Monitoring packets inside an IPsec tunnel in pfSense with tcpdump, you need to capture traffic before it gets encrypted (on LAN or internal interface), or after it's decrypted (also on LAN/internal if inbound). IPsec traffic itself is encrypted, so capturing directly on the WAN will show ESP (Encapsulating Security Payload), not actual payload data.

If you still want to inspect the raw tunnel packets (ESP), run:

tcpdump -i enc0

enc0 is the virtual interface for IPsec

This shows decrypted traffic going through the IPsec tunnel

Interestingly, I am offered the 2.8.1b branch via the front page of the dashboard, says it's available, but I am not using any beta base version, So I am guessing it won't be too long before we are offered straight up ver 2.8.1. Guess I'll wait. Don't suppose with a .point release package deletion/re-installation will be suggested?

I am experiencing slow VPN profile generating in current version. When I I want to generate an OpenVPN client which is certificate base. It takes almost 3 to 5 minutes to be generated. That’s why I need to upgrade the server. Hopefully to get the issue resolved and my servers to be up to date

My experience with the pfSense 2.8 update is that I updated 40 devices such as APU1-2-3-4, Dell R210ii, and Intel Celeron J6412. This was done remotely on a management network over OpenVPN, and I didn't encounter a single issue.

The update was successful even when we lost connection from our datacenter while the device was downloading the update in the remote area. When we re-established the connection, we found pfSense 2.8 installed and working.
