaneAfter a three-game drought, Kane scored in three consecutive matches to close out the month. Kane also took a detour to France this week to collect the Ballon d’Or Gerd Muller Trophy for scoring the most goals in Europe last season. Kane remains irreplaceable on a squad that doesn’t have a reliable backup striker.3) Michael OliseOnly Kane (15 goals) has outscored Olise (7 goals) this season as Olise has found the back of the net in a variety of ways. His fantastic performances have kept Leroy Sané on the bench much longer than anticipated. Fans are now wondering if there’s a scenario that presents an attacking midfield of Musiala, Olise, and Sané that would wreak havoc on opponents.4) Joshua KimmichKimmich has fully claimed the number six spot as his own, refusing to sit out a single minute of the season so far. Bayern fans are clamoring for Kimmich to slide to right back so João Palhinha can play the number six, killing two birds with one stone. Until Kimmich signs an extension, Kompany will have to leave Kimmich at his desired spot in the middle.5) Alphonso DaviesDavies was Bayern’s best defender in October and looks more confident than his tumultuous time under Thomas Tuchel. Bayern Munich attacker Michael Olise might be in some hot water given Germany’s strong anti-middle finger sentiment. During his team-s 4-0 victory over Mainz 05 in the DFB-Pokal, Olise, who did not start the match, allegedly had a beer thrown at him and (also allegedly) retaliated with a flip of the bird to the people who tossed the beer. Bayern Munich advanced to the third round of the DFB-Pokal with a comprehensive 4-0 win at Mainz led by a Jamal Musiala hat-trick in the first half, capped off by a goal from Leroy Sané just before the halftime interval. All of the damage was done in the first half for Vincent Kompany’s men and Belgian manager can looked ahead to this weekend’s Union Berlin clash in the Bundesliga full of confidence after two consecutive wins by a margin of four or more goals. Sané, Eric Dier, and Serge Gnabry were the only three changes from the 5-0 win over VfL Bochum that Kompany decided to make for the win over Mainz, but he was able to take off both Musiala and Harry Kane at the halftime break to help preserve them for the matches to come. Even youngster Airjon Ibrahimovic was able to get a cameo when he replaced Dier in the 77th minute, underlying the comfortability with which Bayern dispatched of a Mainz side that have been struggling in the Bundesliga so far this season.After the match, Kompany explained how he is doing what he can to keep Musiala grounded, even when he has huge performances like the one he put forth under the lights at the MEWA Arena. “He’s making the right steps, also physically. He brings a lot of joy to the team. We’re making sure to keep him fresh. Hopefully Saturday he can carry on like today. He has to stay calm. We’re supporting him. Sometimes things don’t go well - and when things are going well, you can always do more,” the Bayern manager explained, knowing that his star playmaker is also just not too far removed from an injury problem that saw him miss some action for the club earlier this month (via @iMiaSanMia).The fact that Musiala was able to get a hat-trick within the first 45 minutes was a huge bonus for Kompany. Being able to take him off and bring on both Mathys Tel and Thomas Müller is a type of luxury most managers do not possess, but now both Kane and Musiala will be well rested for Union Berlin this weekend. Jamal Musiala has been on an unbelievable journey with Bayern Munich, growing up to become a genuine superstar of the game and becoming one of the team’s most important players. Despite his tender years, he is now already working under his fourth head coach at Bayern in Vincent Kompany and knows the growing pains of getting used to a new coach. So he knows what he is saying when he says that the team is still adapting to the new coach’s vision: “I really like [Kompany’s playstyle]. After suffering a minor injury, a bruise to the thigh, Dayot Upamecano was left out of Bayern Munich’s squad for Wednesday’s game versus Mainz in the DFB-Pokal. The Frenchman wasn’t benched, but rather completely left out of the squad that dominated in a 4-0 win. However, according to board member for sport Max Eberl, there is a solid chance Upamecano could make his return this weekend against Union Berlin.“I assume [Upamecano will be available on Saturday]. That’s why we left him out today. Now we have to see day by day,” Eberl replied to questions about the defender’s status (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).Upamecano’s absence may not have been devastating for Bayern, but the club could always use the Frenchman’s skill at the backline, despite his occasional blunders. Against Mainz, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany resorted to playing Konrad Laimer as a center-back, and in fact ended the game with a back four that consisted of Joshua Kimmich, Laimer, Leon Goretzka, and Raphaël Guerreiro.
