If you care in the least for your home
Where a Russian you were born and bred,
Where your cradle would float along
With a log ceiling overhead,

If you value that home of yours,
All its corners, its walls, the heat
Of the stove and those worn-out floors
Where once trod your forefathers’ feet;

If your garden matters at all,
Its May bloom, the buzzing of bees,
And the table Granddad installed
Long ago ‘neath the linden trees;

If you don’t want a Nazi to
Sit down at that table outdoors,
Ruin the trees your grandfather grew,
And to step on your squeaky floors,

If your mother to you is dear,
Whose breast nursed you when you were weak,
That’s been milkless for many a year,
But against which you press your cheek —

If there’s one thought you cannot stand —
Of a Nazi, lodged at her place,
With her braids wrapped around his hand,
Slapping her on her withered face;

Or those very hands that with care
Put you in your cradle to sleep
Washing that bastard’s underwear
And for him arranging the sheets…

If your father’s memory you keep,
In whose loving arms you would doze,
A good soldier, lost in the deep,
White and wild Carpathian snows;

For the Volga, the Don he died,
For the fate of your homeland, brave,
If you want him in peace to lie
Rather than to turn in his grave,

So no Nazi his cross-adorned
Photograph rips off the wall
And starts trampling him on the floor
With your mother watching it all…

If you don’t want to give away
Her with whom you’d stroll to and fro —
Whom you dare not kiss back in the day
Since you loved the young lady so —

To the Nazis, who’ll tear off her clothes
As the three of them corner her
And then take her alive by force,
Naked, crucified on the floor,

If you don’t want to let those hounds
Amid groans, and hatred, and blood
Get what you’d religiously guard
With all force of your manly love…

If you wish to make sure that no
Nazi takes your mother and wife
And the house where you lived all your life,
All that we call homeland: know:

There is no one to save your land,
No one will if it’s not for you.
Know: there’s no one to kill him, and
That’s a job you yourself must do.

And before you’ve killed him, be quiet
And don’t go about love on and on.
Only killing him grants the right
To call your house and land your home.

Say your brother a Nazi killed,
And your neighbor another, too, —
So it’s them who their task fulfilled,
That’s them getting even, not you.

You can’t sit behind others’ backs
And their rifles for vengeance use.
If your brother a Nazi attacked,
He’s a soldier — you have no excuse.

So do kill a Nazi so he
And not you will lie in the dirt,
And make grieving and weeping be
Not in your, but in his house heard.

That was his fault and his free will,
That was his own choice and his life,
Let his house burn, yours standing still,
Make a widow his, not your wife.

Don’t let your mother shed a tear,
Let the mother that bore him wail,
Let his family, not yours, in fear
Wait for him, but to no avail.

So do kill at least one — brave be!
So do kill — as soon as you can!
And as many times as you see
Him — do kill him again!
