Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund is sure that the team is headed in the right direction despite some uneven results of late. “I’m convinced that the team has the key to success if they follow the match plan. Then the chances are very high that we will be successful. It’s a fact that the team is really giving it their all and has worked hard. The coach and the coaching staff are also working hard and professionally. We will reward ourselves with results. That’s why I am firmly convinced in this path,” said Freund (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). Freund also wanted to back Manuel Neuer, who has come under fire on social media. “Manu certainly had games in which he didn’t excel. It’s difficult for a goalkeeper when there aren’t many chances conceded but these chances are taken with ice-cold precision. Manu is always trying to improve. He’s playing a very attacking goalkeeping game, our style of play suits him. He’s still a great support for the team, a great personality. He is very present, we are very happy that he’s in goal for us. There will be many games in which we will talk differently about our goalkeeper because he has won games for us. We are quite sure of that,” said Freund.That could be the case soon enough, but for now Neuer — like many of his mates — is the target for a lot of unhappy fans. It is hard to say if Aleksandar Pavlović being fit and available for Bayern Munich’s 4-1 loss to Barcelona in the Champions League would have made a massive difference in the outcome of the match or not, but Vincent Kompany certainly was not thrilled to have lost his midfielder early on in the 4-0 win over VfB Stuttgart. There is now an open window for João Palhinha to get some needed minutes in midfield alongside Joshua Kimmich for Bayern, but the performance in Barcelona did not exactly bode well for that double pivot. In fairness to Palhinha, there were not too many players from Bayern’s squad that were able to come away from Barcelona with high plaudits in the losing effort, and Kompany also was not aided by not being able to start Jamal Musiala — the playmaker just made his way back from injury and was a sub off the bench in the second half. It was evident on the night, though; whatever worked against Stuttgart just days prior, did not work against Barcelona.Despite being out-classed by the Catalan La Liga outfit, Kimmich is still keeping an upbeat attitude about Bayern’s midfield, even though they will be without Pavlović until the start of 2025. The youngsters collarbone injury was the result of a nasty fall against Stuttgart and required an operation that now requires a lengthy recovery period. For Kimmich, the rest of the talent in the squad should be able to fill the temporary void left by Pavlović’s collarbone injury. “We’ll really miss Aleks. He started the season really well. But we’re still well covered in the position and will try to make up for his absence. That’s generally what makes a team, that the others are there when someone’s out. And we’ve got great confidence in the other guys,” he explained in the press conference ahead of the Barcelona clash (via @iMiaSanMia). As far as depth is concerned in midfield for Kompany, even without Pavlović for now, the Belgian manager still has Kimmich, Palhinha, and Leon Goretzka in the ranks as far as true central midfielders, though both Konrad Laimer and Raphaël Guerreiro that can play there, too. While it may be a bit more of a tactical stretch, too, even Musiala and Thomas Müller have played in slightly more retreated midfield roles, but that is far less common. Bayern Munich’s Champions League tilt against FC Barcelona this Wednesday was a spectacular game of cat-and-mouse — one in which the Bavarians even held a clear upper hand, for a spell.So how did Bayern end up as helpless prey — and 4-1 losers — in the clutches of former coach Hansi Flick and a rampant Barça side?Let’s review.Barça rolls the dice…and winsIt’s hard to believe, but this is only Year One of the Flick era at Barcelona. The former Bayern and Germany men’s national team coach has the help of an impressive stable of La Masia talent, but that isn’t all. Under Flick, the transformation has been instantaneous. This edition of the Barça team presses relentlessly, and pushes the defensive line up to the half to compensate. That left ample space in behind, which the Bavarians seemed to salivate immediately at the possibility to punish. And that, in turn, left space behind on the other side...with the two teams posing the