Lisa's story: One of so many lost as opioids claim Indigenous lives at alarming rate
When Martin Iron Shirt thinks of his sister, Lisa Red Young Man, he immediately remembers one thing in particular: she had an open door policy for those in need.
She didn't have much. But when people came knocking, she would always give.
"She allowed them into her home. Gave them a place to sleep. She was always so friendly and smiling, joking around," Iron Shirt said.

A First Nation in Alberta could soon have its health products delivered by drone
Montana First Nation, located 90 kilometers south of Edmonton, is partnering with Drone Delivery Canada and the Edmonton International Airport to pilot a drone delivery service for medical supplies starting this spring. The initiative aligns with the First Nation's goal of self-sufficiency, particularly in areas like healthcare. Chief Ralph Cattleman highlighted the challenges of accessing medical products and services due to the lack of nearby pharmacies, making it difficult for the community's over 1,000 members. The partnership aims to address this issue by delivering prescriptions and other medical supplies directly to the community's medical clinic in Leduc, enhancing access to healthcare for Montana First Nation residents.

She's left with a concrete slab and $140K out of pocket after conflict with a contractor
An Ottawa-area woman says she's at risk of losing her home, alleging that a dispute with a contractor — now charged with fraud — left her close to $140,000 out of pocket in building costs alone.
Carol Richenhaller sold her house during the pandemic to purchase a small hobby farm in Beckwith Township in eastern Ontario, partly because of the positive impact spending time with horses would have on her daughter's mental health.
It was a bit of an adventure, selling an income property she planned to use as her retirement fund as the two tried to make "COVID lemonade," she said.

Jennifer Jones, a 49-year-old skip, advanced to the final of the Canadian women's curling championship, the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, with a 12-7 semifinal win over Kate Cameron in Calgary. Jones, seeking a record-breaking seventh title, scored five points in the first end and maintained control throughout the game. Cameron, a rookie skip with a new team, played valiantly but couldn't recover from the early deficit. Jones will face Ontario's Rachel Homan in the final. Homan, aiming for her fourth Canadian championship, previously defeated Jones twice in pool play and playoffs. This marks Jones' final season in women's team curling, as she plans to retire after this season.

Lack of snow could lead to summer drought, conservation authority warns
According to Environment Canada, Ottawa has seen 96.7 centimetres of winter precipitation like snow and ice pellets since Dec. 1. Over the same timeframe last year, Ottawa saw 244.5 centimetres. That's put those who monitor the Rideau Valley watershed's conditions on alert.
"We're always worried that the water levels are going to get too high and cause flooding," said Brian Stratton, manager of engineering services for the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority. "But there's also the other extreme, [that] they hardly raise at all. And that's a scenario this year."

Concordia, McGill to take Quebec to court over tuition hikes for out-of-province students
Two English universities in Montreal, McGill University and Concordia University, are launching separate lawsuits against the Quebec government over tuition hikes for out-of-province students. Concordia is seeing a 27 percent decline in applicants from the rest of Canada and a 12 percent decline in international students, while McGill announced a 20 percent drop in out-of-province applicants. Concordia argues that the tuition hikes are based on stereotypes and false assumptions about the English-speaking community of Quebec. McGill and Concordia both argue that the measures constitute discrimination under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and were adopted following an inadequate consultation process. The government initially intended to nearly double tuition fees for out-of-province students but later rolled back the tuition while adding a requirement for students to learn conversational French. McGill is only contesting the tuition hikes, while Concordia is contesting both the hikes and the French language requirement.

US man frustrated with Canadian police after pickup truck stolen in Ontario
Another unsolved auto theft case remains in limbo as a New Hampshire man says his pick-up truck was stolen during a recent visit with his daughter in Ontario.
Though the GPS tracker in the vehicle revealed it ended up in Montreal, police have yet to take steps to retrieve it.
According to police, it is most likely in a container and there aren't enough resources to start searching every single one. "I got the sense it wasn't a priority," Robert Arndt, the owner of the stolen vehicle told Global News. The federal government is investing $15 million specifically to help police forces across the country deal with these types of cases. Global's Elizabeth Zogalis has the latest.

Make sure you have 2 measles shots before you travel on spring break, says Canada's top doctor
Canada's chief public health officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, is urging Canadians to ensure they are fully vaccinated with two doses of the measles vaccine before traveling abroad, citing a global surge in measles activity. The decline in measles vaccinations during the pandemic has contributed to this increase in cases worldwide. While measles is no longer common in Canada, outbreaks can occur when unvaccinated individuals travel to and from affected countries. Measles spreads easily through the air and can cause serious complications, including pneumonia and death. Public health officials emphasize the importance of vaccination for both children and adults to prevent outbreaks and protect against the virus. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted routine vaccination programs, leading to concerns about pockets of under-vaccinated populations. The situation is mirrored in the United States and Europe, where measles cases have also seen a significant rise compared to previous years.

'Freedom Convoy' organizer from Sask. suing federal government for using Emergencies Act to freeze accounts
A main organizer of the "Freedom Convoy" is suing the federal government for using the Emergencies Act to freeze his bank accounts, arguing it breached his Charter rights to protest COVID-19 mandates.
Chris Barber, who owns a trucking company in southwestern Saskatchewan, filed last week a statement of claim in Court of King's Bench in Saskatoon, claiming the federal government's unprecedented move to invoke the act constituted an abuse of power.
"This disruption deprived [Barber and his wife] of the ability to conduct basic financial transactions and live normal lives, leading to severe inconvenience, hardship, embarrassment, exclusion from modern society, and damaged personal and business relationships," says the claim, which also names his wife and trucking business as plaintiffs.

Concerns exist about holdover fires beneath the snow, with one near Paradise Gardens prompting action to cut off oxygen supply. Monitoring efforts focus on areas around Enterprise, Hay River, and Highway 3. Holdover fires are not an immediate risk for communities, but preparations are underway to manage them and respond to potential new fires.
