The Chinese Parasol Tree produces edible seeds (may be eaten raw or cooked).
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Daoist Tonic Herbalism, virtually every part of The Parasol Tree has been utilized:
The large exquisite leaves are harvested to extract compounds used to reduce swelling, cool "heat" (in traditional TCM verbiage), and treat high blood pressure. Topically, a tea of the leaves has historically been used to soothe skin irritation and sores.
The inner bark contains a high concentration of mucilage (a thick, gel substance). When soaked in water, it creates a viscous liquid that was traditionally used as a natural hair wash and a binding agent for digestion. This gel was also used as a binder in traditional papermaking.
Because it is a member of the mallow family (my fave: the Malvaceae), its inner bark is rich in incredibly tough, flexible fibers.
* Historically, these fibers were stripped, separated, and woven into durable ropes, cloth, and cordage.
The lightweight, straight-grained resonant wood makes wonderful parts and pieces for musical instruments. The wood resists warping in both dry and humid conditions. The wood is also resistant to insect damage.
Parasol wood has also been used to make lightweight packing crates, furniture drawers, and household utensils.
The Chinese Parasol tree is a rapid-growing, aggressive pioneer species. Ideally, it loves full Sun (these trees in Athens were not getting enough light) and the tree can thrive in poor, compact soils where other trees struggle, which has made it popular for urban plantings. It has a high tolerance for air pollution, smoke, and dust, making it an excellent detoxifier for industrial areas.
Because The Parasol Tree is light and fast-growing, it is susceptible to losing large branches or blowing over during ice storms or high-wind events.
Growing Zones: USDA Zones 7 through 9. It thrives in warm-temperate to subtropical climates.
Cold Tolerance: The Parasol Tree can handle brief winter drops down to about 0°F to 10°F (-18°C to -12°C), but extended, deep freezing or heavy ice will severely damage the smooth, photosynthetic bark.
Growth Rate: Extremely fast. The Parasol Tree can shoot up a meter (3+ feet) per year when young, reaching a mature height of 10 to 15 meters (30-50 feet).
