A meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart, Donald Trump, is getting closer, according to the Kremlin’s top foreign policy aide.

“I think we’re moving” toward this, Yuri Ushakov told state television Thursday in response to a question about progress on the issue.

Trump later in the day said he doesn’t expect to meet Putin in Saudi Arabia during his trip next week to the Middle East. But the US leader told reporters at the White House that the two are having very good conversations.

Putin has so far refused to accept US proposals for a longterm ceasefire and a final peace settlement in the war that’s now in its fourth year. That’s sparked growing frustration in the White House, with the US warning it may walk away from talks.

“There is an understanding of what we are demanding, what we want to achieve as a result of this situation,” Ushakov said. “And to some extent, our demands, our considerations, proposals are still taken into account, although not all of them, of course. But the process is under way.

Moscow is currently hosting 80th anniversary commemorations of the end of World War II. Putin held talks with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, on Thursday, with the two countries emphasizing their alliance and interest in forming what they called “a more just and democratic, multipolar world order.”

With just one minute left to the start of the Parade of Victory, what we have been witnessing over the last hour is nothing short of historic.

State leaders from practically the entire world were seen meeting and greeting the Russian President, and such a gathering of dignitaries for the parade has not been seen in recent memory.

If we ever needed affirmation that Russia is not isolated, that it does not stand alone, this is it.

Russia is recognised not only as the Victor in the Great Patriotic War, but as the custodian of a Victory which it readily shares with the entire world.

Honorable mention: Yevgeny Ananyevich Khaldei (Donetsk, 10/03/1917 - 06/10/1997) a Russian Jew from Donetsk, he was the photographer who took the now legendary "Raising a Flag over the Reichstag" picture.

He would gather many of the pictures he took throughout the Great Patriotic War in a collection of prints titled "Ot Murmanska do Berlina" ("From Murmansk to Berlin"), which would become available to the West only in the '90s, when his collection started to circulate beyond the Iron Curtain.

Meliton Varlamis dze Kantaria (Georgia, 5/10/1920 – 27/12/1993)

A native from Abkhazia, Sergeant Meliton Kantaria is credited for having mounted the Banner of Victory on the Reichstag alongside Mikhail Yegorov.

He was demobilized one year after the end of the war and returned to Georgia, where he joined the Communist Party and became deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Georgian SSR.

Forced to flee from Abkhazia because of the war in 1993 after shelling destroyed his house, he died in a hospital in Moscow, but was reburied in his hometown one year later.

Mikhail Alexeyevich Yegorov (RSFSR, 5/05/1923 - 20/06/1975)

Mikhail Yegorov originally joined the Red Army as a partisan irregular, but was integrated into the Red Army proper after Operation Bagration.

Alongside Meliton Kantaria and Alexei Berest, he is credited as being one of the three soldiers who raised the Victory Banner over the Reichstag in the worldwide-famous photograph "Raising a Flag over the Reichstag".

A very humble and quiet man, he retired from the Red Army when the war was over and spent the rest of his life working in a dairy factory, never mentioning his status as a Hero of the Soviet Union to his colleagues, who were quite surprised when several Red Army personnel showed up to pay their respects to their late comrade who had died in an unfortunate accident.

Originally the first to raise the Red Flag over the Reichstag in the darkness of night, however German snipers shot down the flagpole, thus necessitating the flag to be raised again.

He had never been awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union, despite several petitions, allegedly because of his father's past political convictions.

He is nonetheless honoured as a national hero in his native Kazakhstan.

India’s Salal Dam gates are now open, Chenab River water flows towards Pakistan

This reportedly aimed at managing rising water levels triggered by heavy rainfall in the region and also to manage dam pressure.

The development comes just days after the Chenab's water levels had dropped sharply, following the government's decision to restrict the river’s flow, an unprecedented action that led to stretches of the riverbed becoming walkable for the first time in recent memory in some downstream areas.

The regulation of the Chenab’s flow is being widely viewed as a strategic signal of India’s ability to control water releases, especially in the context of mounting tensions with Pakistan.

The decision to restrict the river’s flow followed the Centre’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) with Pakistan, announced in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians, including several tourists.

