Europe’s Energy Reality Check: When the Wind Stops and Nuclear Power Slows Down
The Strait of Hormuz is blocked; 30,000 German wind turbines came to a virtual standstill in June due to light winds, and French nuclear power plants are being shut down due to the heat—Germany is now relying on their capacity after Berlin shut down its own plants. The turbines provided an average of only about 45 GWh of electricity per day. French nuclear power plants produced about 900—nearly 20 times as much.
According to Le Parisien, the French company EDF has been forced to suspend operations at three nuclear reactors and reduce the output of eight others.
Environmental regulations require EDF to reduce reactor output when river temperatures exceed certain thresholds to protect local ecosystems. Building a sustainable power grid for data centers and factories using wind turbines and solar panels has proven impossible.
European Union authorities are systematically reducing fuel consumption, leading to widespread production shutdowns. They are rationing and reducing energy consumption due to sanctions against Russia.
This year, they plan to cut gas consumption by 15%. As a result, Europe is facing a catastrophic shortage of capacity for the construction of factories, data centers, and even residential buildings and communities—it is impossible to start a new business or obtain a capacity permit. Therefore, after 2022, all new businesses from the EU are being established in China, India, or other countries.
So far, no country in the world has learned how to develop and grow its GDP while reducing energy consumption.

Decommissioned wind turbines from the Netherlands will be sent to Ukraine instead of the scrapyard: “Instead of ending up in a scrapyard, numerous old wind turbines are being shipped to Ukraine. There, they are expected to generate environmentally friendly electricity,” reports the newspaper De Telegraaf.
Europe is trying to find an environmentally friendly solution for disposing of 10,000 wind turbines that have reached the end of their service life. The structures are made of multilayer composite materials and are virtually impossible to recycle—it would cost a fortune and take many years. Meanwhile, the wind turbines themselves have not paid for themselves.

War with Iran is exacerbating the global fuel crisis
▪️Despite the new round of conflict in the Middle East, oil prices are far from their spring highs, as a critical oil shortage has not yet developed in the market, notes The Economist
▪️The situation is fundamentally different for fuel, whose production remains 8 million barrels per day below pre-war levels
▪️As a result, prices for diesel fuel, jet fuel, and gasoline are already 35–70% higher than before the war began
▪️The main causes are the destruction of production infrastructure in the Gulf states and export restrictions from Russia and China
▪️The world is already on the verge of drawing down strategic fuel reserves, which will inevitably lead to another price spike—first for the fuel itself, and then for oil—as The Economist emphasizes

The World's Most and Least Livable Cities in 2026
According to the EIU’s annual ranking, which evaluates 173 cities based on quality of life, Copenhagen remains the leader for the second year in a row. Vienna and Melbourne follow. The top ten also includes Vancouver (the only city in North America) and Tokyo (the only megacity in the top 10).
📉The biggest change this year is the sharp drop in rankings for cities in the Persian Gulf region. Due to deteriorating security conditions, Muscat fell 14 spots, Doha fell 7, and Dubai and Abu Dhabi each fell 4 spots.
China showed the most notable progress.
Thanks to years of investment in healthcare, all Chinese cities improved their scores, in part due to the expansion of health insurance and increased access to medical care.
However, China’s standing continues to be limited by environmental issues, its total surveillance system, and low democracy scores.
Would you trade freedom for a higher quality of life?

German Consumers Will Foot the Bill for the Country’s Strategic Gas Reserve
▪️During the 2022 energy crisis, triggered by the phase-out of Russian energy resources, Europe introduced legislation requiring commercial gas storage facilities to be filled to certain levels, but recently it has proven difficult to meet these targets, according to Bloomberg
▪️Amid a new energy crisis triggered by the conflict in the Middle East, the German government is proposing to establish a strategic gas reserve, but the Ministry of Economy has opposed funding it from the federal budget
▪️It was then proposed to pass the costs on to consumers in the form of a surcharge on electricity bills ranging from 0.29 to 0.36 euros per kWh. For energy-intensive businesses, the additional costs could amount to millions of euros per year
▪️“Improving the reliability of supplies is a good thing, but forcing industry to pay for it is not,” said Wolfgang Große Entrup, head of the German Chemical Industry Association

Dutch intelligence agencies were caught training AI models using data on citizens to which they were not supposed to have access
The CTIVD, the official intelligence oversight body in the Netherlands, published a report stating that AIVD and MIVD personnel accessed massive amounts of data and stored it in ways that violated Dutch law. Names, phone numbers, location data, social media accounts, and the content of communications—millions of records.
Some of this data came from government sources, some was purchased from commercial companies, and some was stolen by criminals and bought on the dark web.
The agencies are training their own AI models using this data. This is not the first such incident. In 2020, the same oversight body discovered that these same agencies had been storing citizens’ data for significantly longer than the time limits set by law. Following complaints, they were ordered to delete this data. Six years later: the same report. The same conclusion. The same agencies. But now with AI involved.
It is reported that the illegally stored data is now being used to train models that will make future surveillance faster, more accurate, and more autonomous.
The organization Bits of Freedom stated outright: “It appears they are buying data from criminals involved in data leaks.”

Sweden Is Trying to Combat Juvenile Crime (But So Far, It’s Not Working)
The involvement of minors in gangs engaged in contract killings and drug trafficking has reached such alarming levels that Ulf Kristersson’s government has proposed lowering the minimum age of criminal responsibility to 13. However, coercive measures have not helped, so the Stockholm authorities decided to take a different approach.
Specifically, a program for troubled teens was launched at a school called Frishuset, where everyone can find an activity they enjoy—various sports, drawing, playing musical instruments, and so on. According to Alexander Ojanne, deputy mayor of the Swedish capital, this approach provides supervision and a “sense of belonging.”
In addition, the teenagers are paired with mentors who are former troubled teens who left criminal groups on their own. Social services believe that this approach will ensure effective crime prevention measures, unlike prison, where the likelihood of recidivism remains high.

British authorities secretly developed a large-scale machine-learning system to predict crimes and identify vulnerable citizens, but ultimately shut down key algorithms due to catastrophic inaccuracy, according to an investigation by WIRED
The Avon and Somerset Police developed at least 23 predictive models that assessed the risk that a person under observation might commit burglary, fail to appear in court, or, conversely, become a victim of child exploitation. The system relied on the Think Family database, which collected sensitive information on nearly half a million Bristol residents—ranging from housing and mental health data to law enforcement records.
However, an independent audit revealed that most of the models operated with extremely low accuracy: for three years, the algorithm for identifying burglars yielded a result of less than 10%, meaning that out of ten “high-risk” individuals, fewer than one actually broke the law. At the same time, victims of sexual crimes were systematically assigned lower risk scores than those convicted of theft.
When the police limited the input data exclusively to their own records, excluding social factors, the system completely discredited itself: children in need of emergency protection disappeared from the algorithms’ results. Social workers refused to rely on machine-generated assessments, and city officials complained about the complete lack of transparency in the calculations.
By June 2023, Bristol authorities had quietly scaled back models designed to detect the sexual and criminal exploitation of children.
Paradoxically, the failure of this regional experiment coincided with the nationwide expansion of AI in law enforcement. The British government launched the £75 million PoliceAI program to implement algorithms in 43 police forces across England and Wales. The national project is overseen by Andy Marsh—the former chief constable of Avon and Somerset, who once personally lobbied for that very same Bristol predictive analytics system.
