Bayern Munich continued shrugging off its heavy Champions League defeat to FC Barcelona with another big win.In the week since falling 4-1 to Barça in Spain, Bayern has notched road victories of 5-0 at VfL Bochum and now 4-0 at Mainz 05, in the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal, respectively. But while the results were important, so too is the progress.“The main focus was on our performance and our best level, which we were able to bring to the pitch today,” said head coach Vincent Kompany afterwards in comments captured via @iMiaSanMia. “The game started very well for us with the early goal, then the course of the game was perfect. It’s great that we advanced to the next round. Can the team still get better? My answer is yes, so we have to keep improving.”Bayern’s next test will be back at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Saturday, when Union Berlin comes to town. Upamecano was held out due to a bruised thigh. Otherwise, Leroy Sané got the nod over Michael Olise, Konrad Laimer remained in the lineup over Raphael Guerreiro, and Serge Gnabry stepped back in for Kingsley Coman. For Mainz 05, Bayern Munich loanees Armindo Sieb and Gabriel Vidović were in the starting XI. For the second consecutive game, Bayern Munich got started early (and even earlier than Saturday). Some nice attacking play from Gnabry to Alphonso Davies to Harry Kane to Jamal Musiala resulted in a nice goal for the youngster in the 2nd minute. Bayern Munich’s attacking movements were absolutely on-point right off the bat.Minutes later, Kane almost put Bayern Munich up 2-0, but Mainz 05 Robin Zentner came out to make a brave play and Kane’s cleat clipped the goalkeeper. Luckily, Zentner only needed a small bandage to deal with what was ailing him. He would go on to blame Kane after the game for the incident.In the 27th minute, Gnabry has two golden opportunities from point-blank range, but could not find a way to put the ball into the net. Surely, the Germany international would love to have that sequence back. In the 30th minute, Sané also probably should have scored...if Musiala had not taken care of business earlier, Bayern Munich fans might have started to get a little anxious. For his part, Zentner was standing tall despite being under pretty consistent duress. Mainz 05 would start to build some momentum, though, and generate a couple decent chances. In the 37th minute, however, Sané sent in a curling ball from the right-side, which found Kane’s head. The Englishman pounded a header off of a prone Zentner, who did very well to fend it off. Unfortunately for the Mainz 05 goalkeeper, Musiala was lying in wait to head it home for his second goal of the match. Just like that, Bayern Munich fans could exhale.In the third minute of added time for the first half, Bayern Munich had a frantic counter-attack that culminated with Davies running into a defender, which saw both players go down before the ball squirted free to Sané, who easily made it 3-0.Seconds later, Sané sent a ball to a driving Laimer, who pounded in cross that was first met by a Mainz defender, who deflected it into Zentner. The ball bounced over to Musiala, who was there to put away for his third goal of the half and a 4-0 lead. Kompany went to his bench and Bayern Munich lost that sense of urgency it once had. With a massive lead and Mainz 05 unable to really make any headway, Bayern Munich was content to let the match play out. In a stroke of bad luck, Dier pulled up lame with what looked like a hamstring injury. Arijon Ibrahimović entered the match, which was good to see, but now Upamecano and Dier are both banged up at a very thin position on the roster. Overall, Bayern Munich was just dominant and was never seriously threatened. What else can you say? But the amazing, brilliant, very good day for Musiala fans may have just become better. Asked after the match about if a contract extension soon is conceivable for him, Musiala teased an affirmation.“Yes, I can imagine it. We are in talks. I’m happy here,” Musiala said, in comments captured by @iMiaSanMiaThese are just three short sentences, yet they mean so much for Bayern. According to a report from Sky Sport journalists Kerry Hau and Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich could be kicking around the idea of sending Mathys Tel away on a loan assignment. Tel, who has become an afterthought under new coach Vincent Kompany, has no goals and no assists in six games across all competitions — and has only tallied 179 minutes of field time. After a surge last season as a super-sub under Thomas Tuchel, Tel has just become lost in the shuffle within an attacking group that includes Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sané, and Thomas Müller, who all appear to be ahead of him at the moment: Under certain conditions, FC Bayern may consider a loan for Mathys #Tel in winter to provide him with regular playing time ✔️However, a final decision has not yet been made. The 19y/o forward currently has no plans to go out on loan, as he still intends to establish himself.Simply put, Tel is not getting enough of a chance to develop this season and