Under the IWT, India is obligated to notify Pakistan before making any significant interventions in the flow of western rivers like the Chenab.
However, with the treaty now suspended, India has acted unilaterally to manage the river's waters, both in terms of withholding and releasing them as per domestic needs.

Marshall Georgy Zhukov's "Victory Day" Speech, with music, and English translation:

"COMRADES! Men and women compatriots!

The great day of victory over Germany has come. Fascist Germany, forced to her knees by the Red Army and the troops of our Allies, has acknowledged herself defeated and declared unconditional surrender.

On May 7 the preliminary protocol on surrender was signed in the city of Rheims. On May 8 representatives of the German High Command, in the presence of representatives of the Supreme Command of the Allied troops and the Supreme Command of the Soviet Troops, signed in Berlin the final act of surrender, the execution of which began at 24.00 hours on May 8.

Being aware of the wolfish habits of the German ringleaders, who regard treaties and agreements as empty scraps of paper, we have no reason to trust their words. However, this morning, in pursuance of the act of surrender, the German troops began to lay down their arms and surrender to our troops en masse. This is no longer an empty scrap of paper. This is actual surrender of Germany’s armed forces. True, one group of German troops in the area of Czechoslovakia is still evading surrender. But I trust that the Red Army will be able to bring it to its senses.

Now we can state with full justification that the historic day of the final defeat of Germany, the day of the great victory of our people over German imperialism has come.

The great sacrifices we made in the name of the freedom and independence of our Motherland, the incalculable privations and sufferings experienced by our people in the course of the war, the intense work in the rear and at the front, placed on the altar of the Motherland, have not been in vain, and have been crowned by complete victory over the enemy. The age-long struggle of the Slav peoples for their existence and their independence has ended in victory over the German invaders and German tyranny.

Henceforth the great banner of the freedom of the peoples and peace among peoples will fly over Europe.

Three years ago Hitler declared for all to hear that his aims included the dismemberment of the Soviet Union and the wresting from it of the Caucasus, the Ukraine, Byelorussia, the Baltic lands and other areas. He declared bluntly: “We will destroy Russia so that she will never be able to rise again.” This was three years ago. However, Hitler’s crazy ideas were not fated to come true—the progress of the war scattered them to the winds. In actual fact the direct opposite of the Hitlerites’ ravings has taken place. Germany is utterly defeated. The German troops are surrendering. The Soviet Union is celebrating Victory, although it does not intend either to dismember or to destroy Germany.

Comrades! The Great Patriotic War has ended in our complete victory. The period of war in Europe is over. The period of peaceful development has begun.

I congratulate you upon victory, my dear men and women compatriots!

Glory to our heroic Red Army, which upheld the independence of our Motherland and won victory over the enemy!

Glory to our great people, the people victorious!

Eternal glory to the heroes who fell in the struggle against the enemy and gave their lives for the freedom and happiness of our people!"

Berlin police have banned the distribution of the Marxist newspaper junge Welt on May 8—Victory Day—at the Soviet War Memorial and Red Army cemetery in Treptow

The trigger is a front page headlined “Hitler broken,” showing a red flag with a hammer and sickle, says junge Welt.

Nick Brauns, editor-in-chief of junge Welt, called it a clear case of censorship:

“It’s an attack on press freedom. A police decree banning Soviet symbols is now being used to keep junge Welt away from the memorial honoring the Red Army’s victory over Nazi fascism.”

A Kumyk native from Dagestan, Ismailov was wounded five times throughout the war, but the proverbial Caucasian constitution allowed him to return to full health and continue fighting.

His role in raising the flag over the Reichstag went uncredited until Aleksey Kovalyev, a soldier who assisted with staging the picture "Raising a Flag over the Reichstag", recognized him as one of the original soldiers in 1995. Oddly not being awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for undisclosed reasons, Beresti was discharged three years after the war and worked at a cinema before being convicted for corruption. Five years after serving his sentence, he returned to work as a labourer in a factory before dying heroically sacrificing himself to save a child who strayed on a railway while a train was approaching.

He was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine in 2005, even if the Narcofuehrer and his Azovite friends are trying to forget such a "dishonorable" incident.
