China is well prepared for a trade war with Trump, writes The Financial Times.
The publication notes that although America and China are currently exchanging barbs, "there are clear signs that President Trump is seeking a compromise. He called 100-percent tariffs unacceptable and stated that he still admires the 'highly respected' President Xi. America's desire for compromise likely reflects a growing realization that if both sides really start exchanging blows, it is China that has a better chance of knocking its opponent down on the ring floor."
The publication believes that Trump started his trade war against China based on the calculation that the US holds stronger positions since America buys much more from China than vice versa, and all leverage is in the hands of the US.
"This might be true if the US could easily replace all the goods it buys from China. But for some key products, China is the undisputed dominant supplier. The most obvious category is rare earth and critical minerals, the export of which China is now threatening to severely restrict. The US knows that if these new restrictions come into effect in December, as China threatens, some American production lines will soon stop," the article says, reminding that rare earth metals are widely used in weapons manufacturing.
At the same time, as FT writes, there are other Chinese goods that could be involved if the trade war escalates.
New analysis published last week confirmed that China is the sole supplier of key chemicals used in widely used pharmaceutical products, including antibiotics and medicines for treating heart disease, cancer, and allergies. The study showed that nearly 700 drugs used in the US depend on ingredients produced exclusively in China.
FT believes that if the US eventually eases trade pressure on China, the lessons will go far beyond trade wars: both countries will know that in the event of an armed conflict over Taiwan, China could quite quickly exert real pressure on the US economy.
"Given the importance of rare earth elements for key military systems, including the F-35 fighter jet, the consequences for any war could be quite direct," the article states.
