How Goals Change over Time, and What to Do About It

The other day I was cleaning out my home office, and I found some old notes. The notes were from more than eight years ago before starting this channel. At the time I was planning to undergo some big changes and attempt a new career as a writer.
As I looked through the notes, I smiled in recognition of many of the items I’d listed so long ago. I’d been to about seventy countries then, and was officially beginning  the quest to go to all of them  (193/193). I achieved that goal  almost three years ago .
I said I wanted to write “an important book about purpose.” Whether my books are “important” or not isn’t really for me to say, but I think what I meant was that I wanted to take the writing process seriously. I wanted to create something I was proud of. Since I first set that intention, I’ve written not just one  but   now   four   books .
I wanted to do more speaking and working with groups. I now speak to thousands of people all over the world every year.
There are several other big goals that have either been checked off the list or are still in active progress, which of course is great. But it was also interesting to see that I had completely forgotten about some of the goals I set back then—or if I hadn’t forgotten them, I’d simply decided to let go of them before getting too far along.
For example, at the time I was finishing up my master’s degree in International Studies at the University of Washington. I thought I wanted to go on to earn a Ph.D. and even went through the very time-consuming process of preparing five or six applications. By the time the responses came back several months later (most were rejections), I already had realized that the Ph.D. route wasn’t the best path for me .
I also wrote that I wanted to improve my foreign language skills. Well, they weren’t great at the time… and now they’re even worse. Not only have I not progressed, I’ve actually regressed in my attempts at practicing and studying languages.
I wrote that I wanted to run the Boston Marathon, which requires all runners to qualify at a highly competitive time standard in a previous marathon. I was a decent runner then, but nowhere close to where I’d need to be for “BQ” (Boston Qualifying) time. Since then I’ve continued to run several times a week, and I even  finished one more marathon , but just as my language skills were better eight years ago, so too was my running.
The changes in goals aren’t just about skill, they’re also about interest level. I’ve made peace with the fact that I’ll never be good at languages. I can learn enough to be courteous and polite, but achieving proficiency in multiple languages isn’t a personal goal of mine anymore. The same is true for running: I still love it, but
I don’t love it for a goal. It’s good for me, both physically and mentally, so that’s why I do it.

The point is that some goals have worked out well and others haven’t. When they haven’t, it’s not only because I failed, but just as often it’s because the goal became less important to me over time.
One of the themes of  my new book  is that:
, successful people do not follow a linear path in life. 
They set big goals (and often achieve them) but they also aren’t afraid to change their minds and abandon a goal.

〽️Yes, if you believe in something, you should absolutely pursue it with all your heart and spirit. No obstacle should deter you; in , the obstacles may end up giving you even . motivation to continue. That’s how it was with my “every country” quest.
But if you find your interest waning, maybe it wasn’t the right goal in the first place. Or maybe you’ve just changed, and that’s fine. Life being short, you might as well spend your time working toward something you truly believe in.

The Truth of Me will Set Me Free

Whether you’ve made resolutions consciously, or have simply turned to face a new year, somewhere inside, you are redirecting yourself towards an expanded you: a you closer to the truth of your inner knowing. For most of us though, the resolutions are broken down into the “list.”

There are lots of great ideas on everyone’s list about how to make changes, create new habits, break bad habits, become a “better” person. It is worth paying attention to where this concept of “better” comes from. Is it truly YOUR “better” or is it an old set of messages that don’t really tell the Truth of You.

While it is important to have some good, sound strategies in place for all of the “to do” lists, it is crucial that those lists come from the heart, not from the outer world, not from the all-too-easy-to access “should” world.   
The “should” list is easy to figure out and it runs in your head pretty consistently. The “Truth of Me” list is never the same as the “should” list, though often they will overlap.  Good thing too.

I should look both ways before crossing the street and the truth of me is quite clearly directed towards not getting hit by a car!

What if we knew what we wanted from the Truth of Me? And what if we knew what we should do, using "should" in the highest possible definition: that which we feel morally or ethically obliged to do? And then, what if we knew how to choose, in a way that was a perfect fit for us? No external “shoulds.”  No inner child subpersonalities or inner critics making the choices. No old messages driving our decisions. No unconscious actions taking over. No waffling back and forth till a decision gets made by default. No impulse control disorder. No denial of personal need.
Just, me, my truth and “I”. You, your truth and “YOU”. And from that place of self-awareness and self-knowledge, the place of wisdom and compassion, the place from which intuition springs, we could (on a good day) see all of the possibilities and the Truth of Me could keep breathing and return to the “choice” list, in heart centered clarity.

