*New independent report reveals details behind Starbucks' issues with workers union*
Starbucks has been facing a public battle with its growing workers union since 2021, and the saga has taken another major step. The coffee giant released a report today that was created by a Thomas M. Mackall, a third-party assessor with years of experience in the labor relations space. The 31-page report that is dated Oct. 13 revealed several issues that seemed to support claims of both Starbucks and Starbucks Workers United about the company's labor problems. One of the biggest takeaways from Mackall's report — which Starbucks issued for in March and was based of studies conducted from July to September — focused on the company's Global Human Rights Statement (GHRS), which Mackall claims fell short in several instances. Page two of Mackall's report read: "As written, the GHRS does no provide meaningful behavioral guidance or a clear basis for compliance regarding freedom of association and effective recognition of the right of collective bargaining." Mackall recommended several changes to the statement, which include clearly defining where the GHRS stands within the company's hierarchy in support of "governance, visibility, and impact."Related: Starbucks releases letter in attempt to resolve issues with workers union Starbucks (SBUX) - Get Free Report released a letter in response to the report, listing the key findings of Mackall that included saying that the company was not fully prepared for the union's arrival due to "challenges created by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic." It also said that there is "no evidence that Starbucks has, or has used, an 'anti-union' playbook" and that the coffee giant "is not opposed to bargaining" with its union. The company added that following the report, it was to improve its GHRS and "embrace a constructive relationship with Workers United."Related: Starbucks Red Cup Day is here — but getting your coffee won't be easy Starbucks Workers United, who are less than a month removed from a union-wide strike during Starbucks' famous Red Cup Day on Nov. 16, responded to the report released by Starbucks in a statement obtained by TheStreet: Today's report, commissioned by and paid for by Starbucks, acknowledges deep problems in the company's response to workers’ organizing — including firings, retaliation, store closings and withholding of benefits from unionized workers. The report shows Starbucks has a long way to go to shift policy and deconstruct the massive anti-union apparatus that remains in place and is active today. Since our Nov. 16 strike, we’ve heard from hundreds of partners across the country who want to organize. Those partners must be able to organize in an environment that is healthy and free from the illegal intimidation that has defined the company’s stance towards its partners over the last two years. Even the report's positive portrayal of Starbucks' bargaining with the Teamsters has been shot down in recent days, with news of an unfair labor practice charge alleging bargaining in bad faith in that instance. If the company’s efforts at dialogue over the last few days are sincere, we are ready to talk. Indeed, we have always been ready. Actions will speak louder than words." *What a soft landing for the economy means for you*
Many experts are coming to believe that the Federal Reserve will engineer a soft landing, where inflation slides toward the central bank's 2% target and the economy doesn’t fall into recession. Goldman Sachs economist Jan Hatzius sees only a 15% chance of recession in 2024 while he predicts GDP growth of 2.1%. GDP gained an annualized 5.2% in the third quarter.Related: What Is a Soft Landing? Definition, Explanation & Example Meanwhile, inflation will dip to a range of 2% to 2.5% by the end of next year, down from 3.1% in the 12 months through November 2023, he predicted. Others are optimistic, too. “What we are expecting now is a soft landing,” Nancy Vanden Houten, lead U.S. economist at Oxford Economics, told The Wall Street Journal. “We expect the economy to weaken quite a bit, but it does look like we’ll avoid an outright contraction.” So what would a soft landing mean for you? While one can never be sure, given the difficulty of predicting financial conditions, the implications appear mixed.Interest Rates: The impact on consumers First, there’s interest rates. Most experts expect the Fed to lower rates next year, starting by May. The idea is that the Fed will want to fight economic weakness and keep inflation-adjusted rates from getting too high as inflation slips. Interest-rate-futures prices indicate a 56% probability that the Fed will cut rates by at least 1.25 percentage points next year. The federal funds rate now stands at 5.25% to 5.5%. What's the impact on you, the consumer? On the minus side lower interest rates mean a decline in yields on your money-market accounts, savings accounts and certificates of deposit. It also would depress yields on bonds you might want to buy. Many money-market funds now yield 5% or more, but that yield will likely drop in a hurry if the Fed cuts rates. On the plus side, a decline in rates would mean lower rates on your loans: mortgage, auto, credit card, student loan and personal loan. That could make a major difference in your finances.Lower rates: Benefits for your investments Another positive could be rising financial markets. Lower rates often boost stocks by buoying the economy and reducing companies’ borrowing costs. So your stocks may gain in value. Falling rates by definition mean lower bond yields and higher bond prices. So if you’re holding bonds you want to sell, you may have a good opportunity. To be sure, if you’re looking to buy bonds, you’ll be buying them with lower yields. One caveat on rates: If the Fed is able to spur a Goldilocks scenario, with moderate economic growth and falling inflation, it might not cut rates much. In that case, these effects cited above would be dulled. If the economy slows substantially, your job opportunities could be depressed. But if economic weakness leads the Fed to cut interest rates significantly, you could experience the pluses and minuses of lower rates. Given all the uncertainty, you might not need to adjust your investment and spending plans now. But you may have to make some adjustments later depending on how it all plays out. *Apple is testing security update to foil thieves*
