With the end of the year upon us, financial market experts are offering a raft of recommendations for 2024. Morningstar has put together a list of more than 100 of the best companies to own. The firm assigns all these companies a wide moat, meaning it sees them having competitive advantages for at least 20 years. The companies also have “predictable” cash flows and managements that make smart decisions about how they manage and invest their money. Moderna (MRNA) - Get Free Report shares surged Thursday after the biotech and Merck (MRK) - Get Free Report reported encouraging results from an experimental skin cancer vaccine. Shares of the Cambridge, Mass., company at last check were up more than 10% near $87. Shares of Merck, Kenilworth, N.J., were little changed near $107. The companies said that the experimental vaccine, when used in combination with Merck’s blockbuster therapy Keytruda, reduced the risk of death or recurrence of melanoma by 49% in patients in later stages of the disease compared with those who received Keytruda alone after three years. The cancer vaccine in combination with Keytruda also reduced the risk of melanoma spreading to other parts of the body by 62%. The results reinforce midstage trial data the companies released earlier this year. That report showed the efficacy of the combination in the same 157 patients over a shorter period. Earlier trial data found that after roughly two years the vaccine and Keytruda cut the risk of death or relapse by 44% in melanoma patients and reduced the risk of the cancer spreading in the body by 65%. The companies have started Phase 3 trials of the vaccine in combination with Keytruda. The most common side effects of the vaccine after three years were fatigue, injection-site pain and chills.Moderna: 'Robust clinical benefit' Kyle Holen, a physician who is Moderna's senior vice president and head of development, therapeutics and oncology, said in a statement that “we are excited to see such a robust clinical benefit.” “We look forward to sharing these data with people impacted by this disease and the broader scientific community,” he said. Melanoma accounts for only about 1% of skin cancers but causes a large majority of skin-cancer deaths. Rates fell by about 5% per year in adults younger than age 50 and by about 3% per year in those 50 and older. However, the Fed's new Summary of Economic projections, better-known as the dot plots, now suggests the federal funds rate will fall by 75 basis points , or 0.75%, next year, a sharp pivot from recent comments that had indicated a "higher-for-longer" stance. Fed officials see core PCE prices, its preferred inflation gauge, ending this year at 2.8% before easing to 2.4% in 2024, with GDP growth falling to 1.4% after ending this year at 2.6%. U.S. stocks extended earlier gains immediately following the Fed decision and ahead of Chairman Jerome Powell's question-and-answer session with the media. "Certainly, if growth is slowing and inflation is also heading back to target, a few rate cuts will make sense, albeit not quite as much as the five that the market is currently anticipating," she added. U.S. stocks extended earlier gains immediately following the Fed decision and ahead of Chairman Jerome Powell's question-and-answer session with the media. The S&P 500 was marked 53 points higher, or 01.1%, on the session while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 390 points and hit a fresh all-time high of 36,956.51 points. The tech-focused Nasdaq was marked 173 points, or 1.15%, higher. Benchmark 10-year Treasury note yields fell 6 basis points to 4.011% following the interest rate decision while 2-year notes fell 23 basis points to 4.455%. The U.S. dollar index, meanwhile, gave back most of its gains from earlier in the session and was last marked 1.03% lower at 102.830 against a basket of six global currency peers.
