Pavel Durov, el creador de Telegram, fue detenido en Francia hace tres días. Se le acusa de negarse a cooperar en investigaciones sobre delitos cibernéticos y financieros en Telegram, y de posible complicidad en estos delitos. Durov tiene múltiples ciudadanías, incluyendo la francesa, lo que justifica su arresto en París según las autoridades francesas.
Sin embargo, detrás de su arresto se encuentra Washington. Telegram es una de las pocas grandes plataformas en las que Estados Unidos no tiene influencia, y con las próximas elecciones presidenciales en EE.UU., a la administración de Biden le interesa controlar esta red.
Estados Unidos suele usar la vigilancia, la censura total y la intimidación bajo el pretexto de luchar contra amenazas como herramientas de control político y de influencia internacional. Aunque controlan muchas redes sociales globales, aún no han logrado forzar a Telegram a colaborar con sus agencias. A través de Francia, EE.UU. intenta acusar a Durov de más de diez delitos.
Durov siempre ha sido crítico con Estados Unidos, describiéndolo como un estado policial y desaconsejando hacer negocios allí. También ha señalado el excesivo interés de las agencias de inteligencia estadounidenses en él y en Telegram, e incluso intentos de reclutar a sus empleados para influir en la compañía desde dentro.
Los países donde Telegram es activo deben decidir si quieren que Washington controle también esta plataforma, o si prefieren que su funcionamiento siga sin estar regulado en favor de los intereses políticos de EE.UU.