while there is something to be said for being in Bayern Munich’s day-to-day training environment, Tel needs far more game time than he is currently getting. No longer a fixture in the XI but no less influential, he is Bayern’s Special One — just without any of the ego. Müller was asked about his “special status” on the team in a wide-ranging interview for Bundesliga.com, and he stressed that his focus is on using his powers for the collective good. “I have this status not because I was given it, but because I fulfill every role, no matter what it is, with passion,” the 35-year-old veteran said in remarks captured by @iMiaSanMia. “I want to influence my teammates naturally, and as positively as I can because that is the best for both me and the team. “When you approach a younger player, it’s clear that you want to help them perform better so they can realize their potential and contribute to the overall success. It is therefore obvious for me to do that, but I also know that not everyone has the capacity to take care of others while also focusing on their own game. Also, perhaps some others are not confident enough to share information with others. That’s why I try to remove everyone’s reservations a bit.” From mentoring the likes of Jamal Musiala to Aleksandar Pavlović, to the even publicly critiquing fellow captain Joshua Kimmich when he feels it is warranted, Müller is definitely not shy when it comes to making himself heard. His role on the field may not be what it once was now under Vincent Kompany, but the Raumdeuter clearly still has much to offer to the team.

Taking care of business: Bayern Munich’s new motto.Still smarting from the pain of the heavy Champions League defeat to FC Barcelona, Vincent Kompany’s squad responded in the only way they could, by putting their heads down and getting straight back to work. On Wednesday the German record champions dispatched a second straight opponent by a wide margin, this time dismantling Mainz 05 in a 4-0 DFB-Pokal road victory.Bayern started the match with gumption, pouring intense pressing and energy and creating an early first goal, arriving from Jamal Musiala via Alphonso Davies. It was only the second minute, but already by then it felt like it had been a long time coming.To their credit though, the hosts played as underdogs have often successfully done against the Bavarians: aggressive. They trapped Bayern in their own defensive half when they could and flew into every challenge, knowing that to sit back against the Rekordmeister was to invite defeat. That was not nearly enough, however. Jamal Musiala earned himself a first-half hat-trick — once again scoring with his head — and Leroy Sané, in his first start under Vincent Kompany, buried one home just before the whistle. The talented winger with much to prove looked still just a little hesitant, but the goal should do wonders for his confidence going forward. A quiet second half saw run outs for youngsters Arijon Ibrahimović and Mathys Tel, although very little of note happened in any direction. Both sides settled for the 4-0 scoreline that the half began with, and Bayern — apparently lucky not to face a powerful lower division side like Holstein Kiel or FC Saarbrücken — advances past the second round of the cup.How did everyone do? In the 19th minute of Bayern Munich’s eventual 4-0 win over 1. FSV Mainz 05, Jamal Musiala received the ball near the halfway line. Opposition player Dominik Kohr came running to meet him and, without breaking stride, slammed his elbow into Musiala’s neck, hitting the young German so hard he was sent spinning in the air before painfully landing on the ground. Kohr looked astonished and frustrated at referee Sacha Stegemann’s decision to award him a yellow card for the foul, and it was that frustration- after seeing Musiala scored a hat trick, guide his team to a comfortable victory and take home the match day ball- that stuck with the 30-year-old German. Speaking after the match, Kohr claimed that the referee was heavily biased towards Bayern: “The referee had a Bayern shirt on today. We have to say that clearly. Every little call was in Bayern’s favor,” Kohr exclaimed, via @iMiaSanMia. The second goal was a clear offside. Bayern Munich’s first half against FSV Mainz 05 in the DFB-Pokal saw the Bavarians create many amazing high quality chances. There were terrible early misses, such as Serge Gnabry’s miss from close range, or Leroy Sane’s wasted one-on-one with opposition goalkeeper Robin Zentner, but ultimately Bayern still went into halftime four goals to the good. It was, overall, incredible efficiency in creating gilt-edged chances.