FC Barcelona - Bayern Munich Photo by Sven Hoppe/picture alliance via Getty Images Flick certainly knows the pressure that comes with the Bayern job. In his first match against Bayern Munich since leaving the club in 2021, Hansi Flick and his Barcelona squad utterly embarrassed Bayern with a 4-1 result. Raphinha delivered an electric hat trick and Robert Lewandowski, another Bayern alumnus, scored a goal of his own.Flick was the Bayern manager for two seasons, famously earning the club’s only sextuple. Unsurprisingly, Flick took the high road and specifically singled out his counterpart, Vincent Kompany, for the work he’s done in a short time at Bayern.“Vincent Kompany is doing a very good job,” Flick said (via Sky Sport DE journalist Kerry Hau). “I like watching them. You can feel that they have confidence and enjoy football.”Given the last month of poor results, many pundits have questioned Kompany’s stubbornness in playing the high line. Ironically, Kompany has employed the same high defensive line that Flick also prefers. Unfortunately, Flick’s attackers were more precise in the final third and goes home with three valuable points. FC Barcelona v FC Bayern München - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD3 Photo by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images via Getty Images Not a good look. Bayern Munich spirits are sore now after Wednesday night’s 4-1 Champions League thrashing at the hands of FC Barcelona. The once-positive mood surrounding Bayern’s energetic start to the season has all but dissipated — and not even the execs are immune from the tense atmosphere. Top board member for sport Max Eberl, faced with questions over Bayern’s defensive performances, snapped back at the reporter who asked it — as captured by Az journalist Patrick Strasser.“Get your coaching license, then you can do it better!” Eberl is quoted saying, though we do not know to whom. “It’s so easy to blame the defense when we concede goals. That’s exactly what it is: you want to divide us. We won’t allow that.” A strong defense of the team that might be appreciated in the locker room, or a moment of lost control that will soon result in apology? We’ll see...in any case, in the wake of this shellacking by Barça, it appears the Bavarians are starting to circle the wagons.◆Looking for more thoughts and analysis on how FC Barcelona dismantled Bayern Munich in the Champions League? FC Barcelona v FC Bayern München - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD3 Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images Outplayed and outclassed. The better FCB won. Terrible game by Burnley — wait, that was Bayern Munich?Okay, maybe that’s a little unfair. Still, it’s crazy to think that this was only the THIRD time that FC Barcelona have beaten Bayern Munich in their entire history. Let’s be clear about something. This is not how the game should have gone. There are no excuses here. Just to recap, here is every advantage that Bayern Munich had coming into this game:Injuries: Both teams were not fully fit, but Barça had their starting CBs out injured, and have been without them all season. They’re playing their 2nd choice DM, who is a teenager out of La Masía. Dani Olmo and Gavi weren’t even fit to play.Experience: Barça had a trio of 17-year-olds starting a major Champions League game. They all balled out. Transfers: Bayern Munich spent significant amounts of money to sign João Palhinha and Michael Olise this summer, and they both started the game. Barça barely had the money to buy Dani Olmo, and he wasn’t even fit enough to start. Rest: Bayern played on Saturday evening while Barça played on Sunday night, giving them an extra 24 hours of rest before this game. Barça also have Real Madrid up next (on Saturday!) to worry about, Bayern have Bochum and that too on Sunday. Meanwhile, here’s a list of advantages Barcelona had coming into this game:Home game: Barça got to play at home, though it technically wasn’t even their home stadium. They’re temporarily at the Montjuïc stadium because the Camp Nou is being repaired. That’s it. Frankly, the scoreline looks even more embarrassing when you assess the