​​16 things you need to let go of if you want to be successful

When it comes to achieving success, there’s a lot of focus on the things that you need to add to your life, like learning a new skill or finding a mentor. The thing is, there will also be times when you need to let go of certain things in your life if you want to achieve success, like the following 16 items.

1. Your bad habits

Whether it’s watching too much TV, not eating a balanced diet, not exercising, or only getting a couple hours of sleep each night, these bad habits sap your productivity. And, if you’re not productive, then how can you become successful?

2. Doing everything by yourself

No matter how intelligent, knowledge, or dedicate you are, you simply can’t do everything on your own. In fact, it’s one of the most common behaviors that block people from becoming successful.

3. Excuses

Successful people don’t point fingers. They don’t blame their economic status, weaknesses, or past failures. They hold themselves accountable. And, instead of making excuses, they focus on what they can do to become more successful.

4. Your SOS (Shiny Object Syndrome)

Being successful isn’t about making money quickly. It’s having the ability to not get distracted by new ideas, trends, fads, or a quick surplus of cash.

5. Band-Aids

Successful people focus on the long-term. They fix the problem because that’s going to positively impact their long-term success.

6. Always showing up late

Arriving early to meetings, appointments, etc. ensures that you don’t run late and it gives you the chance to mentally prepare.

7. Multitasking

Multitasking is a habit which has been proven to actually detrimental to productivity. This is because when we multitask, our brains are shifting focus from one task to another.

8. Approval from others

Don’t waste your time seeking validation from others. It’s time-consuming, drains your energy, and kills your freedom.

9. Your fixed mindset

People with a fixed mindset believe that traits like intelligence or talent are fixed, which means that they can’t change these traits. As a result, they devote their time in documenting these traits, instead of developing them.

10. Hitting snooze

When you set your alarm, you’re making a commitment. You’re committed to waking up at a certain time so that you can get your day started on the right foot. When you hit “snooze” you’re breaking that commitment. What happens next? You then jump out of bed because you overslept and are now rushing out the door. That’s not exactly how you'll want to start your day.

11. Saying "Yes"

Sometimes, even if you feel a bit guilty, you’re going to have to say "no" when you’re asked to help with a certain task or activity.

12. Perfectionism

If you want to make sure that you remain productive, accept that great is good enough so that you can move on to the next task or project.

13. “Hanging out”

While you don’t have to become a recluse, you should spend time with people who are also working towards similar goals.

14. Trying to be clever

Never let your intelligence block you from becoming successful. Use those "smarts" to your advantage, and you can be sure that you’re more honest with yourself when it comes to your strengths and weaknesses.

15. Waiting for luck

Successful people don’t sit around waiting for luck. They go out and work to make their own luck by always being prepared, optimistic, and open-minded.

16. Spending money carelessly

Successful people are known for being frugal. When they do spend money, it’s so that they can make even more money.

No one can do everything all at once to get rid of habits that are sucking your productivity, however, you can take on one or two that you want to get rid of.

​​What Every Woman Needs To Know About Married Men Who Cheat

It’s not always about the evil vixen who only has intentions of stealing a married man. Often times, it’s a sensible, functional woman who slips and falls for a person who is incredibly experienced in manipulation and deception.

There are subtle, insidious ways in which a married man who cheats on a regular basis can seduce a smart woman.

In the beginning, these guys are often friendly, charming, and non-threatening. They might start out making idle conversation and some of them will openly discuss their wives and family seemingly with the pride of a happily married man. Generally, whether you’re a single woman or a woman in a relationship, you won’t think too much of this kind of casual chit chat.

Quite often, this kind of interaction happens in the workplace (which is where it happened with me) but it can also happen in other settings.

Typically, most married men who are serial cheaters begin to groom their intended target by showering them with compliments, acting as a shoulder to lean on, or even going so far as to bring them gifts. Eventually, they’ll find a way to get your phone number, stalk you online, or find some other means to communicate with you on a regular basis.

Most of the time, it’s not important to this kind of guy if the woman is married, in a relationship, or single. There are, however, married men who are looking to aggressively control just one woman as their mistress and will choose a single woman so they can isolate her more easily from family and friends.