“It’s always good to take an early lead away from home. We were very serious and efficient in the first half — we could’ve scored more,” Kimmich proudly stated in post-match comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “In the second half, we didn’t want to give the opponent anything and kept control of the ball. We’re happy to advance to the next round.”In the end, it was the kind of comfortable win that Bayern really needed after so many early, embarrassing exits in the DFB-Pokal. Since the start of 2020, Bayern Munich won the same number of Champions League finals as they have Pokal 2nd rounds. The DFB Pokal, especially the 2nd round, is the true pinnacle of sporting merit, where the wheat is separated from the chaff. Okay, maybe not. Still, given how long it’s been since Bayern Munich last made a dent in this competition, it’d be nice to actually try for a change. Team newsIn terms of injuries, it’s slowly getting better. Hiroki Ito, Sacha Boey, and Josip Stanišić are all in various stages of recovery, while Aleksandar Pavlović is unlikely to feature again in 2024. Jamal Musiala, however, is fully fit — he proved on Sunday that he’s ready to start games again. Therefore, given what we know about Kompany, what kind of lineup can we expect? Well, Harry Kane likely starts up top, with Jamal Musiala behind him. Michael Olise is still ahead of Leroy Sané in the pecking order, but Kingsley Coman might get the nod ahead of Serge Gnabry after his performance against Bochum on Sunday. He also scored 5 goals for the DFB in 3 qualifying games for the U17 European Championship. He is a street kicker type. His left foot is described as “extraordinary” at the Bayern campus. Internally, there is discussion about bringing him up to the U19s in the winter - and loaning him out next summer. However, other clubs are also keeping an eye on his development and have expressed interest in him - including Ajax Amsterdam and Real Madrid. Karl’s agent (contract until 2026 without professional connection) is former FCB star Michael Ballack.BFW AnalysisOf course there is interest from other clubs in Karl. They would be silly not to, considering how special his talent genuinely is. But interest from top clubs in young talent is common. There was interest in Paul Wanner, Arijon Ibrahimović, Jamal Musiala and so many other highly rated young players in the academy. The key was always for Bayern to offer the players a good perspective for their development.Considering Karl was just promoted to the U-19s and started in a crucial UEFA Youth League match against FC Barcelona, Karl is well on his way to rising through the ranks. There seems little reason for this interest to become anything more than the footnote in history similar interest for the likes of Wanner and Ibrahimović became as the little genius with the incredible left foot signs a new deal at Bayern.

For most of Bayern Munich’s season thus far, Vincent Kompany has had a preference of playing a front four of Harry Kane, Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala, and one of either Serge Gnabry or Kingsley Coman. Different injuries to different players have, of course, called for rotations to his starting lineups as well a fixture congestion across all three competitions. For players like Leroy Sané, Thomas Müller, and Mathys Tel, they have become rather accustomed this season to coming off of the bench for Kompany, knowing full well that Olise’s arrival from Crystal Palace would threaten their prospects.However, it does seem to most concerning for Leroy Sané, especially since he is a player that is coming up on a period where they will try to figure out a contract extension. His current contract with the club runs through June 2025, so he is approaching the final year of his contract. He has previously expressed openness to extending his deal with the Rekordmeister, but will conditions from his camp eventually involved how much playing time he gets under Kompany? Only time will tell the answer to that looming question, but there is also the question of if there will ever come a time where Sané starts to actually get more minutes and starting time this season under Kompany.So far, Sané has clocked a total of 159 minutes for Bayern across all competitions this season, and he was working his way back to fitness following an injury that required surgery after his involvement with Germany at the Euros. From his 7 appearances between the Bundesliga and the Champions League, he has come on as a substitute in every single one, managing to score once in the Bundesliga (against VfL Bochum) and once in the Champions League (vs. Dinamo Zagreb). The Numbers Don’t LieIronically enough, Sané’s goal against Bochum in the recent 5-0 win was his 50th for the club and his 100th goal contribution since he joined from Manchester City. That brought his total tally in his time at Bayern thus far to 50 goals and 50 assists from a total of 182 appearances, meaning he is involved in a goal every 117 minutes (via @iMiaSanMia). On the surface, those numbers suggest that he is an attacking player that should be getting more minutes to yield higher percentages for goal returns, but Bayern has not had any troubles scoring goals this season with the attacking players Kompany already most often utilizes. There is a level of consistency there that none of the other wingers in Bayern’s ranks can currently say they’ve displayed, though Olise is certainly on the right track.Contrary to the pair of goals he’s scored this season, too, most of Sané’s goal-streaks in previous seasons come when he is regularly starting, and the manager shows a continued level of faith in the winger.