question to one another: who will get punished first?As it happened, it was Bayern who got hit inside of one minute. Joshua Kimmich is a step late and a step wrong in reacting and Raphinha gets the better of him: Media TUDN/YouTube One steps up, the other retreats: Bayern center-back Dayot Upamecano and midfielder Joshua Kimmich have to coordinate this perfectly. Barcelona’s Raphinha gets the better of Kimmich. An unlucky break? In some ways. But throughout a first half characterized by Bayern ascendancy, it was the younger Barça side’s gambles, however dicey, that looked wiser and more calculated.Take a look at Barcelona’s aggressive pressing structure, which posed Bayern’s veteran keeper Manuel Neuer some real challenges in build-up at times — but also left wide open options should Bayern manage to play out of it, as Neuer does here:Flick’s calculation appears twofold: one, that Neuer would be forced into the occasional mistake (and he was, giving the ball straight away at one point in the first half). Two, that Bayern couldn’t make hay with all that real estate in the wide areas, as getting the ball to a player in that position still left a lot of work to be done — and distance to cover. That tended to be the case but the Catalans can thank their lucky stars they weren’t punished more frequently. Bayern was frequently its own worst enemy in the early going, spotting the spaces and pinging vertical balls over the top to nobody, rather than the raking cross-field passes that would have presented actual danger, and which looked like it was in the gameplan anyway.There is also the question of Vincent Kompany’s lineup, or perhaps more accurately his available selections — as in the earlier example where Neuer finds Michael Olise all alone on the wings. The result is an immediate 3-on-1 overload with potential daggers in behind...but 35-year-old Thomas Müller, nor Harry Kane, were the speedsters to best fit this tactic. Media TUDN/YouTube Robert Lewandowski knows where the open man is and points him out. It is the gamble Barça is willing to take, with its defensive line pushed up to the half line. Media TUDN/YouTube Bayern’s Olise and Guerreiro combine in the space afforded them but this 3-v-1 is still far from goal, and the two runners lacking in pace. Kane does make the CBs-splitting run here but doesn’t have the pace to present lethal danger, and his touch lets him down to make for an easy save from Iñaki Peña. Additionally, while Guerreiro’s has a decent angle for this pass, the left-footer was less effective an option on the overlap down the right. Flick may have regarded Bayern as lacking the personnel to really make them pay. If that was the gamble, he was right.Bayern really did have Barça where it wantedWhen the Bavarians kept their composure though, they really did have Barcelona scrambling. Not for nothing did…

Former Bayern Munich star and current Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Mario Götze will always be remembered as the player who scored the World Cup winning goal in 2014. Before that, in the early 2010s, he was lighting up the world at Borussia Dortmund.Götze recently reflected upon his move in the book “Stimmen der Eintracht.” Per @DIEZEIT via @iMiaSanMia, in a letter Götze wrote to himself, he mentioned the following about how his fascination with Barcelona influenced his move to Bayern: “When Pep Guardiola, the legendary coach of FC Barcelona, went to Munich and I received an offer from Bayern in the winter of 2012, my decision was also influenced by my fascination with FC Barcelona, which I had since my youth. I loved Barça football. I wanted to play that football, too.”His proximity to Bayern helped too as well as the place Bayern occupied in his heart: “With Pep, and memories of my early childhood also played a role, growing up in the Allgäu, my proximity to FC Bayern, my favourite club at the time. All sorts of clubs wanted me back then. Barcelona, Bayern, I could have gone anywhere.”However, perhaps, Götze would have done things differently today: “I know you don’t think much of it when I tell you: stay in Dortmund a bit longer. It will be good for you and your development.”Plenty of fans can agree with Götze’s view of the situation. Very few can forget watching Bayern play Dortmund in the Champions League final in 2013 with an injured Götze in the stands. That transfer captured the imagination as Bayern basically reigned supreme over BVB on and off the pitch. Götze’s career in Munich never quite took off and he returned to Dortmund after three seasons.