The character I became involved with was a serial cheater. I was single and recovering from my divorce at the time. I didn’t find out about his many dalliances until we started talking more. He was very open about it after several conversations. I would even go so far as to say he normalized his behavior as if it was what everyone did.

The main kicker is when this type of man begins to confide in you about how miserable they supposedly are within their marriage. They’ll start to gripe about their spouse in such a way that leads you to believe they are headed for a separation or divorce. They may also complain about their sex like — or lack of — in most cases.

Many men will express a decline in attraction to their spouse, insinuating they’re deprived sexually in some way.

One of the most common tactics a married man who cheats will use is to lie about their current living situation. The most common lie is that they’re sleeping in separate beds or on the couch because they need to stay in the home for some reason. Usually it’s, “for the kids.”

They may also go as far as to say divorce papers are close to being signed (as in my case). Most of the time, this is not the case, and usually they are still sleeping in the same bed with their spouse and are sexually active with them.

Unfortunately, for a lot of women, once they have sex with someone — even if it’s with someone who’s married — they may start falling in love and believe pretty much any lie they’re told. Believe me — I know.

The person I became involved with was a controlling, jealous, manipulative cheater. Though he had engaged in multiple affairs, he didn’t want me to see anyone else outside of our relationship. It sounds insane, but so many women find themselves in this trap.

Finding yourself in a seriously complicated and stressful relationship with no easy way to extract yourself is not a healthy place to be. Affairs can flip from passion to anxiety very quickly. It’s almost never worth it.

The carnage of an affair can last a lifetime. For the most part, married men who are regular cheaters never have intentions to leave their wives. Essentially they want it all — at everyone else’s expense.

​​7 crucial lessons people often learn too late in life

Life lessons are full of wisdom because they often have to be learned the hard way.

However, the hardest part about that process is realizing that sometimes not every opportunity lasts forever. You finally "get it" long after the fact.

If possible, it's best to learn these things sooner rather than later.

1. If you want to 'do what you love,' you have to work three times as hard as everyone else

Most people do not get to spend their lives doing whatever it is they love. Instead, they do what they are told they should do, or what their parents or town or friends or peers suggest that they do.

2. Beneath anger is always fear

Whenever we suffer, especially for long periods of time, at first we believe it is because of something outside of us — something we hate. And if we make it past that emotion, we find below that hate is a rumble of anger, and certainly something we have held on to for far too long.

But beneath all of that is always fear. A fear of loss. A fear of vulnerability. A fear of letting go. But if you can get to the point of acknowledging the fear, you will see its lighthearted shadow, compassion. And you will be able to move forward.

3. Our everyday habits form our future selves

What you do today is one more action toward who you will be tomorrow. When that action is replicated over the course of a week, you begin to scratch the surface of change. When that action is replicated over the course of a month, you begin to notice a slight difference.

When that action replicated over the course of a year, or two years, or five years, you may no longer recognize yourself — you will have changed, in that particular way, completely. Do not underestimate the power of each and every small habit, replicated over time. For good or bad, your habits determine who you will ultimately become.

4. Your emotions take practice

When we think about practice, we often talk in terms of skill. You practice the piano, or you practice playing hockey. But the thing is, who you are emotionally also takes practice. You can practice humility, you can practice forgiveness.

5. Everyone has his or her own agenda

We all have our own dreams, goals, aspirations, families, close friends, and significant others, and we all want the same fundamental things.

There are those you can trust, of course, but the best way to keep yourself rooted and at ease is to know that each and every person has his or her own agenda. You cannot control others. You cannot expect them to put you before themselves. And trying to do so may work for a period of time, but eventually, the truth will rise to the surface.

6. Achievement will never be as fulfilling as the journey

It is one thing to set and goal and enlist the help of others to see its achievement through. It is entirely another to sacrifice your own well-being, and the well-being of those around you, for that goal and its achievement.

The high at the end is never worth the emotional strain that takes place to get there. If you are not able to enjoy the journey with those around you, then the end goal will become meaningless.

7. Working hard and laughter are not mutually exclusive

Building on the previous point, I never understood why people feel that laughing means not taking the matter at hand seriously. The best ideas come through ease. The best flow happens in moments of joy. The human connection begins with laughter and to laugh while working or solving a problem is to be open to new possibilities.

