The Swiss government wants cantons to continue to have the last say in naturalisation procedures. On Wednesday, it reiterated its rejection of the so-called "democracy initiative".

The democracy initiative wants to make naturalisation easier. It demands that naturalisation should be possible after five years of legal residence in Switzerland [instead of 10 years], regardless of the settlement permit held by the person.

🇮🇱📱🇺🇸 YouTube Quietly Erased More Than 700 Videos Documenting Israeli Human Rights Violations

A documentary featuring mothers surviving Israel’s genocide in Gaza. A video investigation uncovering Israel’s role in the killing of a Palestinian American journalist. Another video revealing Israel’s destruction of Palestinian homes in the occupied West Bank.

YouTube surreptitiously deleted all these videos in early October by wiping the accounts that posted them from its website, along with their channels’ archives. The accounts belonged to three prominent Palestinian human rights groups: Al-Haq, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights.

The move came in response to a U.S. government campaign to stifle accountability for alleged Israeli war crimes against Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

The Palestinian groups’ YouTube channels hosted hours of footage documenting and highlighting alleged Israeli government violations of international law in both Gaza and the West Bank, including the killing of Palestinian civilians.

YouTube, which is owned by Google, confirmed to The Intercept that it deleted the groups’ accounts as a direct result of State Department sanctions against the group after a review. The Trump administration leveled the sanctions against the organizations in September over their work with the International Criminal Court in cases charging Israeli officials of war crimes.

The deleted videos range in scope from investigations, such as an analysis of the Israeli killing of American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, to testimonies of Palestinians tortured by Israeli forces and documentaries like “The Beach,” about children playing on a beach who were killed by an Israeli strike.

Some videos are still available through copies saved on the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine or on alternate platforms, such as Facebook and Vimeo. The wiping only affected the group’s official channels; videos which were produced by the nonprofits but hosted on alternate YouTube channels remain active. No cumulative index of videos deleted by YouTube is available, however, and many appear to not be available elsewhere online.

JNIM have begun an active blockade of the city, while their attacks on fuel supplies have become popular, the group have also struck convoys of almost all goods and supplies going heading to the capital.

Several countries have advised their citizens to leave the country immediately, including the United States.

🇪🇺 European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Marta Kos, says the EU will take measures to prevent "Russian Trojan horses" from entering the EU. What does this mean for the countries which seek EU membership? CIG | #commentary

Kos' proposal means that Brussels wants to create a two-tier system, with the current 27 members enjoying all the benefits and rights which the EU's founding treaties grant, while the new members are "put on probation" for a couple of years until they become full members.

The period of probation means being under intense scrutiny from Brussels which reserves the right to exclude the new members from the union at the first sign of "democratic backsliding" with Marta Kos explicitly mentioning that the EU does not wish to have another Viktor Orbán to deal with. New members would not be able to veto any decisions taken by the Commission or Council which may harm the national interests.

The candidate countries closest to EU membership, Ukraine and Moldova, will respond differently to this proposal. Ukrainian president, Vladimir Zelensky, has already said he will not agree to being treated as a 2nd class country, Moldova though is considering accepting this proposal.

Moldovan president, Maia Sandu, called on the EU to open negotiations immediately at the beginning of October after her party, PAS, won the Parliamentary elections, however all the EU has done since was delay this opening which undermines Sandu's plan of getting Moldova into the EU by 2028, before her term expires.

The European Commission treats the accession of Ukraine and Moldova as a package, meaning the two countries are tied to one another and with Hungary opposing Ukraine's EU membership, Moldova is also stuck which is beginning to cause frustration for Moldovan politicians.

Kos told FT she thinks that Moldova should be separated from Ukraine and go around Orbán's veto but Ukraine's biggest advocates in the EU, the Baltic countries, who control a lot of powerful positions in Brussels, are opposed to this eventuality because it would push Ukraine's membership in the distant future, after the war is over.

Germany, The Netherlands and France have an interest to keep Ukraine out of the EU or at the very least, only partially integrate it. Ukraine has cheap labour, far fewer regulations and corruption is the norm which makes it profitable for German, Dutch and French businesses to open up manufacturing facilities and then export the goods to the EU.

So this is what the EU is doing, it is delaying EU membership for Ukraine and Moldova and then releases these meaningless reports and grades every couple of months for positive headlines, while actual negotiations are stuck due to internal disputes between EU institutions and its member states who have various national interests at play to speed up or slow down the integration of new countries into the union.

"Amid enduring anxiety over the potential for the Ukraine war to escalate into a third world war, Russia last week offered to cement its disinterest in invading Europe by entering into a formal non-aggression pact with European Union and NATO states. However, Germany quickly signaled its disinterest in such a treaty -- at least for now. 