FC Bayern München v RB Leipzig - DFL Supercup 2023 Photo by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images via Getty Images Bayern had Mintzlaff in their sights, but they could still wind up renewing the contract of current CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen. Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen is set to have his future with the club decided next month when the supervisory board has their next meeting. Dreesen’s current contract with the club as their CEO runs through June 2025, so he is approaching the final year on his contract after having been brought in to replace Oliver Kahn after the conclusion of the 2022/23 season. At the time, both Kahn and then sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić were let go by the club on the final day of the Bundesliga season where Bayern lifted the Meisterschale by virtue of their late win at FC Köln and Borussia Dortmund’s home draw to Mainz.It is still unclear whether or not Bayern plans on renewing Dreesen’s contract or not, but there is still time for them to make the decision. Regardless of what decision is made, he can, and likely will, remain in his post until the season concludes. However, in the interim, it has been reported by Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg that Bayern has, in fact, approached former RB Leipzig CEO and current CEO of Corporate Projects and Investments for Red Bull Oliver Mintzlaff. They had wanted to see if Mintzlaff would be interested in potentially replacing Dreesen as they are exploring the market for potential alternatives should Dreesen choose to step down or not renew his contract, but the former Leipzig CEO has initially declined the potential for an offer. He probably already has his plate plenty full, but Max Eberl also previously worked at Leipzig and could have some pull with Mintzlaff if Bayern really wants to make a strong push for him. In the overall market, there do not seem to be to many ample alternatives to replace Dreesen, which is one of the factors working in his favor should he want to stay and extend his contract beyond next summer. More light will be shed on the matter during the supervisory meeting slated for November 11th.

The German women’s national team returned to Wembley in a rematch of the EURO 2022 Final. This time, the match against England was only an international friendly — but was played as if the stakes were far higher.Bayern Munich stars adorned both sidelines as well as the scoresheet. Giulia Gwinn put the Germans on the board early with two goals (one from the penalty spot) inside 15 minutes, and club teammate Klara Bühl capped things off with a third at the half-hour mark.The rout seemed on, but England answered through Georgia Stanway — another Bayern star — who had her own quickfire brace with goals at the 33’ (P) and 36’ marks.A tense half-time lead carried late into the second half, though the Germans seemed in greater control of the proceedings. After England failed to clear a set piece cleanly, Germany earned another penalty and with Gwinn substituted off by this point Sara Däbritz of Olympique Lyon stepped up to score a fourth for her nation.That was still not the end of the drama, though, with both sides still pushing for more. England delivered through Lucy Bronze, who bundled home after Ann-Katrin Berger unfortunately spilled an easy catch from a deep free kick. From there it was a breathless sprint to the finish — real chances for both sides and England pushing for a once-improbable equalizer to the end. The result held 4-3 for Germany.It was a debut victory for new Germany coach Christian Wück, who has taken over for the interim Horst Hrubesch since the 2024 Summer Olympics, where Germany placed third (the tournament was won by the USWNT). Bayern Munich is a club with many, many legends, to the point where it has its own official Hall of Fame. Not many other clubs can say that. Gerd Müller, Hans-Georg Schwarzenbeck, Sepp Maier, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Klaus Augenthaler, Stefan Effenberg, Philipp Lahm, and Bastian Schweinsteiger are only a few names that are in the Hall of Fame, while other names like Franck Ribéry, Arjen Robben, and Manuel Neuer are very likely to join those ranks in the future.But if one had to pick Bayern’s greatest ever player, odds are he or she would choose Franz Beckenbauer. Der Kaiser was synonymous as Bayern’s biggest legend for the last half century. In fact, he is still considered Germany’s greatest ever player by many fans, not to mention arguably the best defender in football history.But nowadays, Kaiser Franz may finally have a match in the fight for the crown of biggest Bayern legend. A skinny man with all the grace of a deer on ice, yet somehow managed to stay at his boyhood club for over two decades. A man by the rather common name of Thomas Müller. Der Raumdeuter is pretty much the epitome of a Bayern legend, at least to modern fans, especially those who started supporting Bayern in the past decade. His exploits can be defined with the most successful era in Bayern’s club history. But has he caught up to Beckenbauer yet? Let’s try and figure it out.RootsBeckenbauer was born in the war-torn city of Munich itself, and started playing football at his local team SC 1906 Munich. In 1959, he joined Bayern’s youth team, and made his first team debut five years later. At the time, Bayern were not yet part of the newly-formed Bundesliga, but immediately made the jump