Some people never learn this — they become grumpy and old. But life is about having fun. And to have fun does not mean, by default, that you are not "getting anything done." On the contrary. You can have fun and get more done than you ever thought imaginable.

​​4 Steps to Finally Accomplish Those Goals You Keep Setting

Working toward goals is the way we live our life on purpose and something all successful people do. Setting goals and breaking them, however, is more common than not and the discouragement can cause people to give up on what they want. Every time you set a goal that you don’t achieve, you increase your belief that you won’t be able to accomplish it.

If you are like most people, if you don’t believe you can do something, you aren’t likely to invest much energy in trying. Psychology research, however, has found that the more times you try at something the more likely you are to succeed, particularly if you learn from past attempts and try new strategies.

The research has also shown that there are some specific things you can do as you are setting your goals that increases the likelihood of achieving them.

Below are four important steps that will set you up for success.

1. Make sure you have the right goal

When people use goals to solve unrelated problems they generally lack the proper motivation to achieve the goals. Before you set any goal, ask yourself: Why do I want to achieve this?

2. Be very specific

Many people set goals such as I want to go on vacation or save money. This is a good place to start but in order to be successful you have to get your goal down to a behavioral level where you can take specific actions. This is what you will do to actually accomplish your goal. I am going to stop drinking Starbucks in the morning and put the extra $20 a week in a savings account. You will know your goal is specific enough, when it is measurable. You can measure whether or not you put $20 a week into your savings account.

3. Start small

Starting with the end in mind is an important way to determine what it is you are trying to accomplish and to know whether or not you are on track. Often times however, the end goal can seem so big that it is overwhelms you and causes you to give up too soon or may even prevent you from starting altogether. The more possible your goal seems, the more likely you are to stick with it. Also, the success you feel by achieving the small goals gives you motivation to keep going. If you stay on target with the small goals, you will eventually get to the big goal finish line.

4. Have a plan for the obstacles

You have to have a plan for the goal itself and a plan to get around the obstacles to your plan. Even if someone really knows what they want to do and is highly motivated to achieve it, not dealing with the obstacles can self-sabotage the best of intentions. We tend to be creatures of habit and many times the biggest obstacle to change is our current way of doing something, so we need a plan to do it differently. Spend some time thinking about what the obstacles are to your new goal.

Setting goals and achieving them is the way that we create our life experiences and it is one of the most rewarding things we do. Don’t back away from a goal just because you haven’t achieved it in the past, remember the more times you try the more likely you are to succeed!

​​Addicted To Your Phone? 4 Steps To Regain Mastery Of Your Phone

The University of British Columbia found that people who only checked their emails three times a day versus those who checked it “as often as they could” experienced significantly less stress. Here are some practical tips on how you can regain control of your phone and other digital devices:

1. Go offline at night

Yes, you are allowed to go offline. Really! One time an acquaintance posted a question in a mobile app group. When I woke up, I noticed people had responded between 12am - 4am. It made me wonder how are most people sleeping whilst checking their mobile devices during the wee hours. Not so well is my guess. The reason is checking your phone in the middle of the night causes huge disruptions to your circadian rhythms and the blue light emitted from your phone impairs melatonin production and stimulates your brain to wake up.

How to do this:

Stop using your phone one hour before you sleep.
Turn your mobile data off at night so you don’t get any notifications.
Place your phone beyond an arm's reach at night.
Switch to using an alarm clock versus your phone at night.

2. Do not check your phone first thing in the morning

This is because your mind is very fresh and you can really set the tone of your day with positivity, calmness or whichever way you like. If you check your email, Facebook, Whatsapp, Psychology Today channel and other applications, often you are starting your day with other people’s thoughts, questions, ideas and news. This is disruptive to your creativity, productivity and might even get you in a bad mood before getting out of bed.

How to do this:

Delay checking your phone in the morning by at least an hour.
Agree with yourself a time that you'll check your phone, and stick to it.

3. Give yourself time before checking a notification

This was a hard one for me to give up. I would always find myself immediately wanting to check my phone whenever a notification would come in. I wondered why was I so addicted to this? The reason is, every time a notification comes in your brain gives you a dopamine hit (a happy hormone) which becomes addictive over time. However, along with this addiction comes stress and anxiety. A Future Work Centre study in UK where 2000 employees were surveyed found that email notifications were linked to higher anxiety.

