Both cruise lines include breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the main dining room, round-the-clock pizza, access to a buffet for three meals a day, and usually at least one or two other free dining options. In the past year, however, both cruise lines have made some major dining changes. Some are positive, like Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) - Get Free Report expanding its late-night menu to offer free choices beyond pizza. It also serves a brunch menu on sea days in the main dining room. The Lido buffet generally has premade food for passengers to serve themselves. This includes eggs, waffles, pancakes, bacon, sausage, cereals, pastries, fruit, and some international offerings. Until recently, Lido also offered a traditional made-to-order omelette station where passengers can pick from a wide array of fillings to customize their omelettes. Carnival has changed that and now will serve a limited selection of omelettes in Lido and in the main dining room. Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald addressed the matter on his Facebook page in response to passenger complaints. "Well, hopefully, you will still be able to enjoy the ham and cheese omelette, which is still available along with a vegetarian. and a plain omelette, a cheese omelette and an egg white omelette as well. Of course, there are so many other great choices for you to enjoy. Thank you so much, breakfast is a wonderful meal and I hope you’re enjoying it on board very soon," he posted. The omelettes are still being made to order; they are now available only in these varieties. Making custom meals takes longer and only so many can be made at a time. In this case, Carnival hasn't stopped making fresh omelettes; it has simply limited passenger's choices. That will certainly disappoint people who want peppers, mushrooms, onions, bacon, sausage, or other options no longer being offered, but it will speed service and make the line move faster. Inflation — inching steadily toward the Federal Reserve's 2% target — has been easing throughout 2023, increasing the odds that the Fed might achieve a "soft landing" for the economy by bringing inflation down without triggering a recession. After peaking at 7.1% in 2022, inflation fell to 3% in November, a month that also saw each of the major indices turn in one of their best months of the year, according to data from Nasdaq. Despite the more bullish stock performance and the consistently falling inflation, Americans remain up against prices that have stayed stubbornly high. "While inflation has come down, broadly speaking, prices have not," Bankrate senior economic analyst Mark Hamrick said in a statement. "There is a kind of continuing, virtual sticker shock that continues to weigh on the minds and pocketbooks of consumers that is meaningful." A Nov. 27 Bloomberg report found that it now costs $119.27 to purchase the same items and services that before the pandemic cost families only $100. The cost of groceries is up 25% from January 2020 levels and rent is up 20%. Easing inflation, while a good sign for the economy, just indicates that prices are growing at a slower rate, not that the prices themselves are dropping. Energy companies — like ExxonMobil and Shell — and food and commodities corporations — like Kraft Heinz — saw profits that have "far" outpaced the inflation that followed the onset of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Tech, telecommunications and finance firms also experienced significant profit increases, according to the report. The price increases across these sectors "exacerbated the initial price shock – contributing to inflation peaking higher and lasting longer than had there been less market power," the report claims. Exxon, for example, reported earnings of $14.3 billion in 2019, before the pandemic and the inflationary environment that followed. The company reported earnings of $55.7 billion for 2022. The report found evidence that some companies, beyond passing on their higher costs to the consumer, actually increased their profit margins, "not only passing inflation on but further amplifying it." "Inflationary shocks cannot be avoided, but they need not persist so long," Chris Hayes, chief economist of Common Wealth, said in a statement. "Our analysis of companies suggests many large firms, beyond just the commodities sector, are using their power to preserve their profit margins. This pushes the shocks downstream to workers, consumers and labor-intensive industries that are less able to absorb them." Such practices, Hayes said, beyond being unfair, have worked to destabilize the economy. “We need a new set of targeted and strategic macroeconomic policies to encourage companies to behave differently and bring down inflation, both now and in the future," he said. While the term "marshal" in aviation is usually associated with the officers disguised as travelers who go on some flights to be able to spring into action in an emergency, the United States Marshal Service is a separate law enforcement agency in charge of complex tasks such as protecting judges, capturing violent fugitives and seizing goods acquired through illegal activities. Brereton was reportedly working in the Eastern District of New York. "The U.S. Marshals Service takes seriously any allegations of misconduct by its employees," the Department of Justice branch said in a statement. "The alleged actions of the employees do not reflect the professionalism of the thousands of employees of the USMS or its core values." While Brereton's status as a marshal helped give this case international attention, there has been a wider increase in the number of bad passenger behavior aboard planes in different countries. An International Air Transport Association (IATA) report published in the summer showed that while there was one such person for every 835 flights in 2021, that number rose to one in 568 flights by 2022. Some of the most common behaviors include verbally abusing flight attendants, fighting with fellow passengers and disregarding anti-smoking and anti-vaping laws. "The increasing trend of unruly passenger incidents is worrying," IATA Deputy Director General Conrad Clifford said in a July 2023 statement on the findings. "Passengers and crew are entitled to a safe and hassle-free experience on board.” In the U.S., the FAA also announced that it would start cracking down on bad passenger behavior with a zero-tolerance policy that could earn even a one-time offender a permanent flying ban.
