Stocks are looking to build on the year-end rally as hopes of a soft economic landing fuel investor optimism. As it stands, all three major averages are up double digits so far this year, with the Nasdaq leading the way, up 40 percent. Turning to retail - Americans were slated to spend roughly $30 billion on gift cards this holiday season, according to the National Retail Federation. But what happens if you lose a gift card or simply forget you have it? First off, in 2010, the U.S. government enacted a law that states a gift card can’t expire for at least five years from the time of purchase or the time money was added. But some cards from Mastercard or Visa could accrue inactivity fees if they go unused for a year. But if you do forget about a card, the money won’t necessarily be lost - depending on where you live. Nineteen states have laws that require retailers to work with the state to return unspent money from gift cards to consumers. And money that isn’t claimed is spent on public service initiatives, rather than going back to the company. The founder of bakery company Panera Bread, Ron Shaich, has revealed his belief that in the workplace, "it is not a leader’s responsibility to ensure that a person succeeds,” and that servant leadership isn’t about being “nice at all costs,” according to his book "Know What Matters: Lessons from a Lifetime of Transformations." “It is not a leader’s responsibility to ensure that a person succeeds. A leader’s responsibility is to set the expectations and provide the opportunity for individuals to step up and perform, should they choose to do so,” said Shaich in his book.Related: Wayfair CEO sends a harsh wake-up call to employees Shaich, who stepped down as CEO of Panera Bread in 2009, also revealed that he regrets not firing people fast enough from the company. “In fact, one of my greatest regrets or failings as a leader is that I should have fired more people faster,” he said in the book. What apparently stopped him from firing people faster was caring too much about his team’s well-being and believing that “servant leadership” meant treating his team as a family. “Servant leadership isn’t about being nice at all costs. It’s about being helpful at all costs. And radical honesty is a much greater service to people than simply being kind,” he said. Servant leadership is a theory that was introduced in the 1970s that makes the growth and well-being of employees a priority. In his book, he also highlighted his rules for managing a team of people in the workplace, titled “Ron’s Rules for People Management,” where he tells readers to “play favorites,” and to “take care of the people who help you get done what matters.” He also states that the company’s interests should come before an individual’s. “If it comes down to a choice, put the interests of the organization and its stakeholders before individual interests,” he said. He also advises readers in his rules that it is not okay for team members to disagree on a company’s “vision, mission, or values,” and that people should “stay in their lanes and get their jobs done.” "A culture of blaming other individuals or functions accomplishes nothing,” he said. In 2023, the relationship between managers and employees has been distant and lacking trust, according to recent survey data from workplace analytics company Gallup, who polled U.S. employees on their attitudes on leadership and management in the workplace. The survey found that in 2023, only 23% of employees have trust in their organization’s leadership. Also, only 29% of employees strongly agree that their supervisor keeps them informed about what is happening in their company. Gallup also concluded in the report that performance management approaches in the workplace today are “falling short,” with only 22% of employees finding that their performance is managed in a way that motivates them to do “outstanding work.” Investing can be hard. Top analyst says Nvidia stock has room to go even higher in 2024
The proof to many investors that 2023 was indeed the year of artificial intelligence revolves around Nvidia (NVDA) - Get Free Report, the semiconductor firm that sells the computer chips needed to build AI-powered products. Nvidia beat earnings expectations every quarter of 2023 thus far, and its stock has risen in reflection of that; shares of Nvidia are up around 240%, more than triple for the year. The company's third-quarter beat, in which Nvidia posted $18.12 billion in revenue, well above the $16.2 billion expected by analysts, convinced several investors that Wall Street's AI excitement was more than just hype. Related: Human creativity persists in the era of generative AI Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives called the report a "jaw-dropper," and Deepwater's Gene Munster noted that the " case for the AI party to continue through 2025 is compelling." The company said that it expects to see $20 billion in revenue for the current quarter. The rapid growth of Nvidia's stock, according to senior Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon, represents the core worry investors have for Nvidia: longevity. "The numbers are getting so big so quickly you worry about sustainability," he told CNBC. "You can't prove that it won't happen." Still, Rasgon noted that the stock is the cheapest it's been in about a decade, not because of the value it's trading at, but because of its value compared to estimates — "even though (the stock has) gone up, estimates have gone up much, much more," he said. And despite questions of sustainability, Rasgon is "enormously bullish" on the opportunities in AI and accelerated compute that Nvidia provides. The proof to many investors that 2023 was indeed the year of artificial intelligence revolves around Nvidia (NVDA) - Get Free Report, the semiconductor firm that sells the computer chips needed to build AI-powered products. Nvidia beat earnings expectations every quarter of 2023 thus far, and its stock has risen in reflection of that; shares of Nvidia are up around 240%, more than triple for the year. The company's third-quarter beat, in which Nvidia posted $18.12 billion in revenue, well above the $16.2 billion expected by analysts, convinced several investors that Wall Street's AI excitement was more than just hype. Related: Human creativity persists in the era of generative AI Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives called the report a "jaw-dropper," and Deepwater's Gene Munster noted that the " case for the AI party to continue through 2025 is compelling." The company said that it expects to see $20 billion in revenue for the current quarter. The rapid growth of Nvidia's stock, according to senior Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon, represents the core worry investors have for Nvidia: longevity. "The numbers are getting so big so quickly you worry about sustainability," he told CNBC. "You can't prove that it won't happen." Still, Rasgon noted that the stock is the cheapest it's been in about a decade, not because of the value it's trading at, but because of its value compared to estimates — "even though (the stock has) gone up, estimates have gone up much, much more," he said. And despite questions of sustainability, Rasgon is "enormously bullish" on the opportunities in AI and accelerated compute that Nvidia provides. "They are increasingly important, both functionally as well as strategically," he said. Nvidia has an average price target of $661, according to TipRanks. The stock has an average "buy" rating. Shares of Nvidia rose 1% Tuesday to $493.29, not far from its 52-week high of $505.48 notched last month.