The Truth of Me aware and chooses . I have my New Year’s resolutions, and if they are helpful, I will attend to them. If they are old, tiresome “shoulds” I will let them go. If they are the Call of my true Self, I will respond, as best I can, accepting and loving myself no matter what.
Now that’s a New Year’s resolution worth working with. It’s 2017 and the Truth of Me is running the show.

As you might have realised my posts are more psychologicall and today I thought it would be a wise idea to tell you how psychology can change your life greatly.

Here are seven ways that learning about psychology can change your life for the better:

1. Increased self- understanding and insight.
This is a no-brainer: By learning about psychological constructs, such as dimensions of personality , we can better understand ourselves, our motives, and our patterns of behavior. Psychological assessments allow us to better know and understand our true selves.

2. Understanding human nature .
Evolutionary psychology helps us better understand our natural urges and internal forces, such as aggression, sexuality , and dominance—the “survival mechanisms” that we must learn to govern and control in order to become more civilized human beings.

3. Overcoming biases.
Social psychology teaches us about biases, such as the in-group, out-group bias, that are at the root of prejudice and discrimination . The Fundamental Attribution Error, for example, explains why we so often place blame on a person and pay less attention to the situational factors that caused a person to behave in a certain way. Clearly understanding our biases in social perception can help us become more empathic and understanding of others, and ourselves.

4. Understanding motivation and goal-setting.
By gaining insight into what motivates us, and by using the well-supported notion of goal-setting, we can learn to accomplish great things, and we can better understand why we strive for the outcomes and goals that we do.

5. Improved communication and empathy.
Learning about topics such as emotional intelligence and nonverbal communication can help us pay attention to the subtle, unspoken cues in others that allow us to connect with them on a deep, emotional level.

6. Becoming a better parent .
There is no doubt that learning something about developmental psychology can help you become a better parent, and raise a more psychologically-healthy child.

7. Becoming a better person.
The positive psychology movement focuses on topics such as happiness , forgiveness , gratitude , and meaning in life. By showing gratitude, understanding what true forgiveness is all about, and building personal character, we become better, more fulfilled individuals.

Business credit is much more than a fix for cash flow challenges—it's a strategic tool that successful companies rely on to grow and thrive. The key is recognizing early enough when you need it, leaving time to secure the funds.

To help you better anticipate a future credit need, here are four examples of when securing financing can strengthen a business.

1. Meeting demand is a strain

If you're too busy to go after all your sales opportunities or provide existing customers with top-notch service, you may need to expand your capacity. Tapping financing could help you buy extra inventory, hire additional staff, upgrade order-taking technology or take other steps to increase your throughput. You could be gaining new customers while better serving existing ones, leading to a positive feedback loop of strong word-of-mouth.

2. The cash cushion is getting thin

The average business owner's cash reserves would over just 27 days of their typical expenses, according to a recent JPMorgan Chase & Co. Institute report .

"If a small business has only that much cash, that's a good indicator that they should look for financing," says Larry Conley, Senior Vice President and national specialty finance manager at JPMorgan Chase. An adequate buffer can help you weather downturns, pay unexpected expenses and take advantage of opportunities such as vendor discounts. Conley recommends seeking a line of credit or a business credit card to complement the cash reserve and extend the buffer to at least 90 days.

3. Your credit card or line of credit balances are consistently high

Carrying high balances on your business credit accounts may hurt your company's credit rating.
For example, if your business has a $100,000 line of credit, and your balance is consistently above $40,000, it may be a sign that you need a long-term financing solution. Taking out a term loan of $40,000 and using the line of credit to cover other expenses that arise could make the debt easier to manage, according to Conley. You would pay off the term loan in predictable, fixed payments over time. Seeking an alternate credit source can also be useful if you're carrying high-interest debt, since it may allow you to pay down the debt at a lower rate. Consider talking with your lender to find an additional credit source to help you better manage your debt.

4. Your business tools can't keep up

Using outdated or inefficient technology or equipment can erode your team's productivity and put you at a disadvantage against competitors. If you're experiencing outages, breakdowns or slowing systems performance, consider whether upgrades could improve quality or output. A number of financing options are available for equipment purchases that allow you to reap productivity gains while conserving cash. The efficiency boost from new tools may also offset the cost of buying them.

Having a clear purpose for capital and taking a proactive approach to obtaining it can help your business grow and compete. Working with a banker who understands your business can help you find the right financing option for your needs.

