Squirrels are known to adopt orphaned pups if the babies are closely related to the adoptive mother, according to research. While adoptions are more common among species that live in extended family groups, they are much less frequent among asocial animals, such as squirrels, which are territorial, live alone, and rarely interact with one another. The study also demonstrates that squirrels can assess their genetic relationship to the pups before deciding whether to adopt them.

Participants in the Antarctic 300 Club wait for a winter day when the temperature drops to −100 °F (−73 °C). This can happen from April to September. Because such cold temperatures may last only minutes, interested parties have to prepare in advance and be ready to act quickly. 300 Club participants spend up to 10 minutes in a sauna heated to 200 °F (93 °C). Then they quickly walk naked to the Ceremonial South Pole wearing only boots. They walk around the marker and return to the station. Participants move fast enough to minimize frostbite but not so fast that they inhale so much cold air that they freeze their airways and lungs; properly clothed bystanders are often present to provide help if needed. After this, participants usually warm up in the sauna again, often with the aid of alcoholic beverages. After joining the 300 Club, members are entitled to wear commemorative patches.

Legend has it that a person who wakes up from a bad dream can call out to baku. A child having a nightmare in Japan will wake up and repeat three times, "Baku-san, come eat my dream." Legends say that the baku will come into the child's room and devour the bad dream, allowing the child to go back to sleep peacefully. However, calling to the baku must be done sparingly, because if he remains hungry after eating one's nightmare, he may also devour their hopes and desires as well, leaving them to live an empty life. The baku can also be summoned for protection from bad dreams prior to falling asleep at night. In the 1910s, it was common for Japanese children to keep a baku talisman at their bedside.

When city officials installed a traffic light with green at the bottom and red at the top, the local Irish community was unhappy with this arrangement. A group of Irish youths, calling themselves the “Stone Throwers,” objected to the color positioning, feeling that the “British” red should not be above the “Irish” green. They threw stones, which they referred to as “Irish confetti,” to break the red bulb.

According to local legend, mice were created to commemorate the tragic death of two workers who were involved in constructing the Monument to the Great Fire of London. The two men were working high above the ground when they took a break for lunch. During this time, one of the men noticed that his cheese sandwich had been nibbled, leaving very little behind. He wrongly accused his friend of eating the sandwich, and an argument ensued, leading to a scuffle that resulted in both men falling to their deaths. It was later discovered that the food had actually been eaten by mice.

After his wife tragically died in 1959 due to an injury sustained from falling off a mountain, and because the mountain blocked easy access to a nearby hospital, Dashrath Manjhi made a life-changing decision. He dedicated himself to carving a 110-meter-long (360 ft) path through a ridge of hills using only a hammer and chisel. After 22 years of hard work, he managed to reduce the travel distance from 55 kilometers (34 miles) to just 15 kilometers (9.3 miles). Though he was mocked for his efforts, Manjhi's work has made life more accessible for the people of his village.

The Axeman of New Orleans was an unidentified American serial killer active in and around New Orleans, Louisiana, from May 1918 to October 1919.

The majority of the Axeman's victims were Italian immigrants or Italian-Americans, leading to the belief that the crimes were motivated by ethnic bias.

A less plausible theory suggests that the Axeman committed the murders to promote jazz music. This idea is based on written correspondence attributed to the killer, in which he claimed he would spare the lives of those who played jazz in their homes.

On March 13, 1919, a letter claiming to be from the Axeman was published in newspapers. In the letter, he stated that he would kill again at fifteen minutes past midnight on March 19, but would spare the occupants of any place where a jazz band was playing. That night, all of the city's dance halls were filled to capacity, as both professional and amateur bands performed jazz at numerous parties across town. There were no murders that night.

In June 1994, Straight's 80-year-old brother Henry Straight had suffered a stroke. At the age of 73 and in poor health from diabetes, emphysema and other ailments, Straight could not see well enough for a driver's license, so he decided his only option was to travel on his 1966 John Deere riding lawn mower.
Setting off in early July 1994, Straight drove the mower along highway shoulders, towing a trailer loaded with gasoline, camping gear, clothes, and food from his home in Laurens, Iowa to his brother in Blue River, Wisconsin.
About four days and 21 into the trip, the lawn mower broke down in West Bend, Iowa. Straight spent $250 on replacement parts, including a condenser, plugs, a generator, and a starter.
After traveling another 90, Straight ran out of money while in Charles City, Iowa. He camped there for a few days until his next Social Security checks arrived in August. He was interviewed by local newspapers. On August 15, Straight's lawn mower broke down again when he was two from his brother's...

During this visit, the bride serves Turkish coffee, sometimes using salt instead of sugar in the groom's cup to test his character. If he drinks it without complaint, she views him as good-tempered and patient. Despite being the one making the proposal, etiquette requires the groom to accept this unique test graciously. Additionally, in some regions, coffee brewed without froth signifies "You have no chance!"
