Prominent Vancouver street given 2nd name in honour of Komagata Maru ship
The City of Vancouver has officially given a second name to Canada Place, a prominent street on the city's waterfront, in honour of the Komagata Maru, a ship carrying hundreds of South Asian passengers that was denied entry to Canada in 1914. The new name, Komagata Maru Place, commemorates the site where the ship docked for nearly two months. The initiative aims to recognize and address the historical injustice faced by the passengers, who were turned away due to Canada's exclusionary immigration policy at the time. The Komagata Maru incident was a result of the Continuous Passage Act, which required immigrants to arrive directly from their point of origin, making it nearly impossible for those travelling from India and Japan. Despite having valid travel documents, most of the 340 Sikh, 27 Muslim, and 12 Hindu passengers aboard the Komagata Maru were denied entry into Canada. The ship eventually returned to India, where some passengers faced persecution by colonial authorities. The street renaming ceremony was attended by city officials, including Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim, who apologized for the city's role in the incident. Descendants of the Komagata Maru passengers expressed gratitude for the recognition and emphasized the importance of educating future generations about this dark chapter in history.

Katz Group launches court battle with Edmonton homeless organization over $5M donation
A subsidiary company of the Katz Group is suing a local agency that provides services to the city's homeless population for breach of contract.
Ice District Corporation, which is a part of Katz Group Real Estate Inc., filed a claim in Edmonton's Court of King's Bench in November, arguing it should be off the hook for a conditional $5-million donation it promised to pay as part of Boyle Street Community Services fundraising efforts for a new location.
The social agency's future home known as King Thunderbird Centre, okimaw peyesew kamik in Cree, and the cost of that relocation, is at the heart of the legal battle.
According to court documents obtained by CBC News, the Katz Group alleges that it shouldn't have to make the donation because Boyle Street didn't try hard enough to fundraise on its own.
Meanwhile, Boyle Street argues in its own filings that the Katz Group is trying to get out of its commitment to help with the relocation now that it has acquired the downtown property it repeatedly offered to buy from the social agency.

Bell Media planning cuts to CTV, BNN Bloomberg following BCE layoffs, sale of 45 radio stations
Bell Media, under BCE Inc., is implementing significant cuts, including the termination of multiple television newscasts and other programming changes. This follows BCE's announcement of widespread layoffs and the sale of 45 regional radio stations. The changes include ending weekday noon newscasts at most CTV stations (except Toronto), scrapping weekend 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts (excluding Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa), and replacing news correspondent and technician teams with "multi-skilled journalists" in certain regions. BCE is cutting nine percent of its total workforce, with fewer than ten percent of job cuts affecting Bell Media. This is BCE's largest round of job cuts in nearly 30 years. Some employees have already been notified of layoffs, with the remainder to be informed by spring. Additionally, Bell is discontinuing certain evening programs on CTV News Channel and streamlining weekday daytime programming on BNN Bloomberg. The documentary series W5 will transition to a multi-platform investigative reporting unit featured across various news platforms.

Ex-mayor Nenshi loathes partisan politics. He may run for NDP leader anyway
Former Alberta justice minister Kathleen Ganley kicked off her bid Monday to lead the NDP, stressing her Calgary roots. By this time next week, Edmonton caucus mates Rakhi Pancholi, Sarah Hoffman and David Shepherd will likely have joined her in the race to replace the departing Rachel Notley.
That lineup of leadership candidates has been reported publicly for some time now, and campaign teams have been quietly jostling for support since at least last autumn. With no clear front-runner, it's shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable and interesting NDP leadership contests anywhere in Canada in some time (they tend to be relatively sleepy affairs with little competition or none at all).
But the intrigue that seems to have gripped NDP-land and parts beyond is whether another figure jumps into the fray and injects even more excitement — one who just delivered his own head-turner of a political speech without formally saying a thing about whether he wants this job.