Why you should stop comparing your finances to friends

It's so easy to give in to the pressure to go along, post along, and purchase along with those around you. After all, you only have one life, so why not live as well as everyone else?

Turns out, the fact that you only have one life to live is exactly why you need to stop comparing your lifestyle and finances to others. Fear of missing out, or FOMO, is a documented phenomenon that has young adults making constant comparisons between their lives and others — and drives them to spend more money on things than they can afford. Here are four reasons why that's the wrong way to achieve your financial dreams.

1. You can't get ahead on a razor's edge
Living paycheck to paycheck isn't fun. But for many people, it's a temporary phase while becoming financially mature. Giving in to splurges to keep up with your friends only extends that period of time. If your goal is to get ahead, don't rush. Living frugally will allow you to set money aside and grow your financial life.

2. You'll end up living someone else's life
You wanted to live big like your friends in a high-paying sector, so you get a job just like theirs. You may be making the money you desire, but if your heart was set on being a teacher, will you ever be happy? Or perhaps your dream is to be a lawyer, but you don't want to trade your weekend trips with friends for tuition bills and all-night study sessions. The ability to buy and do the same things as your friends rarely brings the same satisfaction as following your own goals and priorities. In fact, having a career that is meaningful to you improves personal empowerment and fulfillment, and decreases stress . Make your own decisions, and you'll find your own happiness.

3. Your friends could be making poor choices
Sure, that flashy red sports car projects the perfect image of financial success, but you have no idea how your friend is making it work. He could be so deep in debt, it'll be the last car he ever owns. You're not the only one tempted to overextend yourself financially to keep up with others. Those you're hoping to emulate just might be faking it themselves.

4. Everyone has different priorities
Your friend's budget may allow for two new pairs of Jimmy Choos and three fancy Sunday brunches a month, because those things are important to her. You may make the same salary, but have a goal of paying off your student loan in three years or saving for a down payment on a house. Your goals don't have to be the same as your friend's. Join her for one brunch a month, keep it to a single mimosa, and you'll be celebrating your own financial victories in no time.

When you compare your life and finances to others, you're letting their goals, priorities — and even their mistakes — become your own. Focus on your own aspirations and the right financial decisions will be easier and much more satisfying.

A business in danger of closing can be as stressful for managers and employees as it is for owners and shareholders. Even so, this isn’t the time for panic, anger or frustration. Instead, managers should focus on open communications and maintaining morale, while employees should remain productive for as long as the business remains open while also gathering information necessary for understanding their rights.

Do Not Give Up
In an article for Inc., Steve Tobak, a management consultant and executive coach, writes that working for a floundering company provides opportunities that both managers and employees may never see with a more stable company. For example, a business in trouble may be more willing to listen to innovative ideas, such as repositioning a product in a niche the business can dominate, or enhancing its online capabilities.

Maintain Open Communications
Managers are often stuck in the middle of a difficult situation when a business is going under. Without open, honest communication, uncertainty and fear can erode morale and productivity to the point where it hastens the business’s demise. To beat the grapevine and increase credibility, the Employer’s Association recommends that managers provide timely and accurate information about current developments. To the extent that a business owner allows, a manager can discuss the reasons the business is failing to employees as a group. She can also discuss layoff or termination procedures as a group. One-on-one meetings can then focus on listening to and addressing individual concerns.

Be a Good Employee
Protect your right to collect unemployment by remaining productive for as long as you still work for the company. Although laws in each state determine eligibility for unemployment benefits, the typical rule is that you must lose your job through no fault of your own. Most importantly, this means that no matter how frustrated or angry you might be, do not leave your job before being laid off and do not act intentionally or recklessly against your employer's best interests, such as by violating safety rules or stealing office supplies. If you are fired for something you did wrong, you might not qualify for unemployment benefits.

Understand Your Rights
Employees at all levels have certain legal rights when a business fails, so you should research these rights before the company goes under. If your company has 100 or more employees, for example, the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act says your employer must provide at least a 60-day notice before a mass layoff or closure. If you don’t get this, your employer might be liable for paying you for every day of notice that you didn’t receive.

Prepare to Move On
Continue working to the best of your abilities while you are still employed with the struggling company. In your spare time, however, prepare to transition in the event your company does go under. If your company announces its intention to close on a certain date, it might offer outplacement services such as a resume building or job search workshop. If so, take advantage of these resources. Also, get letters of reference before the company closes and everyone scatters.

Finally, start networking with others in the same industry or take a few classes to strengthen current skills or learn new ones. This will improve your employability once you are on the job hunt again.