relative resources of the two sides. Kompany fails every testVincent Kompany has FAILED every single major test he’s faced so far. In three games versus good opposition (Bayer Leverkusen, Aston Villa, and Barcelona) he has managed zero wins, with two goals scored and six goals conceded. That goes beyond the territory of “bad luck”. Frankly, Xabi Alonso will be kicking himself after tonight, because if Leverkusen had come to the Allianz Arena and tried to play on the front foot, they may have gotten a proper result in that game. By playing scared they allowed Kompany to escape that one with a draw. At Villa, Unai Emery showed how a solid defense can consistently leave this Bayern Munich team unable to create chances. Now, Flick has shown that a proper offense can completely expose this team at the back. Which simply shows that ...It’s time to admit, Bayern Munich should have hired Hansi Flick insteadIf there’s anything good to come out of this game, it’s the fact that the majority of terminally online Bayern fans, who probably started watching the team AFTER the 2020 treble, get to see that, yes, Hansi Flick is actually an elite coach who can bring the best out of his players. This is the same Barça team that Xavi had at his disposal, arguably worse because of all the injuries and the fact that Olmo (their only new signing) didn’t even start. Even so, Flick has leapfrogged Bayern Munich and brought Barça back to a point where they are a force to be reckoned with, even in Europe. The player that best exemplifies this improvement is Raphinha. Under Xavi, the 27-year-old winger looked lost, to the point that fans on our SB Nation sister site derisively called him a “fake Brazilian” for his performances. This year, he’s looking like one of the best players in the world, and is leading Barça from the front as its captain. Fans who forgot what Hansi Flick was capable of because they only watched him coach Germany, maybe pay attention to the metamorphosis he’s brought about at Barcelona. Their players look confident, they play attractive football, and despite all the concerns about the “high line” they don’t actually concede that many goals. Which follows on to the next point ...Not all high lines are created equal Media Reddit intellectuals (almost) predicted this. Before the game, it was…

FBL-EUR-C1-BARCELONA-BAYERN MUNICH Photo by JOSEP LAGO/AFP via Getty Images Title shot says it all. Barça did not throw away their shots as Bayern misfired all night. Jersey Swap: RaphinhaTalk about putting your stamp on a game! The 27-year-old Brazilian international had a slow start to his Champions League career, failing to score in his first 10 UCL matches. But the FC Barcelona winger had a blistering start to this one, starting in the first minute and not letting up. Raphinha had put Bayern Munich to the sword with a hat-trick by the time all was said and done.Operating on the left wing in this Battle of the Impossibly High Lines, Raphinha routinely found space in behind, around, and through Bayern’s Raphaël Guerreiro. Where Vincent Kompany’s men fumbled and flubbed their many opportunities going forward, Raphinha took just a few clean looks at goal and buried them all with ice in his veins. Three shots, three on target, three goals. Manuel Neuer and his back-line will be having nightmares about this for weeks to come.Der Kaiser: Dayot UpamecanoTasked with drifting high up the pitch to lock down Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski — and how did that turn out? — Upamecano and Kim Min-jae had their moments introducing the physical side of the game to their opponents. But they also had to deal with a lot of space behind, some of it not even their own to cover. Upamecano in particular was cleaning up on the right flank after Barça’s wingers beat make-shift right-back Guerreiro again and again and again — sometimes getting back in time to make the intervention, and sometimes, as on the third goal, just barely not.The scoreline is not flattering for Bayern’s CB duo but it should be even less flattering to Kompany’s tactics. To the final whistle, Upamecano was doing his best to defend stoutly in the box, and he had