"After all the battles he fought, the tides shifted, and Mus'ab ibn al-Zubayr came with his massive army. His forces besieged al-Mukhtar in Kufa, at the Governor’s Palace. Al-Mukhtar had 7,000 soldiers with him.
Al-Mukhtar told his men, “We can win. We’re capable of breaking this siege. We can attack Mus'ab’s army, change the equation, and achieve victory.”
But they were tired. Demoralized. Hopeless. Swayed by the enemy’s false promises, promises of safety and security. So they abandoned him.
Al-Mukhtar went out with whoever stayed, three, four, maybe five people. They fought, and he was martyred alongside who stayed with him.
And those 7,000? What did they do?
They surrendered their weapons. Listen closely! Based on the idea that the ruling power, Al-Zubayr’s rule, was one of justice, that it would offer safety and security, that there would be no problem and they would become part of this dominant system ruling the Islamic world at the time.
What happened to them?
In one single day, they were slaughtered like sheep. Their heads were cut off. All 7,000. In a single day. Because they surrendered, refused to fight, and placed their trust in those who should never be trusted when it comes to safety or promises."
