*Maersk is back to business in the Red Sea even as competitors remain cautious*

Shares of Danish shipping giant Maersk (AMKBY) - Get Free Report took a hit Thursday following a report that the company would roll the dice and sail the majority of its vessels through the Suez Canal via the Red Sea despite ships of its own being targeted in the region. The company had been redirecting its ships around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, at higher fuel costs, but now it will go back to business as usual, using the Middle East shipping route that it normally does.Related: Oil surges as BP halts Suez traffic amid attacks by Iran-backed rebels The company is scheduling several dozen vessels to travel through the Red Sea in the coming weeks after diverting 26 of its own ships in the last 10 days. About a third of global cargo shipments come through the Suez Canal annually. The cost of re-routing ships around Africa is expected to cost up to $1 million extra per round trip between Asia and Northern Europe, Reuters reported. Last week, the U.S. announced Operation Prosperity Guardian, a coalition featuring the UK, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Bahrain, Canada and Seychelles "with the goal of ensuring freedom of navigation for all countries" passing through the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. But despite the presence of the U.S. Navy, the Bab-el-Mandeb strait that separates the Red Sea from the Gulf of Aden is still dangerous thanks to the civil war in Yemen that has been ongoing since 2014 when rebels, supported by Iran, began an insurgency against the Yemen government. A humanitarian crisis has ensued in the country since the war started, leading to the displacement of more than 4.5 million people with more than 21 million in need of aid, according to the Council on Foreign Relations. The Suez Canal handles about a third of the world's shipping cargo annually. The Houthi rebels have been more active in the Red Sea since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack against Israel, and Israel's subsequent air and ground assault of Gaza. The rebels, who have repeatedly launched missile and drone attacks against ships in the region, have said that they are targeting only ships that are sailing to or from Israel, but they have also attacked ships like Maersk Gibraltar that was neither Israel-owned or traveling to or from the country. Meanwhile, rival Mediterranean Shipping Company confirmed earlier this week that its container ship MSC United VIII was attacked on Dec. 26 while the vessel sailed from King Abdulla Port, Saudi Arabia to Karachi, Pakistan. No crew members were injured and the vessel informed a nearby coalition warship of the attack and "as instructed engaged in evasive maneuvers," to escape the danger. But as a result, the company says that it will "continue to reroute vessels booked for Suez transit via the Cape of Good Hope." German shipping giant Hapag Lloyd has said that the situation is still too dangerous, with a spokesperson telling Reuters this week that it will continue rerouting its vessels around Africa, but will "plan a next review on Friday." Most shipping carriers are expected to avoid the Red Sea, the Washington Post reported, due to the increased using of one-way attack drones and missiles by Houthis to disrupt shipping in the channel. Maersk shares were down nearly 2% at last check Thursday afternoon. Get exclusive access to portfolio managers’ stock picks and proven investing strategies with Real Money Pro. Get started now.

Here is why a major airline just cut dozens of flights

There's a story behind every statistic. People in the airline industry would probably like to forget last year, when consumer complaints to the U.S. Department of Transportation board jumped 55% from 2021 and five times the pre-pandemic levels of 2019.Related: Amazon faces backlash from users over upcoming change to Prime service And it looks like complaints against U.S. airlines will break another record in 2023, according to data analyzed by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.A safety inspection for some Alaska Airlines aircraft triggered last-minute flight cancelations for dozens of Alaska Flights. https://t.co/qfs1y7V2s7— KIRO 7 (@KIRO7Seattle) December 28, 2023 Alaska Airlines (ALK) - Get Free Report recently got some good news when the personal finance company NerdWallet named the Seattle-based air carrier America's most reliable airline for the year, edging out Delta Air Lines (DAL) - Get Free Report.Warnings of 'maintenance issues' NerdWallet reviewed data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics about on-time percentages, cancellation rates, flight diversions, mishandled baggage, tarmac delays and involuntary denied boardings to make the determination. Frontier (ULCC) - Get Free Report was the worst performer among U.S. airlines, while JetBlue finished in second-to-last place. Alaska Airlines (JBLU) - Get Free Report, which announced plans to acquire Hawaiian Airlines (HA) - Get Free Report earlier this month, was buoyed by a second-place finish in on-time percentage and second-lowest cancellation rate. However, the air carrier recently canceled dozens of flights at the last minute due to a safety inspection of some aircraft, according to news reports, which resulted in some disappointed high school students. KIRO-TV in Seattle reported on Dec. 27 that Alaska Airlines employees received an alert warning about “irregular operations,” while passengers got a message saying their flight had been canceled because of “maintenance issues.” However, some passengers flying the day after Christmas didn’t realize their trip was canceled until they were at their gates, including the Kentridge High School girls’ basketball team from Kent, Wash.Airline apologizes They were on their way to Phoenix to compete in a tournament, but they had to miss and forfeit the first game. They also lost their chance to win the tournament. “We’re supposed to play teams from all over the country, like Wisconsin, New York, California,” said freshman Simone Brown. “The best we can do is third place,” Raelyn O’Francia, a Kentridge student told the network. Alaska Airlines apologized to customers about the cancellations. The airline said that the issue that cropped up is rare, but said it got “clarification pertaining to an inspection requirement," and aircraft had to be sent to maintenance yards in Seattle, San Francisco, Portland, and Anchorage. "Our maintenance teams were required to access the data plate information on specific parts, including part and serial numbers to validate compliance with a required inspection. Access to the data is restricted and accomplished using remote visual tools." The required inspection to meet compliance impacted about 10% of Alaska’s fleet. Alaska said the planes checked have all cleared inspection and don’t need any more maintenance. Want to turbocharge your portfolio? Learn from the investing legends and get actionable insights. *Could your travel be affected by the looming storm? Here's what you need to know*

