pfSense is an open source firewall/router computer software distribution based on FreeBSD. It is installed on a physical computer or a virtual machine to make a dedicated firewall/router for a network.

2 port = wan,lan
Lan= vlan1 vlan2

If your uplink pull-down is 500-768mb that’s a full saturation for 1g uplinks.
Your cat6/e 1g cables should works fine here.
If you want to do 10g, you need 10g on all interfaces you don’t want 1g bottlenecks going to.
Sfp+ 10g works fine point to point, but transceivers allow you to plug cat6a/7++ cables which are cheaper than the sfp+ cables at length.
With a 1g uplink, you’re in the same boat as me essentially. I’d use as
Much 10g interface between high performance machines for cross transfer like vMotions or something with a NAS
Because I have copper, my uplink is 1g, but I have 10GbE connections between my fw and TNSR and between TNSR and my servers nic cards

I feel like the ont hardware might Auto negotiate some things between the ISP inorder to be used. Has anyone tried anything similar and had good results? Any clue where I can find information?

The 5015A is an older unit, and can saturate about 6gb on that link. Not full 10GbE but is faster than most other units

Right side: sfp+ 10g nic, with sfp+ to 10GbE transceivers (because 10GbE is cheaper cables)
Left side: 1g ports for standard networking in the 505-2
Question to anyone that has fiber optic coming in from there ISP, is it possible to plug directly in to the pfsense (sfp+) instead of the ont usually given by the ISP?

A new wrinkle bulliten: Now I see the offer has disappeared from the dashboard page — and I have the following on the update page: pfSense-repoc: failed to fetch the repo data. Right. But I have done the upgrade to the 2.8.0 branch. And in the update page it says I am up to date
Whereas on the main dashboard on the left side 2.8.1bxxxxxxx is offered. It seems the system is coercing me to take the beta branch. Or I am confused 🤔

Stuff around really fast locally and once you get the fiber uplink it’s just plug and go where your copper line feed is now
I have an i5, 8 GB, a 4-port 1 GB NIC card (want to separate ports for unimportant vlans I didn't want to do at the switch), and UCSC-PCIE-CSC-02 with 2 10 GB SFP+ ports, 1 for backbone to my switch, and the other just open. I have a 1 GB plan with my provider but end up barely seeing it at full speed

When I was using a different model with only 1g ports, I aggregate my 3-1g lines for intranet, but this is way faster for vMotion migrations between servers

Your isp uplink will auto-negotiate your uplink ip address on whatever interface port its plug into . That’s a standard networking thing.
You have to configure pfSense to designate your interfaces for specific purposes, for example, I have a second 505-2
With a quad sfp+ card running netgate TNSR which handles routing after my firewall on my edge
So long as freeBSD has a driver for your card, it works

My input in this unit is Ethernet on the sfp+ nic because I have copper. But, it should just plug in and work the same way.
