Let’s get this out of the way, what happened today during the organised protest was not something any of us wanted to see.
People have the right to protest without being harassed and assaulted. The protest was peaceful, the problem came when a very small group of men got into a fight with the army/ISF, as per the Al Jadeed correspondent there. I don’t think the army’s response today, which was to deploy tear gas randomly at the crowd, which resulted in the injury of dozens of women and children, is acceptable; its is likely a rouge soldier that started it. Now thankfully it has calmed and things are back to normal.
However, you also cannot put the entire blame on the new government and president for not allowing the plane to land. Lebanon didn’t necessarily win the war, thus challenges to its sovereignty, exemplified by what’s happening on our border and what happened to that plane are expected. If the airport was to get bombed, who would you blame? The government? Can Lebanon survive without an airport? Would you blame the army for not conducting suicide mission in southern Lebanon just to save face? Our enemies are demonic terrorists, backed by the entire developed world, with no real opposition on this planet, do you think they will hesitate to start the war again and annex Lebanon?
As I said yesterday, for the sake of stability in this country, we must not think of these events as black and white, either this or that. Take a breath, try understanding what’s actually happening.