The period between Christmas and New Year's Day is traditionally both a very popular travel period and a time when many parts of the country are at risk of winter storms and other weather-related issues. At the start of the week, a blizzard that began in midwestern states of Nebraska, Kansas and South Dakota steadily moved east and led to flood advisories and thousands of flight delays in cities such as New York and Washington, D.C.Related: These are the worst times to travel during the holiday season Statistics from FlightAware show that over 8,000 flights were canceled across the U.S. on Dec. 26 just as hundreds of thousands of travelers were attempting to get home from Christmas travel. As one of the epicenters of the storm, Denver International Airport was hit particularly hard with over 48% of departing flights delayed and 1% canceled. Cars drive on the highway during a winter storm. Shutterstock Winter storms and flooding hit Midwest but flights are back to normal for now As Southwest Airlines (LUV) - Get Free Report operates a major hub out of the city, the airline had a wave of delays and cancelations reminiscent of the much more severe 2022 post-Christmas fiasco. More Travel:A new travel term is taking over the internet (and reaching airlines and hotels)The 10 best airline stocks to buy nowAirlines see a new kind of traveler at the front of the plane While the Midwestern storm has since slowed down slightly and allowed airlines to restart flights and redirect travelers to their destinations after brief delays, parts of New York, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia are currently under flood advisories. The Flood Watch affects more than 10 million people and, while flights are currently operating as normal, airports are under alert for potential problems if the situation gets worse. As always in the case of bad weather, several airlines reminded travelers to periodically check the status of their flight online to avoid an unnecessary trip to the airport. For the weekend ahead, storms and more heavy rains are predicted for parts of the Pacific Northwest and California. Los Angeles and San Francisco are on particularly high alert for Saturday, Dec. 30. "A band of locally heavy rain lasting for several hours in any one spot will press inland to end the week and start the weekend," Accuweather Senior Meteorologist Heather Zehr said of the forecast. "Rainfall totals will be somewhat limited by the short time frame the precipitation can fall but can still be noteworthy," In or heading to the UK? There are bad storms there too Across the Atlantic Ocean in the United Kingdom, winds of up to 80 miles per hour brought over by Storm Gerrit from the Atlantic pushed International Aviation Group (BABWF) - Get Free Report-owned British Airways to cancel at least 20 flights in London and Bristol airports on Wednesday, Dec. 27. Many of those were flights carrying passengers home from European cities such as Barcelona, Paris and Rome and Aberdeen but many outgoing flights to the same destinations were also canceled. "We have apologized to our customers for any disruption to their travel plans and our teams are working hard to get them on their way as quickly as possible," a British Airways spokesperson said of the changes. A video of a Boeing 777 (BA) - Get Free Report bouncing on the runway while struggling to land in the fog and wind has also been going viral on social media (the pilot landed it safely without any injuries.)

AITA for refusing to give my daughter a kidney because she said she doesn't care if I'm scared?

