✅IELTS Writing Task 2: Mastering Body Paragraphs
🔹Want to score Band 7+ in IELTS Writing Task 2? Your body paragraphs are the heart of your essay, where you develop arguments and impress examiners. Here’s a detailed guide on introducing ideas, explaining them, and supporting with examples—perfect for boosting your coherence and task response!
🔹Why Body Paragraphs Matter
Body paragraphs (usually 2-3) form the core of your essay, showing your ability to:
Present clear arguments.
Develop ideas logically.
Use examples to support your points.
🔹A well-structured paragraph can elevate your score in Coherence and Cohesion and Task Achievement.
🔘Step 1: Introducing the Idea (Topic Sentence)
Start with a topic sentence that clearly states the main idea of the paragraph. It should directly address the essay question and set the direction.
🔺Example (Environment Topic):
"One major advantage of renewable energy is its role in reducing carbon emissions."
🔺Tips for a Strong Topic Sentence:
Use signposting phrases: “A key reason,” “Firstly,” or “One benefit.”
Be specific—avoid vague phrases like “It is good.”
Link to the question, e.g., for “Why protect the environment?” focus on a specific benefit.
🔘Step 2: Explaining the Idea
Next, explain why the idea is important or how it works. This shows your ability to develop arguments and adds depth.
🔺Example Explanation:
"Renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, produce minimal greenhouse gases compared to fossil fuels. This reduction helps combat climate change, which threatens ecosystems and global weather patterns."
🔺Tips for Effective Explanations:
Use 2-3 sentences to clarify the idea.
Include linking words: “because,” “thus,” or “as a result.”
Show cause-and-effect or logical connections to strengthen your argument.
🔘Step 3: Supporting with Examples
Add a specific example to make your argument convincing and demonstrate real-world relevance. Examples can be real, hypothetical, or general, but they must be relevant.
🔺Example:
“For instance, Germany has invested heavily in solar energy, with over 50% of its electricity coming from renewables on some days, significantly lowering its carbon footprint.”
🔺Tips for Examples:
Introduce with phrases like “For example,” “To illustrate,” or “Such as.”
Keep it concise—1-2 sentences.
Ensure the example directly supports the topic sentence.
🌟Full Sample Body Paragraph
“One major advantage of renewable energy is its role in reducing carbon emissions. Renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, produce minimal greenhouse gases compared to fossil fuels. This reduction helps combat climate change, which threatens ecosystems and global weather patterns. For instance, Germany has invested heavily in solar energy, with over 50% of its electricity coming from renewables on some days, significantly lowering its carbon footprint.”
❌⛔️Common Mistakes to Avoid
Off-topic Ideas:
❗️Ensure the topic sentence aligns with the question.
❗️Weak Explanations: Don’t just repeat the idea—explain why it matters.
❗️Irrelevant Examples: Examples must support the main point, not distract.
❗️Overloading: Stick to one idea per paragraph for clarity.

“Why should governments invest in public transportation?”