London, Ont., police apologize to woman in sex assault case involving 5 ex-world junior hockey players
London, Ontario Police Chief Thai Truong apologized for the six-year delay in laying sexual assault charges against five former members of Canada's 2018 world junior hockey team. Truong acknowledged the victim's courage and strength in coming forward, expressing sincere apologies to her and her family. The initial investigation, started in 2018, concluded in 2019 without charges but was reopened in 2022 due to public outcry after Hockey Canada settled a $3.5 million lawsuit. The accused players include Michael McLeod and Cal Foote of the New Jersey Devils, Dillon Dubé of the Calgary Flames, Carter Hart of the Philadelphia Flyers, and former NHL player Alex Formenton, currently playing in Switzerland. McLeod faces an additional charge. Four players are under NHL contracts until the season's end and are on paid leave. The accused attended a procedural court hearing, with the next court date set for April 30. The victim's identity and two witnesses are protected by a court-ordered publication ban.

Ban on several cosmetic surgeries for pets now in effect in Quebec
A ban on four cosmetic surgeries for pets came into effect in Quebec today, putting an end to vocal cord removal, ear cropping, tail trimming and cat declawing for aesthetic purposes. Veterinarians say the non-essential procedures unduly expose animals to risks associated with anesthesia and can lead to behavioural issues.
The Quebec regulation still allows veterinarians to recommend the surgeries for medical therapeutic purposes, and it makes an exception for the ear cropping of stray cats in authorized capture, sterilize and release programs.

Mother in Inuit identity fraud case pleads guilty, charges against daughters withdrawn
Karima Manji, along with her daughters Amira and Nadya Gill, was charged with fraud over $5,000 in September 2023. They were accused of using false information to obtain grant and scholarship money meant for Inuit beneficiaries from the Kakivak Association and Qikiqtani Inuit Association. However, Karima Manji pleaded guilty in a Nunavut courtroom, taking full responsibility for the fraudulent activities. The charges against her daughters were dropped. It was revealed that Manji falsely claimed her daughters were born to an Iqaluit woman and that she was their adoptive mother, enabling them to qualify as Inuit beneficiaries. However, the sisters were actually born in Mississauga, Ontario, in 1998.

Alaskan tribes seek historic legal recognition from B.C. gov't for review of mining project
An Alaska-based coalition of Indigenous governments, represented by the Southeast Alaska Indigenous Transboundary Commission, has applied to participate in a British Columbia environmental review process concerning the proposed revival of the Eskay Creek gold mine by Skeena Resources. Concerns center around potential environmental impacts, with plans to extract up to three million tonnes of gold and silver ore per year over a nine-year period. If successful, this would mark the first instance of U.S.-based tribes being granted participation rights in Canadian environmental reviews, made possible by a 2021 Supreme Court of Canada decision recognizing certain constitutional rights for Indigenous people in the U.S. or Greenland with traditional territories in Canada. Legal experts see this as a significant development following the Desautel decision, suggesting potential impacts of Canadian activities on Indigenous communities across borders.

Yukon skier makes history with 'sensational' upset win at world championship meet
Sonjaa Schmidt, a 21-year-old cross-country skier from Whitehorse, Canada, made history by winning gold at the U23 Nordic World Ski Championship event in Planica, Slovenia. Despite being an underdog and barely qualifying for the quarterfinal heats, Schmidt emerged victorious, impressively sprinting to the front of the pack in the final moments of the race. Her unexpected win marks the first time Canada has secured gold in a U23 Nordic World Ski Championship women's event. Schmidt attributes her success to perseverance, self-confidence, and hard work, having faced setbacks, including being passed over for the national team and losing funding. Working as a tree planter during the summer may have contributed to her physical strength and endurance. Schmidt's victory was celebrated not only by the Canadian contingent but also by representatives from other teams. She plans to continue competing in World Cup races in Finland, Norway, and Sweden after visiting her grandparents in Germany. Schmidt anticipates her performance will earn her a spot on the national team, possibly eliminating the need for another summer of tree planting.

Councillors eye solution to keep community associations insured
Community associations in Ottawa seem poised to win a yearslong fight with the city to replace an inequitable insurance program with one that covers premiums for certain groups based on clear criteria.
The Community Partners Insurance Program (CPIP) is a holdover that saw the city pay for insurance for a list of groups that existed before amalgamation, while negotiating rates for other groups that would bear the cost themselves. The city spent years coming up with a solution to fix the two-tiered system, before deciding the only way forward was to shutter the program and redirect $234,000 in savings toward funding grants.