plenty of work far up the pitch too. It was a solid effort on a day where the game just ran away from everyone, starting with the coach.Fußballgott: Thomas MüllerWhere was the Bayern midfield? Getting bypassed more often than not. João Palhinha put in some physical challenges high up on the field, but on the ball, the Portuguese international did not offer the up-tempo dynamism Bayern could have used. Nor did Joshua Kimmich, who had a tough match from start to finish — snatching at the air on the opening goal, which came in the first minute, and snatching at Lamine Yamal in the 83rd as the Barça youngster uncorked a delicious cross that Robert Lewandowski probably should have buried for a fifth. So on to the attacking midfield ranks we go.Thomas Müller at least showed some fire in his belly. Barça gave Bayern stunning amounts of space and the Raumdeuter was all over interpreting it. His early cross to Harry Kane was ruled out for offside by the sliver of a knee, and you know what? It was just that kind of day for Bayern. But Müller was one of the only Bayern players that brought the intensity and determination needed to get a result today. That deserves a shout. Also: how badly is this midfield missing Aleksandar Pavlović?Der Bomber: Serge GnabryThis wasn’t a banner day for any of Bayern’s attackers. Faced against Barça’s youngsters, it was Bayern’s more seasoned vets that could not show their composure — loose touches, indecision, and an infuriating inability to stay onside. The Bavarians made a hash of the fresh opportunities Hansi Flick’s ultra-high line presented them throughout much of the first half and parts of the second. This was the chance for Bayern to seize the game, the way the Bayern of old has always done ruthlessly. They let it slip, and even the second-half replacements, Leroy Sané, Kingsley Coman, and Jamal Musiala did not bring their A-game.Gnabry, at least, notched an assist for Bayern’s only goal. But in all the space he had to operate, the German international needed to do a lot better.Meister of the Match: Harry KaneOne goal scored, another narrowly disallowed. Harry Kane could not drag Bayern back into this one but it was not for lack of trying. As…

FC Barcelona v FC Bayern München - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD3 Photo by Alex Caparros - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, FC Barcelona is going to be watching Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies very closely when the teams square off tonight in the Champions League: Alphonso Davies (23 years old) is one of the players that Barça has its eye on due to his quality and the important detail that his contract with Bayern ends next summer. The Catalan club has always liked the Canadian left-back and even more so now that Hansi Flick is the owner of the Barça bench. And the fact is that the Barcelona club has information about Davies, also a target for Real Madrid. Barca, however, is still grappling with the constraints of financial fair play (FFP), which makes every potential acquisition an issue. However, the Catalans are aiming to shed some weight from their payroll after this season to make room for move like the one they are pondering for Davies: At the moment, Barça is pressed by the constraints of fair play, which prevents it from aspiring to many high-profile signings. However, the club is confident that during the current campaign, deals will be closed that will increase its salary capacity. And in this context, Davies is a player who is considered to be ‘top’ and, therefore, would improve the performance of the left-back.One factor that Barça considers to be a major factor is that Hansi Flick coached Davies at Bayern in the sextet and that the German coach converted the Canadian from winger to left back. The club believe that this trust between coach and player could be key to deciding whether or not to renew with Bayern.Could Bayern Munich actually lose to FC Barcelona? What happens if we do? How do the two teams stack up? We discuss those questions and more in the newest episode of our podcast! Listen to it below or on Spotify. As always, we appreciate all the support!