to the top flight with Beckenbauer’s emergence.Müller, meanwhile, was born just outside the city gates in the small town of Weilheim. He started playing football for TSV Pähl, before making the jump to Bayern’s youth team in 2000. He made his first team debut in 2008, and became a key member of the first team in the following season under Louis van Gaal’s tutelage. In terms of finding who’s more “local” per se, Beckenbauer takes an ever so slight edge because of his Munich roots, but to be quite honest, there’s no real point in judging who bled Bayern from the start, because Müller is as Bavarian as you can possibly get. We’ll call this one a tie.Team AchievementsBeckenbauer captained Bayern to one of the most successful periods in the club’s long and rich history. His most notable achievements include a three-peat of Bundesligas and a three-peat of European Cups, a feat that made Bayern one of the only clubs in European football eligible to keep the actual European Cup trophy. He also won a handful of other trophies with Bayern, including one Müller never even had the chance to compete in - the now defunct UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.As for Müller, his time with Bayern was THE most successful period in club history. Beckenbauer’s Bundesliga three-peat pales in comparison to Müller’s whopping eleven consecutive league titles, which was a first in the top five European leagues. And although a European three-peat wasn’t on the cards for Müller, he remains one of the few players to have ever won two trebles, one of which ended in a historic sextuple. This is without even mentioning the countless other titles he has won so far. Not only that, but he also became the club’s record appearance maker in September 2024, and he keeps breaking that record with every game he plays.In terms of achievements, Müller easily outstrips Beckenbauer in terms of titles won and appearances made. According to a report from Sport Bild journalists Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich is expect to re-engage in talks with Jamal Musiala before the end of the calendar year. At the heart of the matter will be Musiala’s pay. The youngster is looking to go over €20 million per season: The second negotiations round between Bayern and Jamal Musiala will take place before the end of this year. After a good first meeting, Bayern will now present their offer. It is expected that Musiala would become one of the club’s top earners with over €20m gross per year. The club wants to finalize the agreement and make an announcement this year.Assuredly, Bayern Munich wants to get Musiala’s new deal inked as soon as possible. With this season unlikely (at least at this point) to produce European glory, it would behoove Bayern Munich to wrap this up with Musiala quickly before any outside influences can state their case. Vincent Kompany in under some pressure to get a good result here, to show that his team can actually bounce back after a tough defeat. Team newsHiroki Ito, Sacha Boey, and Josip Stanišić continue to work on their comebacks, while Aleksandar Pavlović is out with a broken collarbone. In terms of good news, Jamal Musiala is back, and should be able to start the game. What kind of lineup should fans expect? Well, changes are pretty unlikely. The offense will probably have Harry Kane up top, flanked by Serge Gnabry and Michael Olise, with Jamal Musiala at the attacking midfield position. João Palhinha and Joshua Kimmich likely start in midfield, with the backline suffering no changes. Even though there are generally fewer media working on Saturdays than on weekdays, the low level of media interest in today’s press conference was quite unexpected, especially after the recent negative results.While the VfL Bochum match was supposed to be the focus, most of the questions had to do with the disastrous midweek Champions League loss to FC Barcelona. “I think there are games where things are immediately clear after the game. You can clearly say what happened. It was a game with many moments, not everything we did was wrong, but there were also moments when we were simply unfocused and didn’t take them. In the first half we conceded three goals, which was not ideal, but we were still dangerous. I had the feeling we could still win 4-3 or 5-4. The first half was not a good result, but the belief of the boys was there. In the second half the game changed a bit. We have to say that Barcelona were better. It was a clear defeat,” said Kompany. “I don’t have to talk about every detail. We had a lot of moments, it’s not just about shots and expected goals, but also key moments like in the first half against Barcelona. Sometimes you can take advantage of that because you already have the keys. “At some point, control became less. We must not give up control in the next games. We have to continue to be dominant when possible and get the results from that.”The coach did want to dispel what he considered to be a few myths, including that Bayern Munich’s problems have been similar in each game. “That’s not entirely true. The goals we conceded against Frankfurt were not the same goals as against Barcelona. Ultimately, I wouldn’t just talk about that, because that’s a bit too easy. The responsibility lies with the whole team, not with the individual players. We have the quality. Before the game, you journalists were talking about us conceding the fewest chances in all of Europe. The criticism is now quite normal. But I don’t want to lose sight