In recent years Apple (AAPL) - Get Free Report has staked its reputation on the security of its iPhones. Apple has released numerous commercials over the past couple of years touting how secure its phones are and how much the company values the privacy of its users. Related: Apple names top 9 apps of 2023 – here's what made the list And now it is making a change in its newest iOS update that will make their phones even more secure, even if that device is stolen. The move comes after the Wall Street Journal reported on criminals who used iPhone owners' passcodes to change their Apple accounts, access saved passwords, steal money and lock them out of their iCloud.Keeping thieves out of your phone But now, Apple will debut a new Stolen Device Protection setting in its upcoming software update that is supposed to keep thieves out your phone, even if they have your phone. As it stands now, if a person has access to your passcode and can open your phone, they pretty much control your entire Apple account. But with the new Stolen Device Protection button, which users will have to enable, then certain settings will be restricted. If the phone is away from a familiar location, then the device will require facial or fingerprint recognition in order to change an Apple ID password, if the feature is enabled. It will then implement an hour-long delay before the change can be made. After an hour has passed, the user will have to reconfirm with another biometric recognition before the password can be changed. While Apple is allowing the new update to be voluntary, there is a real danger of losing your entire Apple account if a thief steals your phone. If a thief accesses your phone they can enable what is called a recovery key. The key is meant to protect users from online hackers, but in the hands of a thief, it keeps the original user from resetting their Apple ID password with a phone number or email. Apple will be rolling out the feature to all iPhone users with its next iOS update. In the meantime, the feature will be available to beta testers. A flight emergency left passengers in military barracks overnight
It may bring back memories of the 9/11 Gander landing that inspired the Broadway musical "Come From Away" but another plane recently had to land on a Canadian military base after a Delta Air Lines (DAL) - Get Free Report flight going back to Detroit from Amsterdam ran into a mechanical issue while flying over Newfoundland. The Dec. 10 Delta Flight 135 was diverted to Happy Valley-Goose Bay — a small Labrador town of just over 8,000 people that is used as a military base by Canada's Air Force.Related: Watch: A bird collision sets plane engine in flames As passenger Shikha Joshi relayed through her Instagram (META) - Get Free Report stories, 270 passengers aboard the flight were told that the plane would be making an emergency landing in Goose Bay out of "an abundance of caution" after the de-icing tool for one of the engines started acting up. A view of Goose Bay, Newfoundland from an Air Canada plane. Photo by Thierry Tronnel/Corbis via Getty Images. Thierry Monasse/Getty Images 'Delta is looking for accommodations for us all...' The passengers had initially waited on the tarmac for seven hours before being able to board a new plane but delays had exceeded the time flight crews are legally allowed to be on the job — in the U.S., crew duty periods are set at 14 hours and may not exceed nine hours for flights with a single pilot. More Travel:A new travel term is taking over the internet (and reaching airlines and hotels)The 10 best airline stocks to buy nowAirlines see a new kind of traveler at the front of the plane “Boarded a new plane after waiting 7+ hours, waited an hour after boarding for take off only to hear that the crew and pilot have finished their allotted hours of flying and need to rest now for 10-12 hours," Joshi, who was on the flight with her four-year-old son, wrote in the story. "Now Delta is looking for accommodations for us all." Delta also confirmed to media outlets that "crew duty times were impacted due to weather and runway conditions at the Goose Bay airport causing the airport to suspend operations."Passenger description: 'It honestly felt like a hotel' As the area has very few hotels that may not even operate at this time of year, the travelers were housed in the Canadian military's barracks overnight before a new flight was available. Weather in the Happy Valley-Goose Bay area is currently in the 20s. Town officials and the military also helped provide the stranded travelers food and water until the a new flight became available the morning of Dec. 11. Some of the travelers said they were given sandwiches and treats from Tim Hortons, Canada's beloved national donut chain. "It honestly felt like a hotel," passenger Tony Santoro described to a suburban Detroit television station. "It wasn't too bad. We had soap, water, everything." A bus eventually came to pick the passengers up for the rescue flight and the passengers made it back to Detroit before a winter storm came down upon the area in what ended up being 24 hours after their departure from Amsterdam. Delta ended up apologizing for the unforeseen situation and told the affected travelers that they would receive some compensation for the long delay. In the U.S., airlines that face delays of more than four hours for international flights can be required to compensate passengers up to $1,550 per one-way ticket, but this Department of Transportation (DOT) rule generally does not apply to flights delayed due to inclement weather or mechanical issues outside the airline's control.

Apple is testing security update to foil thieves
*A flight emergency left passengers in military barracks overnight*
The passengers had initially waited on the tarmac for seven hours before being able to board a new plane but delays had exceeded the time flight crews are legally allowed to be on the job — in the U.S., crew duty periods are set at 14 hours and may not exceed nine hours for flights with a single pilot.