My (38F) daughter (21F) is suffering from kidney failure. We have been estranged for 3 years, and it was due mainly to the fact that she was taking her health issues, as well as her fights with her dad (38M) and stepmom (31F) out on me. I spent hundreds of my husband " Ethan" (49M) and I's money on making therapy for my daughter but she has remained bitter and difficult. Ethan and I have 2 kids ( 9M and 11M). I had to give up quite a bit in terms of career prospects due to my first pregnancy. My parents also disowned me. But then Ethan helped me get a degree in accounting, and also a real estate license. I have connections from Ethan that are helping me do nearly six figures in real estate commissions and I just joined an accounting firm that hired me based on the client connections I have from Ethan. Now I am working 50 hour weeks but love it because I am finally earning six figures and Ethan's business is also at a place where he can work at home. My daughter at this point was mostly low contact since she turned 18 but now she's back because she needs a kidney. I made the mistake of letting friends know about her situation and everybody I know from my mommy groups from when my daughter was born started dogpiling on me saying " You gotta do this ' mama''" and like I'd be held down to get my kidney. Because of this pressure, despite Ethan saying no, I went to the doctor and found out I was a match. I tried to reach out to my daughter's dad to see if he's a match but her stepmom had apparently already called her screaming that her dad was the provider for her and 3 kids so how dare she ask this of a father. My ex said that his duty was obviously to his wife and minor kids so no testing for him. And so he and everybody else just want it to be my kidney. I tried to communicate to my daughter that I'm afraid of surgery- I was too new to take that much time from work so I'd likely be working while in pain. She replied asking " Doesn't Ethan make a lot of money?" I told her again how risky surgery was and she said, echoing my friends " I don't care- this isn't about you." I was so furious from that conversation that when I went to see the doctor and the doctor asked if somebody was coercing me I told him that at this point I'd rather die than continue to serve my ungrateful rude daughter. I said I indeed felt coerced and if I did it, I'd probably have burning resentment towards the recipient, and the doctors if I woke up in pain. The doctor immediately said I am therefore not a compatible donor and that I should never feel like I'm a prisoner. I told my friends and Ethan this and while Ethan just asked if I was ok and that the boys and him need me, my friends were furious and tried to shame me online with " what kind of mother posts." They are insisting I go back and say I was lying and I've changed my mind. To sign something showing I wasn't coerced and get it notarized if it's what it takes. *U.S. home prices hit all-time high in October*

TheStreet's J.D. Durkin brings the latest business headlines from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange as markets close for trading Wednesday, December 27th.Full Video Transcript Below: J.D. DURKIN: I’m J.D. Durkin - reporting from the New York Stock Exchange. Stocks were in the green to close out today's session. The Dow closed up 111 points, the Nasdaq closed up fractionally, and the S&P closed also closed fractionally higher. Markets are looking to close out the year in the green as the S&P 500 inches toward a record high. Investors are looking ahead to jobless claims out Thursday. This is the final labor report of 2023 and will give markets a clearer picture of how the job market is faring heading into the new year. Turning to real estate - the latest data shows the housing market is still a mess for prospective home buyers. U.S. home prices rose again in October, marking the ninth straight month of increases. Data from the new S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller US National Home Price Index tracked home prices in 2023 from August through October. And, despite interest rates increasing by almost a full percent over the three-month period, historically low inventory continued to drive up home prices by 0.6 percent - and prices are up almost 5 percent year-over-year. As usual, some places have it tougher than others. The new data shows Detroit seeing the largest annual increase at 8.1 percent. It’s followed by San Diego and New York - but coming in at just over a 7 percent gain. The Midwest and Northeast are, overall, the fastest-growing regions in the country. And despite interest rates falling to their lowest level since June, CoreLogic expects home prices to continue to reach new highs in 2024. That’ll do it for your daily briefing. From the New York Stock Exchange, I’m J.D. Durkin with TheStreet.

Higher rents are associated with higher mortality rates

Is high rent hazardous to your health? A new study by Princeton University sociologists and Census Bureau analysts indicates that it may well be. The study appears in the January issue of Social Science & Medicine. As for the numbers, someone whose rent totaled 50% of his/her income in 2000 was 9% more likely to die over the next 20 years than someone shelling out 30% of his/her income for rent, the study says. Those who paid 70% of their income for rent had it even worse, showing a 12% higher likelihood of death than those forking over 30%. We’re constantly reminded of ways in which poor people’s health is threatened more than the rich – from tainted drinking water to lack of access to high-quality medical care. The Silver Lining for Rents When it comes to rents at least, there is some good news. In November, the median U.S. rent fell year over year for the seventh month in a row — 0.6% for studio to two bedroom properties, according to Realtor.com. The median rent of $1,717 dipped $12, or 0.7%, from October. Unfortunately that rent was only $59, or 3.3%, below the record level of $1,776 in July 2022. And it was $313, or 22.3%, higher than the pre-pandemic level four years earlier. Still, “renters are finally catching a break,” said Daryl Fairweather, chief economist of real estate brokerage Redfin. “Better deals are easier to come by because landlords are doling out concessions and rents have started falling in a meaningful way.”Rising Supply In addition, “rising supply means renters have more good options to choose from,” he said. “With homeownership so expensive, renting has started to lose its stigma.” Not everyone expects the positive trend to continue, however. “Permits for new construction are lower, which means that the boom in supply that has brought rents down in some markets will likely slow in 2024, which could put upward pressure on rents again,” Lisa Sturtevant, chief economist at Bright MLS, a real estate information service, told USA Today. The seasonally-adjusted annual rate of residential building permits dropped 2.5% in November to 1.46 million from 1.5 million in October. That includes single-family homes and apartment buildings. So it’s hard to know exactly which way rents are headed.

U.S. home prices hit all-time high in October