of what the boys can achieve if they take the necessary steps. Our goal is to take the team further along the way. We should remain objective when it comes to the data,” Kompany noted. ”I’ll come back to the same statistic again, nobody in Europe conceded so few chances. And we played against strong opponents like Frankfurt, Leverkusen, Stuttgart. The basis is that the team works and learns from these moments. It’s normal that not everything was perfect. “We also didn’t win a title last season. Is the basis there for us to find the solution in the future? And we will if the boys continue to pull together. You sometimes forget how they run, fight and play together. Then they’ll always have a chance. I’m totally convinced of the team.”One of the players taking the most heat at the moment is goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, “We lost. When we lose, we lose together, it’s not just Manu, but the whole team and the coaches. That’s important. If Manu changes his game, it’s only to get even better. Bayern Munich has a lot of players whose contracts end in mid-2025 and the club is in the process of sorting everything out. One of the big names on that list is Joshua Kimmich whose status at the club fluctuates every now and then. Right after getting thrashed by FC Barcelona 4-1 in the Champions League, the 29-year-old was asked by a Spanish journalist on a possible move to the Catalans.“I’m not thinking about that. But you should never rule anything out in life and also in football,” Kimmich said (via @iMiaSanMia). He also reiterated that “everyone knows I’m in talks with the club. What I discuss with the club remains internal. I won’t talk about it in a press conference.”Kimmich has been a player that the Blaugrana has been linked to before, but the Rekordmeister is starting to build a reputation for mishandling contract talks. Max Eberl has been a member of Bayern Munich’s board for over seven months, at the time of writing, and his fingerprints are to be found all over Bayern’s recent transfer activity and staff overhaul, hinting at the enormous impact he has had in his short time at the club. “It’s a pleasure for me to be able to make a difference at FC Bayern,” Eberl reflected in an interview for 11 Freunde (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “I’ve learned a lot in the past few years and have emerged stronger from personal crises. Today I can consciously say that football is my life, that I love it. But I know today that there are things that are at least as important. That helps me to do the best possible job here, and I am convinced that we will be successful here. But it has not been an easy path.”But during this short time in charge Bayern has already undergone a tumultuous phase, which took place when the club struggled to replace Thomas Tuchel as head coach at Bayern before eventually settling on relegated Burnley coach Vincent Kompany. Austria head coach Ralf Rangnick and Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann were two of the high profile candidates to reject the Bavarian giants and Eberl offered his thoughts on why that happened.“Some of the coaches we spoke to were going through special phases in their lives,” Eberl explained, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “And from my experience, I fully understand when someone consciously decides to turn down an offer. Even if it comes from FC Bayern.”Eberl was, after all, regarded as one of the most successful sporting directors in Germany during his 13 years at Borussia Mönchengladbach and was heavily courted by Bayern for many of those 13 years, rejecting them time and again. In the 2010s, Bayern Munich made a habit of going to the Middle East over the Bundesliga’s winter break. A short training camp, followed by maybe a friendly match or two, or even three sometimes, was almost considered club tradition. Qatar was the main destination, namely due to the partnership between the club and the country’s flagship carrier Qatar Airways.However, a combination of a global pandemic, increasingly shorter winter breaks, and the termination of said partnership with Qatar Airways has led to Bayern canceling its Middle Eastbound journey. The last time Bayern went to Qatar was in early 2023. Last season, the club didn’t venture to Asia at all, instead making a last-second trip to Portugal for a few days.This year, however, the Bavarians could find themselves back in the Middle East. According to Bild’s Tobi Altschäffl, Bayern are considering a trip to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates this January. The trip is still just a concept, though, as there remain a few factors to consider. One is the feasibility of the resulting workload. This season’s winter break starts on the 22nd of December and ends on the 10th of January, giving the teams just under three weeks to rest. Factoring in the players’ vacations, it remains to be seen whether a trip so far makes sense with so little time. Instead, Bayern could go on another European training camp, as do most Bundesliga clubs.The other factor is the cost. In previous training camps, Qatar Airways partially covered the cost of getting there and back, and staying there. This time, Bayern don’t have a Middle East-based sponsor, so finding someone to pay for the expenses of the trip is the first step. According to Altschäffl, Bayern could look for sponsors in the UAE to help fund their training camp.Should the camp happen, it would be a short, 4-5 day long trip.
