Microsoft is investing $10 billion in OpenAI, a nonprofit research company that aims to develop and direct artificial intelligence in ways that benefit humanity as a whole. The company was founded by Elon Musk and Sam Altman in 2015.
OpenAI has gained special attention with its popular app ChatGPT, a large language model chatbot, which has been met with great acclaim since its latest release last month.
Agreement details
Microsoft will receive 75% of OpenAI’s profits until it has recouped its investment. When Microsoft makes its money back, the deal will shift to an ownership structure. Under this structure, Microsoft will hold a 49% stake, other investors will have a 49% stake, and OpenAI’s non-profit parent will hold the remaining 2%.
The possible deal, currently the subject of negotiations between the companies, would value OpenAI at $29 billion.

▫️ It also shows the increasing interest in AI among investors and major corporations.

Existing integrations of OpenAI technology in Microsoft products include the GitHub Copilot feature, which gives software developers a virtual AI pair programmer to suggest code and functions as they write programs.
In its turn, OpenAI has benefitted from Microsoft’s computing resources and cloud technology in training its AI models, including an Azure supercomputer announced in 2020 for OpenAI’s exclusive use.
