CryptoQuant analyzed crypto exchanges' leverage ratios (open interest vs. reserves) to assess liquidity and default risk. Key Findings:
▪️ Binance: Maintains strong reserves with the lowest leverage ratio among major exchanges (12.8 in Dec 2023 to 13.5 in Dec 2024), despite a 2.6x rise in Bitcoin open interest ($4.45B to $11.64B).
▪️ Smaller Exchanges: OKX also shows low leverage.
▪️ High-Risk Exchanges: Gate, Bybit, and Deribit have leverage ratios of 106, 86, and 32, with open interest exceeding or nearing reserves.
Monitoring leverage is critical, as high leverage contributed to the FTX collapse in Nov 2024, where reserves fell to zero while open interest stayed high.
