❗️In the capital of Zabaikal region, Chita Russian cossacks sang the waltz "On the hills of Manchuria" in honour of Soviet soldiers who defeated the Japanese Kwantung army to being WW2 to a close on this day 80 years ago.

The Soviet operation to liberate Manchuria from the Japanese involved 1,577,725 Soviet troops,
27,086 artillery pieces,
1,152 rocket launchers,
5,556 tanks and 3,721 aircraft.

As agreed with the United Kingdom and the United States at the Tehran Conference in November 1943 and the Yalta Conference in February 1945, the Soviet Union entered World War II's Pacific Theatre within three months of the end of the war in Europe.

The invasion began on 9 August 1945, exactly three months after the German surrender on May 9.
