🇺🇦🇪🇺 Europe pushes back against Trump’s “peace plan” — EU foreign ministers reject any concessions at Ukraine’s expense

European countries are not prepared to support Donald Trump’s new peace proposal if it forces Ukraine into territorial concessions. Reuters reports this, citing today’s meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

Diplomats were clear: Europe will not approve any concessions from Kyiv. If Trump’s plan pressures Ukraine or demands the transfer of territory, the EU will not support it.

🇳🇱 Netherlands drops takeover of Chinese-owned chipmaker Nexperia amid supply tensions

The Dutch government has reversed its decision to seize control of Chinese-owned semiconductor firm Nexperia, defusing a diplomatic standoff with Beijing. Economics Minister Vincent Karremans announced the suspension of an earlier Cold War-era measure that cited national security risks and governance issues.

Nexperia, based in Nijmegen and owned by China’s Wingtech Technology, is a key supplier to global auto industries. The move signals a recalibration of Dutch policy, balancing national security concerns with the strategic need to maintain semiconductor supply chains amid mounting geopolitical pressure.

🇮🇱🤝🇺🇸 In a normal world, this should be an immense scandal in Europe.

Le Monde has a long article describing the hellish life of Nicolas Guillou, a French judge at the ICC in The Hague, due to U.S. sanctions punishing him for authorizing arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant for war crimes in Gaza.

Guillou's daily existence has been transformed into a Kafkaesque nightmare. He cannot: open or maintain accounts with Google, Amazon, Apple, or any US company; make hotel reservations (Expedia canceled his booking in France hours after he made it); conduct online commerce, since he can't know if the packaging is American; use any major credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex are all American); access normal banking services, even with non-American banks, as banks worldwide close sanctioned accounts; conduct virtually any financial transaction.

He describes it as being "economically banned across most of the planet," including in his own country, France, and where he works, the Netherlands.

That's the real shocking aspect of this: the Americans are:
- punishing a European citizen
- for doing his job in Europe
- applying laws Europe officially supports
- at an institution based in Europe
- that Europe helped create and fund

and Europe is not only doing essentially nothing to protect him, they're actively enforcing America's sanctions against their own citizen - European banks closing his accounts, European companies refusing him service, European institutions standing by while Washington destroys a European judge's life on European soil.

Again, in a normal world, European leaders and citizens should be absolutely outraged about this. But we've so normalized the hollowing out of European sovereignty that the sight of a European citizen being economically executed on European soil for upholding European law is treated, at best, as an unfortunate technical complication in transatlantic relations.

🇺🇦🇵🇱 Ukrainian soldier recalls his training experience at a NATO range in Poland:

The Polish side was supposed to train UAV operators, but in reality it could only provide a training ground for that, the major recalls.

“Fortunately, we took 12–15 Mavics with us, and we had one experienced pilot,” he says.

The person who became most interested in the drones was a Czech instructor — a veteran of peacekeeping missions in Afghanistan, Jakub (name changed). Together with him, “Eighteen” decided to run the exercise: Czech paratroopers were to assault the positions of the Ukrainian soldiers. The “Mavics” were supposed to help the defenders.

“After their first assault attempts, Jakub came up to me and said: ‘Hey, can we remove the Mavics?’” the major recalls.
“‘Why would we, Jakub?’ I asked him.”

“‘Well, your Mavics spot us way too quickly, and we can’t get close to you — you detect us as soon as we approach your positions,’ the Czech instructor replied.”

“I told him: ‘Jakub, unfortunately, we are preparing for war.’”

🌊🌎 Climate scientists’ controversial claim Gulf Stream could be near collapse — predicting a new ice age

A key Atlantic current could be pushed to the brink of collapse within decades, supposedly ushering in a new ice age and dramatically raising sea levels, climate scientists have claimed in a controversial new study published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment.

