In November 1980, Vigdis Finnbogadottir, a divorced single mother, became Iceland’s president, making history as Europe’s first female president and the first woman to be democratically elected as a head of state.

Vigdis credits her success to a pivotal event on October 24, 1975, when 90% of women in Iceland went on strike to demand equal rights. This day, known as Women’s Day Off, saw thousands of women take to the streets instead of going to work or managing households.

Vigdis describes this moment as a turning point for women’s emancipation in Iceland, stating, “It completely paralyzed the country and opened the eyes of many men.” The strike resulted in the closure of banks, factories, shops, schools, and nurseries, leaving many fathers to take their children to work.

The director explained: “When we went to shoot in Tokyo, it’s a very different culture. They don’t give out film permits. We would be setting up a scene and people would just walk right through the set. I had this one guy, I thought he said he was me. I didn’t know what that meant.”

“I wanted to shoot in Shibuya, which is the most crowded place in Tokyo. The cops they’re all so polite, so it takes ten minutes for them to come over and kick you out. They shut us down, I’d gotten all my shots, but I didn’t know they were going to arrest me. Another guy stepped up and said, ‘I’m the director.’ I found out that it was his job to take the fall for me. He went to jail for the night and I’m forever grateful.”

The Appian Way, or Via Appia Antica, is one of Rome, Italy’s oldest and most historic roads. Established in 312 BC, it served as an essential link between Rome and the southern regions of Italy.

The road started as a leveled dirt path, which had small stones and mortar laid over it. Gravel was then added on top of this base, and finally, tightly fitting, interlocking stones were used to create a flat surface. The historian Procopius noted that the stones fit together so securely and seamlessly that they seemed to have grown together rather than being simply fitted.

On April 6, 1893, Bowen and Jack Burke fought the longest boxing match in history. Initially, Bowen was set to face another opponent, but when that fighter withdrew, Burke, the original opponent’s trainer, stepped in. The match took place at the Olympic Club where Bowen had previously defended his title.

The fight lasted 110 rounds over seven hours and 19 minutes, with each round lasting three minutes. Some spectators even fell asleep during the event. At round 108, referee John Duffy declared that if there were no winner in the next two rounds, the bout would be ruled a “no contest.” Both fighters became too dazed and exhausted to continue, and Duffy declared the match a no-contest.

Burke broke all the bones in both of his hands and was bedridden for six weeks. He considered retirement but chose to keep competing, while Bowen fought four more times after this historic bout.