FBL-GER-BUNDESLIGA-BREMEN-BAYERN MUNICH Photo by AXEL HEIMKEN/AFP via Getty Images Vincent Kompany vs Hansi Flick, who will come out on top? Lately, when Bayern Munich have faced FC Barcelona in the Champions League, it seems like there’s always been a reunion of some sort. Last time, it was Robert Lewandowski returning to the Allianz Arena the same season as his summer move to the Catalan capital. This time, it’s Hansi Flick’s turn, with his team hosting the club where he won the sextuple. Bayern Munich have a lot going for it in this matchup. Vincent Kompany has fewer injuries and a relatively more experienced squad at his disposal. If Jamal Musiala returns to the lineup, then alongside Harry Kane and Michael Olise, Bayern Munich are able to field the second highest-scoring trio in Europe at the moment. The thing is, the top scoring trio of the moment — Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Lamine Yamal — will be on the opposing side. Both teams are at the top of their respective leagues. Both teams won by a four goal margin on the weekend. Bayern Munich had an extra day of rest, while Barca have the advantage of playing at home. Both coaches have a lot to prove. It should be one hell of a game. It’s Bayern time. While you’re waiting for kickoff, why not check out our podcast? We talk about how the two teams stack up, whether Lamine Yamal is actually better than Jamal Musiala, how Harry Kane differs from Robert Lewandowski, and more! SV Werder Bremen v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Jürgen Fromme - firo sportphoto/Getty Images Who will Bayern Munich start at wing vs. FC Barcelona? With Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman, and Leroy Sané all available at the wing position to face FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany has plenty of options to choose from. So far, the coach has favored Olise and Gnabry, but the talent level at the position could make it difficult from week-to-week for anyone to establish a stronghold as there will be no room for error. When asked if he has a “pecking order” at the position, Kompany declined to answer, but did say that he keeps an open line of communication with all of this players. “I speak with all my players, always try to be honest with everyone, not make things too complicated with who plays and who doesn’t. We’ll need all the players. The season will be a long one. There’s always more games,” Kompany. No doubt, but it does feel like a matter of time before a player or two becomes dissatisfied with his role. To add more fuel to the fire, Kompany could also use Jamal Musiala at wing if really had the desire, but the coach has been reluctant to use the Germany international at wing so far. Decisions...decisions...Could Bayern Munich actually lose to FC Barcelona? What happens if we do? How do the two teams stack up? FC Bayern Muenchen Training Session And Press Conference - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD3 Photo by M. Donato/FC Bayern via Getty Images What a shame... There was a lot of worry when Jamal Musiala was unable to feature in the Bundesliga against VfB Stuttgart after already missing out on Germany’s international break. Would he be ready for Bayern Munich’s big clash with FC Barcelona? The answer would end up being no, as the German would find himself relegated to the bench as Thomas Müller would line up in his place. Vincent Kompany explained, ahead of the loss, why this decision had to be made: “He only trained twice. He worked very hard. It just wasn’t possible to start today,” Kompany lamented, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “Maybe the right time will come for him [during the match].” Perhaps it will. Perhaps the rising star of the team will be able to come into the match and raise the level of the Bavarians. Bayern will hope that Musiala will not be desperately brought on with the game in the balance, but the strength of the opponent promises this to be a very unlikely scenario...Looking for more thoughts and analysis on how FC Barcelona dismantled Bayern Munich in the Champions League? FC Barcelona v FC Bayern München - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD3 Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images Bayern Munich is missing the “high reward” part of their risky tactics. In the team’s highest profile match of the season, Bayern Munich stumbled out of the gates and never really found a comfort zone. Harry Kane scored twice in the first half, although one of the opportunities was overturned by VAR due to Kane’s kneecap being in an offside position.Barcelona was brutally efficient with its finishing. Bayern captain Manuel Neuer failed to have an effect on the game, conceding a goal on all four shots on target.“Both teams play a risky game so mistakes and ball losses can happen,” Neuer said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We made mistakes, we must be more present and aggressive in midfield because Barcelona have quick players like Raphinha upfront - that was missing today. It’s a point we have to improve. It also must be said that Barça play with a higher intensity than the teams we faced so far.”For the first time in the club’s history, Bayern have lost three consecutive away matches in the Champions League. Vincent Kompany has a tall task ahead of him in getting the squad back on track.