Per the new findings, the at-risk current in question is the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation or AMOC, a “conveyor belt of the ocean” that funnels warm water toward the ocean surface — from the tropics to the Northern Hemisphere.

This current, which includes the Gulf Stream that runs from the Gulf of Mexico to the US East Coast and across the Atlantic to Europe, helps maintain the mild climate of Europe, the UK, and the US East Coast.

The study stated that the source of this marine temperature regulator, the Greenland Ice sheet, is being thawed amid warming temperatures, causing meltwater runoff to leach into the North Atlantic — leading to stagnation.

Should the AMOC slow down too much, they claim, it could have significant ramifications. These include the extreme suggestion that temperatures across Europe to drop by nearly 60 degrees.

🇯🇵 The Japanese yen is falling, it's at around $155 per dollar, the weakest level since mid January

There's a massive interest rate gap between the US and Japan. The Fed is holding rates around 3.75%-4.00% while Japan's rates are basically zero at 0.5%. This creates an insane opportunity for traders. They borrow yen at nearly 0%, convert it to dollars and stick those dollars in US Treasury bonds earning around 3.75%+.That's free money, so everyone piles into the trade. The more they sell yen to buy dollars, the weaker the yen gets

The Bank of Japan could raise rates to make yen borrowing more expensive and defend the currency but they're completely boxed in. Japan's economy just shrank 1.8% annualized last quarter, the first contraction in six quarters. Raising rates now would kill what little growth they have. So traders know the BOJ won't act which means they keep selling the yen with confidence.

Prime Minister Takaichi is about to announce 17-20 trillion yen in fiscal stimulus to prop up the economy. This actually makes the currency collapse worse. The bond market is already freaking out pushing Japanese government bond yields to multiyear highs. Why? Because everyone sees what's coming, massive deficits, more debt and a weaker yen to pay it all back. The real issue with Japan isn't a lack of spending, it's all structural. The population is aging, growth is stalled and deflation expectations are baked in. You can't print your way out of that. Spending more just signals you're desperate which tanks the yen further.

so what happens next? The yen keeps falling which makes imports more expensive pushing inflation higher. Also, wages aren't keeping up, they only grew 1.9% last month. So ordinary Japanese people get poorer. The government then feels pressure to spend even more stimulus to cushion the blow which weakens the yen again. It's a doom loop. If we hit 160 yen per dollar, the government might actually step in with currency intervention but that's just temporary market theater. The fundamentals don't support yen strength until the Fed cuts rates significantly or Japan gets its fiscal house in order and neither is happening soon.

"Supporting Ukraine is a bargain compared to a Russian victory"

🇷🇴 The Legion of Archangel Michael: The last "Knightly Order"

The Legion was an organization with many facets, it struck with the sword against the internal enemies of Romania and stretched the hand for the people in need, resembling the long forgotten knightly orders

The Legion of Archangel Michael was founded in 1927 in Romania by Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, and was the largest political movement of interwar Romania

The Legion was deeply rooted in Orthodox Christianity, from which all its values and principles arose

The Romanian state attempted to ban the Legion in 1933 due to its growing popularity among the population

Before the ban, the state killed 18 Legionaries and arrested thousands more in an act of political persecution

Previously, in 1930, the Iron Guard was founded as the paramilitary arm of the Legion

Its goal was to protect the members of the organization and fight internal enemies who sought to destroy Romania, including political movements like the communist bolsheviks

One of the Legionaries killed by the authorities for his political activism was Virgil Teodorescu, a student who was shot by the police while attaching posters of the Legion on the street

Another case was Constantin Nița, who was shot while attempting to throw a loaf of bread over a fence to feed Legionaries in a house which had been besieged by the police, who attempted to arrest them for their political work

In 1933, the Iron Guard fought back for the first time and killed the Prime Minister of Romania, who had ordered the murder and arrest of thousands of Legionaries for their activism

Along the years, the Iron Guard faced many opponents, including other political groups