How to do this:

Set a time for when you will check your emails or notifications.
Turn off any notification alerts to reduce the impulsive checking.
Delete any applications, which are stressing you more than serving you.
Delay responses to any notifications.

4. Let your phone go

Give your phone a break! When was the last time you went out with your family or friends without taking your phone? Although many of us feel like we can’t live without our phones, in order to rest and really live in the moment you have to say goodbye to your phone sometimes. This can be hugely empowering for you and eye opening (literally).

How to do this:

Decide which day, time and duration you are going to leave your phone at home.
Inform your loved ones if you think they might worry about you.
Creating new healthy habits with your phone is really not that hard and is a liberating feeling. In fact many of us can recall a time of not having a phone and surviving very well. And remember just like anything in life if you find yourself going back to the old habits you can always start again!

#metoo The Importance of Speaking Our Truth

I debated posting this and seeing the solidarity of all my sisters compelled me to share. And it’s 11:11 as I’m writing this so I feel like it’s a nod from the universe.

I was sexually molested as a child. More or at least equally upsetting to me is the fact that I later found out people suspected sexual abuse was happening.

And yet they didn’t address it.
They chose to sweep it under the rug to prevent conflict.
This, as I’ve come to learn, is way more common than one might think. Denial is a powerful thing. I’m still pissed AF about it.

I felt unprotected.

The abuse followed me like a storm into adult years.
I’m recovering from PTSD and was more or less circumstantially forced into seeking help because the symptoms became so severe.
Almost no one knew.

Today, I continue to navigate flashbacks that are physical, mental and emotional in nature.
At its worst, I found it almost impossible to be in the presence of men without fearing and/or having extreme panic or flashbacks. It was crippling. This significantly impacted my ability to do business/make money.

To speak up.

To set clear boundaries and to know what I wanted.
To support myself on the most basic level.
To understand that I had a right to say no… to sex, to the movies, to men I didn’t want to date but felt obligated to.
I found myself in emotionally abusive relationships with unavailable men. And I always thought they were healthy and available at the start!

My access to help was limited to my financial situation, $10k deductible health insurance, and lack of awareness of what was going on in my body.
And for 90% of my life I didn’t understand what was going on .
I didn’t begin talking about the abuse until a year ago. And it was only when I began to tell my story that other women told me theirs.

Many of us have lived as prey and have suffered greatly in absolute silence. And those that were supposed to protect us, didn’t.

For that I am gravely sorry.

This is, in my opinion, the very definition of systemic oppression. When we’re left for dead. When help is required and yet we are justifiably excluded. Considered a preexisting condition outside of the realm of protection or healing.
And I choose to not let this define me.

I’m incredibly proud of myself for the life I’m creating. I’m a f*cking powerhouse!
Today, thanks to al-anon, awesome friends, excellent self-care and a shit load of inner work, I can finally say I’m in a really, really good place. ð

And it doesn’t change the fact that we have suffered in silence.

That we have suffered, period.
People ask why women/people don’t say NO more loudly? This is one reason why: because we are physically incapable of doing so until we heal the trauma.
Terrified because we don’t believe we have the right to say no.
All living beings deserve help.
So I’m speaking out. For me and for all my people who have suffered. For the forgotten ones. For those who never had a chance to speak out.
Ladies, we got this.
It’s our right to shine.

​​How to Be the Real You. Your True Self Explained (+Actionable Tips)!

Who is the True you? Your True Self is YOU in another consciousness level where you only believe in Abundance, Joy, Love, and Bliss. Your True Self is on a consciousness level where you can see the life of the physical you and overview everything that has happened and potentially can happen.

You are nothing but Love for yourself and everything around you. And the only thing you do is communicate with the you on this physical plane to help YOU (and itself therefore) transform and grow into the True Self that you are.

This communication happens the entire time in the form of hunches, intuition, and emotions. It is You from a higher point of view communicating with yourself in a “lower” level of consciousness.

Where we are, in this physical body and on this physical plane, we can see and sense as much as our physical body can handle. We are limited by our mind and the limiting beliefs we hold onto. But Our True Self isn’t. Our True Self is free from all these limitations.

