to re-iterate: as of right now, telegram can, from a technical perspective, easily read every single message except those in secret chats. if the messages were e2e encrypted, they could not. hence, there would be no possibility of them simply handing out large amounts of data that's sitting unencrypted on their servers

i think advertising tg as "secure" which has been done time and time again is deceptive, and so is the insistence that tg does not hand out data to governments. if they were truly committed to that, they'd have implemented e2ee by now