In this and more aspects, the Legion remsembled the knightly orders of the middle ages, which had been founded to protect pilgrims in the Holy Land

During the Spanish Civil war, the Legion sent a contingent of fighters to support Spanish nationalists in their fight against communist forces

Another aspect in which the Legion resembled knightly orders was their massive charity network:

The Legion offered help in Romanian communities, built and repaired roads, bridges, churches and schools and entertained meal centers where they handed out food to people in need

The Legion was organized in "nests", which were semi-decentralized groups of Legionaries who would engage in all of this social and charitable work

The nests had up to 13 members and each locality had several nests

🇪🇺🇺🇦 The European Union has reached the “we need foreign troops with questionable loyalty to defend us and our borders” stage of decline!

Lithuanian politician and EU defense commissioner, Andrius Kubilius said:

“It would be good that a battle-tested Ukraine army, after peace has been established in Ukraine, would be ready to be present in all the countries of our frontier region, starting from the Baltic region and in Lithuania, next to German brigade and the rotating U.S. battalions,"

Kubilius, a former Lithuanian prime minister, stressed that any Ukrainian deployment would not undermine Germany sending an armored brigade to Lithuania, the presence of U.S. troops in the region and NATO's Article 5 common defense provision.

"We Lithuanians, we learned in our history that it’s better to have multiple guarantees for your security," he said, adding that NATO's Article 5 should be buttressed by the EU's own security provisions "with a clear mechanism how they will be implemented."

📝: Knowing the EU, if this plan gets implemented, Ukrainian troops would not be on the borders, but in the cities to protect national governments from their citizens.

🧊 New research shows ice is slippery because of electrical charges — not pressure and friction.

For almost 200 years, the prevailing explanation for ice’s slipperiness was that friction or pressure from a skate, boot, or tire melted a microscopic film of water on the surface, creating a lubricating layer. A new study from Saarland University has overturned that long-standing idea.

Instead, the true cause lies in the electric fields generated by molecular dipoles. When any object contacts ice, the partial charges in its own molecules interact with the highly ordered dipole arrangement of water molecules in the ice crystal. This electrostatic tug-of-war loosens the topmost layer of the ice lattice, transforming it into a thin, disordered, quasi-liquid film—without any need for heat or significant pressure.

Remarkably, this self-lubrication mechanism works even at temperatures approaching absolute zero, where thermal energy is virtually absent and conventional pressure-melting or frictional heating theories completely break down. In those extreme conditions, ice remains slippery simply because its surface molecules are electrically vulnerable.

The discovery fundamentally rewrites our understanding of one of nature’s most familiar phenomena. Beyond settling a centuries-old debate, it has immediate practical implications: from designing better winter tires and non-slip surfaces that actually work on ice, to engineering superior skis, ice skates, and even advanced nanomaterials that perform reliably in cryogenic environments.

By revealing the dominant role of intermolecular electric forces, the research opens entirely new avenues for controlling friction and adhesion at the molecular scale—potentially transforming fields from winter sports equipment to aerospace and nanotechnology.

🇺🇸🇨🇳 China’s Purchases of US Soybeans Stall Despite Trade Truce

China’s purchases of American soybeans appear to have stalled, less than two weeks after the US touted a wide-ranging trade truce that signaled thawing relations between the world’s two biggest economies.

After a flurry of orders late last month — which were the first of this season — Chinese imports of US cargoes seem to have faltered, according to traders who asked not to be identified discussing confidential information. They said they were not aware of new shipments. The pause is fueling uncertainty over whether the biggest consumer of American soybeans will import as much as US President Donald Trump’s administration claims to expect.

The agreement with China is seen as crucial for providing relief to struggling American farmers, who have been hard-hit by inflation and high input costs. The Asian country has held off buying US soybeans for much of this season, hurting growers while giving Beijing a key bargaining chip during negotiations with Washington. The US trade with China was worth more than $12 billion last year.