The only thing your True Self wants for itself (thus for you in this physical body) is to become more of itself (the True Self). So if you want to be your True Self more, start to listen to yourself more and more.

And here’s how to do that.

Everything in your life happens and has happened to help you learn the lessons to become more of your true Self.

The good, the bad, and the ugly have all been there for you to learn to TRUST yourself and to SURRENDER to what’s best for you. Not what you THINK is best for you, but what you FEEL is best for you.

It’s easier to see the benefits of the good stuff in your life, but the bad stuff has benefits as well because that too is in your best interest so you can transform your limiting beliefs about yourself and the world.

Your emotions are your guidance system to become more of your True Self

With your emotions, your True Self is communicating with your physical self, with YOU. When things don’t feel good, they’re not good for you. It’s that simple. If it feels good for you then it’s what’s right for you.

For you to navigate your emotions it’s best to be authentic and honest with yourself. Sometimes something might feel good because you’re avoiding something you’re scared of. In this case, you’re kidding yourself. Be honest with yourself.

Learn to Trust

It is difficult to trust that what’s happening in your life is in your best interest. Especially when these events and experiences are scary or painful. But still, they are in your best interest. They are there for you to learn to trust intuition (Your True Self communicating with you). To follow what’s best for you and not what you THINK is best or what other people THINK is best for you, but what FEELS best for you to do.

Being the real you means trusting yourself. This implies you let go of what you think is right for you and learn to follow what feels good.

Because through your feelings, emotions, and intuition, your True Self, coming from a higher consciousness level, guides you through your life. What our True Self knows from its higher consciousness level is something we can never grasp from our consciousness level in our physical body. That’s why it’s so important to trust your True Self and listen to what feels good for you.

1. They Get Their Happiness from Within

Happiness is a critical element of confidence, because in order to be confident in what you do, you have to be happy with who you are.

2. They Don’t Pass Judgment

Comparing yourself to other people is limiting. Confident people don’t waste time sizing people up and worrying about whether or not they measure up to everyone they meet.

3. They Don’t Say Yes Unless They Really Want To

Confident people know that saying no is healthy, and they have the self-esteem to make their nos clear. When it’s time to say no, confident people avoid phrases such as “I don’t think I can” or “I’m not certain.” They say no with confidence because they know that saying no to a new commitment honors their existing commitments and gives them the opportunity to successfully fulfill them.

4. They Listen More than They Speak

People with confidence listen more than they speak because they don’t feel as though they have anything to prove. Confident people know that by actively listening and paying attention to others, they are much more likely to learn and grow.

5. They Speak with Certainty

It’s rare to hear the truly confident utter phrases such as “Um,” “I’m not sure,” and “I think.” Confident people speak assertively because they know that it’s difficult to get people to listen to you if you can’t deliver your ideas with conviction.

6. They Seek Out Small Victories

Confident people like to challenge themselves and compete, even when their efforts yield small victories. Small victories build new androgen receptors in the areas of the brain responsible for reward and motivation.

7. They Exercise

People who exercised twice a week for 10 weeks felt more competent socially, academically, and athletically. They also rated their body image and self-esteem higher.

8. They Don’t Seek Attention

People are turned off by those who are desperate for attention. Confident people know that being yourself is much more effective than trying to prove that you’re important. Confident people always seem to bring the right attitude.

9. They Aren’t Afraid to Be Wrong

Confident people aren’t afraid to be proven wrong. They like putting their opinions out there to see if they hold up because they learn a lot from the times they are wrong and other people learn from them when they’re right.

10. They Stick Their Necks Out

When confident people see an opportunity, they take it. Instead of worrying about what could go wrong, they ask themselves, “What’s stopping me? Why can’t I do that?” and they go for it.

11. They Celebrate Other People

Insecure people constantly doubt their relevance, and because of this, they try to steal the spotlight and criticize others in order to prove their worth. Confident people, on the other hand, aren’t worried about their relevance because they draw their self-worth from within.

12. They Aren’t Afraid to Ask for Help

Confident people know that asking other people for help won’t make them seem weak or unintelligent. They know their strengths and weaknesses, and they look to others to fill the gaps.
