💡 Final Release and Discontinued
Here’s a discussion on the change:
The patch that has been merged implements signature spoofing in a safer way compared to the ones proposed in the past (MicroG apks exclusively are allowed to spoof only and solely the Google signature they want to spoof).
Many of the microG services have to spoof themselves as Google Mobile Services in order to replace some of their functionality with a more privacy-respecting, resource-conserving alternative.
To facilitate that, the OS has to allow the microG apps to pretend to be the regular Google GMS/Gplay framework apps without actually having the same signing signature. The feature is referred-to as "application signature spoofing".
LOS was bitterly opposed to including that in their ROM for years because of it "breaking the android security model".
Which is understandable on some level but if it's properly implemented (eg in this case locking down this functionality so it can only be used by known trustworthy code and not malware) then it shouldn't be an issue.
And given how Google has been doubling-down on their sneaky data-collection efforts year after year, and moving all sorts of essential services out of the open-source AOSP code into various proprietary closed-source Google apps and frameworks instead (increasingly forcing full FOSS ROMs to be severely crippled from a core functionality standpoint), I think it's overdue to start mainstreaming some countermeasures against that.
Google with android has been cloaking themselves in the FOSS mantle to gain credibility in some circles from the beginning, but then they turn around and year after year, increasingly cripple actual FOSS android implementations.

Podcini
Open source #podcast manager/player project.
This is based on a fork from the popular project AntennaPod as of Feb 5 2024.
Differing from the forked project, this project is purely Kotlin based, relies on the most recent dependencies, and most importantly has migrated the media player to androidx.media3, and added mechanism of AudioOffloadMode which is supposed to be kind to device battery. Efficiencies are also sought on running the app. App build is also upgraded to target Android 14.

⚡️You-Get: Download video, audio, images from the web easily!
Ever wanted to pull a bunch of content down so you can watch later?
You-Get is a CLI (command line interface) utility that makes it easy to download videos, audio, and images from the web.
https://you-get.org
you-get 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNQXAC9IVRw'
You Get supports an impressive array of sites: Youtube, Twitter, VK, Tumblr, Soundcloud, Instagram, Facebook, and countless others!
It supports downloading YouTube playlists as well, it'll go through each video in the playlist.
Downloads can be very slow though, I recommend you use the —info flag before downloading to see what formats are available. Then you can run the command again with the —i-tag flag at whichever quality level is right for you.
You can download videos off of big tech platforms / paywalls by using the '—cookies' flag and pointing to a Firefox cookies database (cookies.sqlite).

ArchiveBox
Open source self-hosted web archiving. Takes URLs/browser history/bookmarks/Pocket/Pinboard/etc., saves HTML, JS, PDFs, media, and more…
https://archivebox.io
https://github.com/ArchiveBox/ArchiveBox
ArchiveBox is a powerful, self-hosted internet archiving solution to collect, save, and view websites offline.
Without active preservation effort, everything on the internet eventually dissapears or degrades. Archive.org does a great job as a centralized service, but saved URLs have to be public, and they can’t save every type of content.
ArchiveBox is an open source tool that lets organizations & individuals archive both public & private web content while retaining control over their data. It can be used to save copies of bookmarks, preserve evidence for legal cases, backup photos from FB/Insta/Flickr or media from YT/Soundcloud/etc., save research papers, and more…
Once installed, it can be used as a CLI tool, self-hosted Web App, Python library, or one-off command.
It saves snapshots of the URLs you feed it in several redundant formats.
It also detects any content featured inside pages & extracts it out into a folder:
🌐 HTML/Any websites ➡️ original HTML+CSS+JS, singlefile HTML, screenshot PNG, PDF, WARC, title, article text, favicon, headers, …
🎥 Social Media/News ➡️ post content TXT, comments, title, author, images, …
🎬 YouTube/SoundCloud/etc. ➡️ MP3/MP4s, subtitles, metadata, thumbnail, …

⚡️Mirotalk SFU - A High Quality FOSS Jitsi Competitor?
@takebackourtech
I recently came across MiroTalk SFU, a self-hosted video/audio conferencing software. Developed by Miroslav Pejic, Mirotalk SFU uses WebRTC for real-time a/v streaming and an SFU (Selective Forwarding Unit) architecture.
There are 2 version of the app. A P2P version of the app where browsers connect directly to each other, and the more standard SFU version where a media server is responsible for collecting and distributing a real time stream from each participant.
It already has features like:
- Resolution up to 4K, up to 60 fps speeds
- Echo cancellation / noise supression
- Screen sharing
- Built in chat and reactions
- Collaborative whiteboard
- File sharing
- Video / audio sharing
- Livestreaming in the browser
The public server also allows for 'anonymous' calls without any registration or sign in, something which Jitsi had recently removed due to abuse of the public service.
We've always ran a Jitsi server as part of our professionally hosted privacy services Above Suite (https://abovephone.com/suite), and Mirotalk could be a great addition to this.

MicroG Installers:
Just installing the microg components as user apps will partially function but you will not get full functionality without the main components installed as system apps, like the location components.
There are a few 3rd-party installers that handle that and set all the required permissions etc.
These are the ones generally recommended
*Note: currently all installers use the official microg version, so you can update it from its F-Droid repository.

LineageOS adds internal support for microG
https://review.lineageos.org/c/LineageOS/android_frameworks_base/+/383574
https://review.lineageos.org/q/topic:microg-eval
And the application signature spoofing is locked-down to apps signed by microg.org.
As of February 25th 2024, LineageOS has added internal support for application signature spoofing, a critical pre-requisite for full microG functionality. LineageOS ROM images built after that date will include this new feature.
This means that many people will no longer have to root their device and install tools like Xposed/LSposed to make their ROMs compatible with microG. This is a win for both security/stability as well as user friendliness, as there is no longer any need for any settings/permissions in this implementation. The ROM will “just work” with core modules released by the microG project.
Other than application signature spoofing hacks, microG installation tasks remain as before. Please see #microg #installers note for a general overview and links to recommended installation tools.~This is huge news for the microG project, as LineageOS is the largest and most famous custom Android ROM project in the world.
LOS is also used as the foundation for a large percentage of other custom android ROMs as well. Which means that almost every one of those ROMs will also now include microG support by default, without any extra effort on their part.
The impact of this on the custom ROM community cannot be overstated: it is a “watershed moment”.
Many in the FOSS community have gotten increasingly frustrated with Google’s progressive crippling of the base FOSS version of android “AOSP”, and the migration of many important core functions which used to be included with AOSP into proprietary, closed-source Google apps and frameworks instead.
This issue was one of the founding objectives of the microG project: give control back to the user and let them take advantage of the open-source foundation of android without forcing them to use a proprietary and snoopery vendor-locked version of the OS instead, just to get basic functionality like push messaging and Play Store app compatibility.
At this point we believe that the existing “LineageOS for microG” project will continue with their project as it is a “works out of the box” solution that also bundles some FOSS app store tools.