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on how FC Barcelona dismantled Bayern Munich in the Champions League? FC Barcelona v FC Bayern München - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD3 Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images That was...not good for Bayern Munich. Bayern Munich travelled to Spain to take on FC Barcelona...but this was not your older brother’s Barca. Hansi Flick had his team aggressive, creative, and relentless (shades of his tenure at Bayern Munich) and maybe most importantly, Flick had his squad prepared to take advantage of Bayern Munich’s iffy backline — and that is exactly what the Catalans did to snare a 4-1 victory. Needless to say, there is a TON to talk about, so let’s do it. Here is what we have on tap for the Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show: A look at the starting XI.A rundown of the scoring and substitutions.Neither coach backed down from their aggressive tactics. Why Bayern Munich’s lack of awareness and discipline on the backline is (and has been a problem). Sepp Maier’s 80th Birthday Special Exhibition Opening Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images Bayern Munich’s legend is amped for this match... Bayern Munich legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has seen his share of battles between his club and FC Barcelona and knows the stakes are high for today’s match. “We have now lost one game, the first game was great, 9:2 against Zagreb. But of course, we are under a bit of pressure after the 0:1 defeat against Aston Villa, so ideally we need to take something in Barcelona and we will try to do that. But they are also under pressure because they lost in Monaco,” saiid Rummenigge (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). One of the reasons that Rummenigge thinks that this version of FC Barcelona is such a threat is because of the influence of former Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick. “First of all, I think that Barcelona is much more stable than in recent years. They are playing better football again, more successful and they are top of the table in Spain. That is thanks to Hansi. Hansi has obviously found and pressed the right buttons. And now they are playing attractive, good football. He is also relying heavily on young players with many exciting new players that he has brought in. And it is working,” said Rummenigge. “Hansi has a very empathetic gift and that has brought the team back this confidence and this success. Hansi is a good coach. If you are not a good coach, you will not win seven titles in a year and a half. He came to Bayern when we were fifth in the table. In the second half of the season we were on an incredible high and ended up just 13 or 16 points ahead of second and third place. He was exactly the right coach at the right time and I am very grateful to him for that. What more could you wish for than what we were able to experience together.”Aside of Flick, Rummenigge is eager to see two, top-class strikers go at it in Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane and FC Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski. “Both are very successful and yet they are very different. Robert joined us on a free transfer in 2014. That was a coup that helped us unbelievably because it brought a goal-scoring machine into our team that was second to none. Robert was a super important player on the pitch and a good guy off it. I have rarely experienced players with whom you could have such authentic, honest and high-quality discussions. He was also an important advisor to me in many situations when things got tough,” said Rummenigge. “We are happy that we have Harry Kane at FC Bayern. It’s not by chance that you score 36 goals in a season that ultimately was not successful from FC Bayern’s point of view. Goalscorers live from their goals, otherwise they are not happy.”Could Bayern Munich actually lose to FC Barcelona? What happens if we do? How do the two teams stack up? FC Barcelona v Sevilla FC - La Liga EA Sports Photo by Urbanandsport/NurPhoto via Getty Images A meeting of the mega-powers is upon us... It is not often that you get a chance to see two powerhouse clubs matching up at the perfect time to determine whether or not what fans have been watching so far this season is real...or just a mirage. Bayern Munich has been mostly good (in fairness, what team doesn’t have flaws at this stage), while FC Barcelona looks completely rejuvenated under Hansi Flick, but has yet to snare a signature win under Flick (at least as of now). Needless to say, the match is important for both teams. Both clubs have explosive attacking groups, solid midfields, and defenses that tend to either be great...or, well, not great. Surely, there are subplots galore...Flick vs. Vincent Kompany, Robert Lewandowski vs. Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala vs. Lamin Yamal (if both players are healthy enough to go), Thomas Müller vs. Barca history, etc. If you want to dive deeper, Barca has — allegedly — expressed interest in Bayern Munich players like Musiala, Joshua Kimmich, Leroy Sané, and Alphonso Davies, while Bayern Munich has — reportedly — long held a fascination with both Pedri and Gavi. Regardless of all of that off-the-field chatter, the game will be played out on the pitch — and fans cannot wait for it. With the constellation of stars on each team and high-profile managers, will it all come together for the kind of exciting match that fans want?Let’s hope so. These chances do not come around all that often in October...and each team could desperately use a win like this to let the rest of Europe know just how “real” they are for this campaign.Could Bayern Munich actually lose to FC Barcelona? What happens if we do? How do the two teams stack up? We discuss those questions and more in the newest episode of our podcast!
