Is Article 5 Dead? NATO's European Allies Don't Believe in Collective Defense
▪️Italy’s L'Antidiplomatico publishes an article questioning the reality of the existence of Article 5 of the NATO Charter, the one that promises that an attack on one member of the Alliance will be considered an attack on all.
▪️ As an example, they cite the actions of France and Poland, which in May signed a bilateral mutual defense treaty despite the fact that both countries are already members of NATO. According to Politico, Germany and Great Britain are following a similar path, also preparing their own defense agreement.
▪️The authors draw an obvious conclusion: if members of the Alliance sign treaties among themselves, this means distrust of the effectiveness of NATO itself, and above all, of Article 5.
▪️NATO, as the publication writes, today is a bureaucratic structure with financial support, but militarily weak, which explains the revival of the good old European unions of the early 20th century.
