Hi everyone! I would really appreciate some advice from people working in Data Science, AI/ML, or related tech fields.
My son is starting his junior year in the U.S. and is majoring in Applied Mathematics and Statistics (AMS) with a minor in Industrial Engineering.
He is interested in AI/ML, Data Science, and Operations Research/Optimization, but he is also open to other strong technology/computer-related career paths.
He has considered switching to Computer Science or Data Science, but admission is competitive and space is limited, so even meeting the requirements may not guarantee acceptance.
If switching is not possible, would you recommend staying with Applied Math + Industrial Engineering and focusing on programming, CS/AI/ML courses, projects, research, and internships?
Would adding TSM as a second major be useful, or would an Electrical Engineering minor add more value? Or would it be better to focus on Operations Research/Optimization?
We are also thinking about graduate school. With an Applied Math/Statistics background, which master’s would you recommend for strong tech career opportunities — Computer Science, AI/ML, Data Science, Operations Research, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Statistics, or something else?
I’m also concerned about GPA. Since he is starting his junior year, would it be better to maintain a strong GPA and build relevant skills and experience rather than overload his schedule with another major/minor?
He is not interested in finance, insurance, or quantitative finance. His goal is a strong technology-focused career in the U.S.
If you were in his position, what would you prioritize over the next two years?
