What does Progress mean?
Progress means deep down to sacrifice the present for the future.
You sacrifice today to live tomorrow; then tomorrow, again it is not tomorrow, it is today; again you sacrifice it for the tomorrow.
The father sacrifices for the children, the children sacrifice for their children, and nobody lives life ever.
One generation sacrifices for another because there has to be progress; and then nobody lives it ever.
There is no need for progress.
The very word ’progress’ moves you into the future. And there can never be an end to it.
You cannot come to a state when you can say: Now the progress has been achieved, because progress is not a thing to be achieved, it is a process.

गिरीशचंद्र घोष बांग्ला के प्रसिद्ध कवि-नाटककार थे। उनके एक धनी मित्र थे। वह अपनी रईसी अपने व्यवहार में भी दिखाते थे। जैसे ही वह कहीं जाते तो उनका नौकर उनके लिए चांदी के बर्तन साथ लेकर चलता था ताकि वह अपना खाना उसी में खाएं।
घोष जी को यह बात अच्छी नहीं लगती थी पर वह मित्र का दिल नहीं दुखाना चाहते थे। तब उन्होंने तय किया कि वह उसकी आदतों को सुधार कर रहेंगे।
एक दिन घोष जी ने अपने रईस दोस्त को खाने पर आमंत्रित किया। हमेशा की तरह उनके मित्र अपने नौकर के साथ पहुंचे। नौकर बर्तन लेकर आया था। लेकिन घोष जी अपने मित्र के आते ही उन्हें और लोगों के बीच ले गए। जब तक मित्र कुछ समझ पाते तब तक उनके सामने पत्तल में खाना परोस दिया। बाकी लोगों के सामने भी पत्तल में खाना रखा था।
तब उनके रईस मित्र संकोच में पड़ गए। उन्होंने नौकर को आवाज देना चाहा लेकिन तब तक सब लोग खाने लगे और उनसे भी खाने का अनुरोध करने लगे। बेचारे को उनके साथ पत्तल में खाना पड़ा। खाने के बाद जैसे ही वे उठे, तो घोष जी उनके बर्तनों में व्यंजन लेकर उनके सामने हाजिर हुए।
उन्होंने हंसते हुए मित्र से कहा- क्षमा करें थोड़ी गलतफहमी हो गई। जब तुम्हारे नौकर को घर की महिलाओं ने बर्तन लेकर आते देखा तो उन्हें लगा कि शायद तुम अपने बच्चों के लिए खाना ले जाना चाहते हो। उन्होंने इसमें खाना दे दिया है। मित्र लज्जित होकर चले गए। उन्हें गलती का अहसास हो गया। उन्होंने प्रदर्शन करना छोड़ दिया।

यहां भाई को हर वर्ष रक्षा-बंधन बांधा जाता है कि ‘हे भैया, साल- भर हमारी रक्षा करना!’..किससे रक्षा करना? भारतीय संस्कृति से रक्षा करना ?? ये चारों तरफ जो धूर्तों का जाल है,इससे रक्षा करना?? यह अपमानजनक है।
कोई सम्मानपूर्ण स्त्री भाई को रक्षा-बंधन नहीं बांधेगी क्योंकि पुरुष से रक्षा की आकांक्षा करना स्त्री की गरिमा को खोना है। मेरे पास कभी कोई आ जाता है कि राखी बांधनी है आपको। ‘किसलिये’? ‘कि आप रक्षा करना। ‘रक्षा की बात ही क्यों उठती है??? रक्षा किससे करनी है? मगर सदियों -सदियों से भारतीय स्त्री को यह सिखाया गया है।
स्त्री को हमने कुल मिलाकर बंद कर रखा है घरों में, कठघरों में। और जब स्त्रियाँ कठघरों में बंद हो जाती हैं और समाज केवल पुरुषों का रह जाता है तब समाज में एक तरह अघोषित सी कठोरता हो जाती है- एक तरह की पुरुषता। क्योंकि पुरुष- पुरुष है, कठोर है। तब समाज में एक तरह की सौम्यता खो जाती है।
तुमने देखा होगा, दस पुरुष बैठे हों और एक स्त्री आ जाये, तो उसके आते ही एक सौम्यता आ जाती है। उसकी मौजूदगी एक मानसिक तरलता ले आती है। उसकी मौजूदगी से ही अगर गाली -गलौच चल रही थी तो बंद हो जाती है। अगर लोग कुछ भी ऊल-जलुल बातें कर रहे थे तो बदल देते हैं। उसकी मौजूदगी एक रूपांतरण लाती है।
जिस समाज में स्त्रियां घरों में बंद हो जाती हैं वह समाज कठोर हो जाता है, जंगली हो जाता है। और इस देश में स्त्रियां घरों में बंद हैं। उन्हें घरों के बाहर लाना है। उन्हें समाज में प्रवेश दिलाना है। उन्हें उनका अधिकार मिलना चाहिए। उन्हें उनकी समानता मिलनी चाहिए। उनका समाज में वापिस लौट आना पूरे समाज के सौम्य हो जाने के लिये बिलकुल जरूरी है। इसी लिए यह अड़चन होती है। ऐसा समाज होना चाहिए कि कोई आधी रात भी घूमे तो घूम सके। यह रात हमारी है, यह चांद हमारा है, ये तारे हमारे हैं।
मगर भारतीय स्त्रियों ने तो सदियों पहले ही यह अधिकार छोड़ दिया है। वे तो पति के पीछे छाया की तरह चलती हैं। वे तो पति की दासी हैं,पति उनका रक्षक है। अकेले घूमने निकलने का तो सवाल ही नहीं उठता। अव्वल तो घूमने निकलने का सवाल ही नहीं उठता- और रात में! यह तो सवाल ही नहीं है। और अगर कभी स्त्री निकलेगी भी दिन की भर – दुपहरी में तो भी पति को साथ लेकर निकलती है, भाई को साथ लेकर निकलती है।