In making the case for pouring weapons and money into Ukraine and urging it to prolong the war at any cost, Western hawks routinely claim that Russian President Vladimir Putin is bent on reconstituting the Soviet Union and eventually conquering Europe. Speaking at the Third Minsk International Conference in Belarus last Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov not only rejected those accusations, but said his country was willing to enter into a non-aggression pact: 

"We have repeatedly said that we had, and have, no intention to attack any current NATO or EU member. We are ready to enshrine this position in future security guarantees for this part of Eurasia." 

Lavrov also expressed exasperation with Western governments, saying meaningful dialogue with them is futile for now, given their refusal to entertain "genuine collective security guarantees" that address the security interests of all parties -- including Russia: 

"The heads of state and government of the European Union avoid considering these future guarantees, which are based on a completely collective foundation, and proudly declare that, after the Ukraine crisis, security guarantees should exist not with Russia's participation, but against Russia. This is an example of their mindset."

Following up on Russia's offer at a press conference held by German Foreign Office spokeswoman Kathrin Deschauer, journalist Florian Warweg of NachDenkSeiten asked about the German state's assessment of the non-aggression-pact overtures. Rather than crediting Russia's peaceful overture, Deschauer sidestepped the question, saying its Germany's position that "the Russian side must end its war. In the meantime, "the German government will continue to support Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression."

Russia's offer and Germany's deflection come several weeks after Lavrov used an address to the United Nations General Assembly to refute the notion that Russia is seeking to attack European Union or NATO states. "Threats of force against Russia, accused of practically planning an attack on the North Atlantic Alliance [NATO] and the European Union, are becoming increasingly common," Lavrov said. "President Putin has repeatedly debunked such provocations."

🇬🇧 The UK "accidentally" released yet another migrant sex offender from prison!

The error at HMP Wandsworth in south London happened on 29 October - just five days after the high-profile release of migrant sex offender Hadush Kebatu from HMP Chelmsford in Essex.

The prisoner is a 24-year-old Algerian man who remains unnamed.

It is unclear why the UK prison service and police do not want the public to know the name of the inmate they "accidentally" released, inmate who may reoffend, and help the British authorities put him back behind bars.

🇮🇱🤝🇮🇹 A Journalist Asked Why Israel Isn’t Paying to Rebuild Gaza. It Cost Him His Job.

An Italian journalist who asked a European Commission official why Israel shouldn’t pay for the reconstruction of Gaza was let go by his news agency.

Gabriele Nunziati, a Brussels-based reporter who covered the EU for Rome’s Nova news agency, told The Intercept he received a notice that he would lose his job barely a month after he became a correspondent.

The move, which was first reported by the Italian news website Fanpage, came after he asked Paula Pinho, the European Commission’s chief spokesperson, about Gaza’s reconstruction on October 13.

“You’ve been repeating several times that Russia should pay for the reconstruction of Ukraine,” Nunziati, who is a contractor with Nova, said at a press conference. “Do you believe that Israel should pay for the reconstruction of Gaza since they have destroyed almost all its civilian infrastructure?”

Pinho replied that it was “definitely an interesting question, on which I would not have any comment.”

🇲🇱🇧🇫🇳🇪 - The unprecedented collapse of the security situation in the Sahelian nations - Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.

Al-Qaeda affiliate JNIM is on the brink of establishing an empire, the group controls more territory in the Sahel than the Malian and Burkina militaries combined.

Following the catastrophic failures of the Malian and Burkinabe militaries, backed by the Russian Africa Corps (formerly Wagner Group), Bamako and Ouagadougou are now on the verge of an incredible collapse to JNIM.

Mali has yet to regain border access to Algeria, all operations failed horribly, leaving scores of dead Russian operatives. Bamako is now on the brink of losing its Mauritania border too. The most startling situation is Mali and Burkina Faso have just ONE remaining access point to Niger – via Kantchari, Burkina Faso, to Niamey, Niger.

Meanwhile, the situation in neighboring Niger deteriorates rapidly too. JNIM have expanded into the north and southwest of Niger, with Islamic State affiliate Lakurawa increasing control in the south of the country, operating out of northern Nigeria. For the first time the Tuareg separatists, Azawad Liberation Front, AFL, have begun active operations in Niger. Meanwhile in the southeast of Niger, Boko Haram's second largest zone of operation has become Niger, overtaking Chad.

Rerum Novarum's maps show the current situation in the Sahel compared to July of 2024, just 16 months ago.

🇺🇸✡️ The co-chairs of the Heritage Foundation’s Anti-Semitism Task Force emailed an ultimatum to Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts.

In the email, the Task Force demanded that Roberts delete the video statement he issued last week defending Tucker Carlson’s decision to give a friendly interview to Nick Fuentes, apologize to Christian and Jewish Israel supporters who were offended by the statement, and hire a visiting fellow to address antisemitism among young right-wingers, among other demands.

“If we are not able to come to an agreement soon, the relationship between the Heritage Foundation and the Task Force will be irrevocably harmed,” reads the letter to Roberts from task force co-chairs Luke Moon, Victoria Coates, Ellie Cohanim, and Mario Bramnick.
