While there is a laundry list of items out of your control, certain professional decisions are certainly within your jurisdiction. Penny Pennington, managing partner of Edward Jones, stopped by to explain the decision that defined her career. PENNY PENNINGTON: Well, my husband has this hypothesis that all of our lives come down to eight decisions. And for each of us, they are different decisions. His view is that it's the decisions we proactively make, not the ways that we were born or what we were born into, because we didn't get to make that decision. The decisions that have been most impactful for me are who I partner with.In this case, my husband and my family, Edward Jones: the partner with this organization that has poured into me and that hence I am so driven to help make impactful and successful. It's the partnerships that I make with community organizations that I'm part of, that I'm on the boards of, and so deeply committed to raising the capability of the people who are part of those organizations. So it's these decisions about partnership, I think, that can be very purpose driven. And then make us feel more confident about raising our hands for places that we want to learn more about.

DURKIN: I’m J.D. Durkin reporting from the New York Stock Exchange. Here’s what we’re watching on TheStreet today. Investors are reacting to a fresh inflation report – the Consumer Price Index saw inflation fall to 3.1 percent from 3.2 percent in October, right in line with analyst expectations. While this figure isn’t expected to sway the Federal Reserve’s next interest rate decision, this gives the Fed further insight into the state of the economy. Investors are also looking ahead to the December Fed meeting kicking off today. An official decision on interest rates will be delivered on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Markets are currently pricing in a 98 percent chance that the central bank holds interest rates steady. In other news, Hasbro is laying off 1,100 employees or 20% of its workforce, as it continues to struggle with weak toy sales. This marks the second round of layoffs for the toymaker in 2023 alone after laying off 800 workers in January. But these job cuts don’t come as much of a surprise… Hasbro cut its full-year revenue guidance before the holiday season, which is typically its strongest period. Hasbro’s CFO warned that the company was seeing "broader toy category declines," which it expects to continue into 2024. Elon Musk echoes Warren Buffett in blunt investing claim
Legendary investor Warren Buffett has a number of rules he lives by when it comes to picking stocks and building out a portfolio. Though the first of these is "never lose money," the core of his investing guidelines is simply to understand a business before investing in it. "Your goal as an investor should simply be to purchase, at a rational price, a part interest in an easily-understandable business whose earnings are virtually certain to be materially higher five, 10 and 20 years from now," Buffett wrote in a 1996 shareholder letter. "If you aren't willing to hold a stock for 10 years, don't even think about owning it for 10 minutes." His strategy — which he has been careful to never stray from — essentially amounts to value investing, a practice that usually refers to buying underappreciated stocks at a low price and holding them long-term.Related: Jim Cramer says that Elon Musk has a 'mental condition' In Berkshire Hathaway's 2022 annual report, Buffett highlighted the company's $1.3 billion purchase of 400 million shares of Coca-Cola in 1994. He said Berkshire received a $75 million cash dividend from Coke in 1994, a cash dividend that grew to $704 million as of 2022. Likewise, Berkshire's 1995 purchase of American Express stock resulted in an annual dividend in 2022 of $302 million, up from an initial $41 million dividend. "The weeds wither away in significance as the flowers bloom," Buffett wrote. "Over time, it takes just a few winners to work wonders. And, yes, it helps to start early and live into your 90s as well." Buffett's devotion to that rule of always understanding a business before investing in it led Berkshire to famously avoid investing in Google and Amazon in the early 2000s, because he didn't understand the internet business well enough to invest in it. The Oracle of Omaha said in 2014 that investors ought to look at stocks as businesses: "If you’re going to try to buy and sell them based on news or something your neighbor tells you, you’re not going to do well," he said. "Find a good bunch of businesses and hold them." The NFL Playoffs are about a month away, but it looks as if they will be missing Al Michaels, one of the most iconic voices in the history of NFL broadcasts. Michaels has been removed from the coverage of NBC for the 2024 NFL playoffs, according to a report by the New York Post. Despite his storied career that includes calling 11 Super Bowls, the 79-year-old has faced criticism over the last few years for becoming a more meek and passive broadcaster.Related: YouTube shelled out a lot for the NFL and the early results are finally in The criticism has also coincided with his move from NBC to Amazon Prime Video, where he calls "Thursday Night Football." Amazon does not have the rights to a playoff game for this season. NBC's decision to replace Michaels had already been worked on for a while, but the broadcaster was reportedly unaware and told The Post in November that calling the NFL Playoffs was part of his contract. “It’s in my deal,” Michaels told The Post. “Where are you hearing that from? That’s part of my deal. We don't have flying cars or underwater cities yet, but we've come pretty far in the past hundred years. Consider what the end of 1923 looked like. Prohibition was the law of the land, women were newly minted voters, and the world was still recovering from the horrors of WWI (with the beginnings of WWII brewing). The iPhone 5 was out, complete with its home button and a slightly more 3D app interface. Food delivery existed but not as we think of it now. DoorDash (DASH) - Get Free Report, one of the most popular delivery apps in the U.S., had just been founded. People still ordered mostly by phoning the local pizza or Chinese place. Now, however, food delivery has zoomed, especially in larger cities. Major players, including Uber (UBER) - Get Free Report Eats and DoorDash, compete to gobble up market share and satisfy customers with whatever whims and fancies they might have. In New York alone, DoorDash works with more than 7,100 restaurants. Throughout the U.S., that number balloons to more than 450,000. With all that data on hand, DoorDash compiled a roundup of the most popular foods and other items ordered on its app. And the findings are surprising. DoorDash reveals top items ordered in 2023 Celebrating its 10th anniversary, DoorDash named 2023 its year of milestones. What began as a food delivery app now fulfills orders from drugstores, liquor stores, sporting-goods outlets, and more. Of course, DoorDash's bread and butter is still food.
